A series of sol-gel derived silicon based coatings were developed to improve the osseointegration of commercial titanium dental implants. The osseointegration starts with a positive interaction between the implant surface and surrounding tissues, which is facilitated by the adsorption of plasma proteins onto the biomaterial surface immediately after implantation. It is likely that the enhancement of protein adsorption to titanium implants leads to a better implant/tissue integration. In addition, silica based biomaterials have been shown to promote osteoblast differentiation...

PURPOSE: Soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities account for half of all soft tissue sarcomas. Radiotherapy and surgery have been the standard modalities in the treatment of this type of cancer. Brachytherapy can be used as the sole therapy, if the target volume is localized and easily accessible. This work reports three cases of shoulder soft tissue sarcomas with positive deep resected margins, treated with a combination of external beam radiotherapy and surface mould brachytherapy boost technique...

A healthy 72-year-old man presented with retention problems concerning the dentures in his maxilla. On account of extreme resorption, placement of implants without prior bone augmentation was not an option. The proposal was to use autologous bone harvested from the iliac crest. After a healing period of 4 months, a cone beam computed tomography scan was made, following which the virtual implant planning of 6 implants was carried out. With the help of a template supported by osteosynthesis screws, which had already been inserted during the augmentation procedure, the plan was applied to the patient...

AIM: There is evidence that patients experience more discomfort/pain after peri-implant probing than periodontal probing. However, there are several plausible factors to additionally influence this observation: e.g. implant type, age, smoking. Thus, this study was designed to compare discomfort/pain after periodontal and peri-implant probing in different implant types. METHODS: 2 dentists recruited and examined 80 patients, each of them exhibiting a dental implant with a contralateral natural tooth...

Dental implants have become a suitable treatment option for patients experiencing tooth loss and a popular choice among clinicians for immediate tooth replacement. Because of modifications in implant designs and development in immediate restoration and loading protocols, dental implant treatment can be reduced to a single procedure instead of multiple processes, hence providing the patient with a streamlined treatment that is typically much less invasive with immediate-tooth replacement. The purpose of this paper is to review the immediate restoration of dental implant(s) procedure and validate its position in treatment protocols by presenting success rates documented for more than 15 years and with 5000 implants...

Immediate loading has proven to be a predictable modality for restorations with titanium dental implants. An increasing number of articles indicate that zirconia implants might osseointegrate to a similar extent in this context. This 5-year case report describes an outpatient maxillary restoration with eight immediately loaded zirconia implants. Implantation followed extensive bone augmentation. At the 5-year follow-up, all implants were still well osseointegrated clinically and radiologically. No major bone loss or peri-implantitis had occurred in spite of temporary insufficient patient compliance...

Part 1 of this series introduced the partial extraction therapies as a group of techniques for ridge preservation at immediate implant placement and beneath pontic sites. The concept proposes a paradigm shift away from extract and augment toward partly retaining the tooth root to preserve the ridge and prevent buccopalatal collapse. The revolutionary socket-shield technique was introduced in 2010; however, there has been no follow-up literature to guide the clinician in terms of procedural steps. While root submergence is well established, the socket-shield and pontic shield are still in their clinical infancy and require long-term clinical data before they can be proposed as routine in everyday implant dentistry...
