Aneurysms are clinical entities that can develop and affect human aorta; and although in most cases they have an asymptomatic course, these pathological dilatations can lead to a lethal outcome when rupture occurs, thus the establishment of predictors is crucial for death prevention. Essential events that take place in the vessel wall have been identified and described, such as inflammation, proteolysis, smooth muscle cell apoptosis, angiogenesis, and vascular remodeling. Porcine and ovine models have been useful for the development and evaluation of endovascular devices of the aorta...

INTRODUCTION: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is a chronic pyelonephritis characterized by an inflammatory granulomatous reaction that destroys the renal parenchyma. It is an uncommon entity. Diffuse inflammation has the potential to spread to nearby organs, especially the skin. OBSERVATION: A 73-year-old patient presented with a three-year history of painful and fistulized nodules on the abdominal wall. The results of abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis with extension to the skin, colon, and psoas muscle...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the evolution and short-term outcomes of a new endoluminal technique for the management of complete rectal prolapse. DESIGN: This was a prospective study. SETTINGS: This study was conducted at a single tertiary care teaching center. PATIENTS: A total of 29 patients were included...

PURPOSE: No reports have described techniques to efficiently anesthetize the lateral cutaneous branches of the entire abdomen. The aim of this study was to investigate an effective procedure for blocking the lateral cutaneous branches in the abdominal region. We sought to describe the sensory distribution of the previously described thoracoabdominal nerve block through perichondrial approach (TAPA) and the novel costal and lateral external oblique muscle plane (EXOP) blocks in healthy volunteers...

Abdominal wall endometriosis is a rare disease that usually develops in association with a cesarean section scar. Although frequently identified in the skin and subcutaneous adipose tissue adjacent to the cesarean scar, intramuscular localization is possible but rare. Treatment is based on surgical excision of the lesion associated with or without hormone therapy. Wide surgical excision is the treatment of choice, but it exposes to the risk of abdominal wall hernia. We here report two cases of parietal endometriosis occurring after Pfannstiel scar for cesarean section whose data were collected at the Department of surgery in the Zaghouan Regional Hospital...

Dermatofibrosarcoma is a rare cancer, accounting for 0.01% of all cancers. We here report the case of a 44-year-old female patient presenting with the 5th recurrence of locally advanced Darier-Ferrand dermatofibrosarcoma, that progressed on many cycles of neoadjuvant therapy and required emergency radiotherapy with good response. This allowed to perform wide excision of the tumor with healthy limits. The patient had remission after 1 year of follow-up. Prognosis for patients with Darier-Ferrand dermatofibrosarcoma is generally excellent...

Giant desmoid tumor has been rarely reported in the literature but it is a therapeutic challenge. We here report a case of tumor manifesting as painful abdominal mass causing a major esthetic problem. Radiological assessment allowed to determine its depth extension and limits of resection. Desmoid tumor of the abdominal wall was evoked and surgically resected, with simple outcome. This study highlights challenges in the management of this entity, due to its large size.

Dermatofibrosarcoma is a rare skin tumor. Morphological characteristics can be misleading and unknown to most of physicians. Diagnostic delay may affect patient´s management and prognosis. We here report the case of a young patient with lesions protruding from the abdominal wall mistaken for benign cysts. X-ray examination revealed subcutaneous adipose tissue mass. This was suspected of being a fibrosarcoma. The mass was resected with a macroscopic safety margin. The anatomo-pathological study confirmed the diagnosis of dermatofibrosarcoma...

Dermatofibrosarcoma is the most common cutaneous sarcoma. Its surgical management is a technical challenge due to the high amount of substance loss. We explain a new technique of abdominal wall reconstruction by a reverse abdominoplasty with umbilical transposition. This new surgical technique allowed, in one time, the excision and the abdominal wall reconstruction. Functional and esthetic results are really satisfactory.

Previous studies are limited by multiple mesh locations or types. In this study, we evaluate specifically subfascial polypropylene mesh placement to determine a more definitive complication rate and basis for objective comparison. An adequate integration of the prosthetic materials used to repair abdominal wall defects is necessary for satisfactory outcomes. We aimed to evaluate, in an animal model, the biological behavior of meshes used for abdominal wall surgery. Four groups of 10 rats were separated. After laparotomy, intraperitoneal prostheses were placed: 1) Prolene® (polypropylene microporous, heavy-weight), 2) Ultrapro® (polypropylene + poliglecaprone, macroporous low-weight), 3) Proceed® (polypropylene + polidoxanone + regenerated oxidized cellulose, microporous medium-weight), 4) Physiomesh® (polypropylene + poliglecaprone, macroporous lowweight)...

BACKGROUND: The use of synthetic mesh in potentially contaminated and contaminated incisional hernias may lead to a higher morbidity and mortality. Biological meshes may provide a solution, but since these meshes are rarely used, little is known about long-term results. The aim of this cohort study was to evaluate the long-term clinical efficacy and patient satisfaction following Permacol™ in complex abdominal wall hernia repair (CAWHR) patients in a cross-sectional fashion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients were operated for CAWHR with Permacol™ in the Netherlands between 2009 and 2012...

Although optical colonoscopy is still the gold standard for diseases of the colon, radiologic examination of the colon is now being performed by CT scan. Evaluation of the colon is enhanced by distension, which "de-folds" the intestinal wall, thus facilitating its examination for abnormalities of the mucosa, the wall as a whole, and the diameter of the bowel lumen. Water or gas (CO(2)) may be used for the distension, depending on the suspected lesions. The water enema method of colonography combines filling the bowel lumen with water and intravenous injection of a contrast medium...

Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair is currently the subject of intense debate, even though it provides a series of advantages over open surgery and is feasible and safe. Various studies have shown this technique to be as effective as open repair with a lower recurrence rate. Despite the excellent results of laparoscopic repair of ventral hernias, there are numerous controversies associated with this procedure. These controversies concern the indications and contraindications of the procedure, and technical aspects such as how to create the pneumoperitoneum, perform adhesiolysis, manage the hernia sac, and insert and fix the mesh to the anterior abdominal wall...

Morphometry was conducted of the linea alba, the broad abdominal muscles, and the rectus abdominis muscles on 5 levels in relaxation and tension of the prelum abdominale muscles. The ultrasound investigation has been performed by means of the echodevices "Aloka-280" and "Aloka-650" (Japan), transducers of 3.5 and 5 MHz. Eighty-two persons of both sex at the age 16-72 years have been examined. The white line, m. rectus abdominis and m. vastus abdominis have been measured at three levels, as well as lateral amuscular spaces. The width of the abdominal white line is individually very variable; the area of the lateral amuscular spaces is greater to the right than to the left. In 20 persons examined they are absent...
