PURPOSE: We examined selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) as a replacement therapy for medically controlled open-angle glaucoma (OAG) or ocular hypertensive patients. METHODS: A prospective randomized interventional clinical trial on 143 glaucoma patients. Patients were randomized to either receiving SLT or to the control group that continued on pressure lowering medication. Data were recorded 1 hr, 1 week, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months after SLT. Primary outcome was number of medications at 12 and 18 months while maintaining a predetermined target intraocular pressure (IOP)...

Stenosing laryngotracheitis (SLT) affecting the children is considered to be an emergency pediatric condition associated with ENT pathology. Its treatment presents a serious challenge for otolaryngologists, pediatricians, specialists in communicable diseases, allergologists, etc. We have undertaken a retrospective analysis of the available data with a view to summarizing the tendencies in the evolution of SLT morbidity. The results of the 35 year-long experience with the use of the currently available therapeutic strategies for the treatment of the children suffering from stenosing laryngotracheitis are presented...

BACKGROUND: People with aphasia are at risk of becoming depressed and isolated. Online surveys have found that the majority of speech and language therapists (SLTs) lack confidence in addressing the psychological needs of people with aphasia. AIMS: To explore how SLTs conceptualize the scope of their role; barriers and facilitators to SLTs addressing psychosocial needs; and SLTs' experiences of specialist training and support, and working with mental health professionals (MHPs)...

BACKGROUND: Academic programmes in speech-language pathology are increasingly providing telehealth/telepractice clinical education to students. Despite this growth, there is little information describing effective ways to teach it. AIMS: The current exploratory study analyzed the perceptions of speech-language pathology/therapy (SLP/SLT) faculty, student and SLP/SLT clinicians to ascertain effective pedagogical approaches for telepractice service delivery, rank the relative importance of telepractice skills and knowledge competencies, and define any pedagogical challenges to teaching them...

BACKGROUND: Social impacts on tobacco use have been reported but not well quantified. This study investigated how strongly the use of smoked and smokeless tobacco may be influenced by other users who are close to the respondents. METHODS: The International Tobacco Control Project (TCP), India, used stratified multistage cluster sampling to survey individuals aged ≥15 years in four areas of India about their tobacco use and that of their close associates. The present study used logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) for tobacco use for each type of close associate...

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a foodborne pathogen. This bacterial strain can generate Shiga-like toxins (SLTs), which can cause serious sickness and even death. Thus, it is important to develop effective and sensitive methods that can be used to rapidly identify the presence of SLTs from complex samples. Pigeon egg white (PEW) contains abundant glycoproteins, including pigeon ovalbumin (POA) (∼60%). POA possesses Gal-α(1→4)-Gal-β(1→4)-GlcNAc termini, which can recognize the B subunits in SLT type 1 (SLT-1B)...

AIM: Patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) whose intraocular pressure is not adequately controlled by one medication have several treatment options in the US. This analysis evaluated direct costs of unilateral eye treatment with two trabecular micro-bypass stents (two iStents) compared to selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) or medications only. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based, annual state-transition, probabilistic, cost-of-care model was used to assess OAG-related costs over 5 years...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tracheostomized patients are medically complex and vulnerable. International attention is now focused on improving the safety and quality of their care. This review summarizes recent evidence in hot-topic areas pertinent to speech and language therapy (SLT) intervention for dysphagia management in tracheostomized patients. RECENT FINDINGS: The management of tracheostomized patients requires a truly multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach. Without this, patients remain tracheostomized and hospitalized for longer and have slower access to MDT members...

Though smokeless tobacco (SLT) use has decreased in many communities, concern for American Indian (AI) SLT use remains, as this population continues to be disproportionally affected by SLT-related diseases. Tobacco has cultural significance to many AI tribes, therefore tobacco cessation messages portraying tobacco as entirely negative may be ineffective. As a part of our formative research for an SLT cessation intervention, we sought to gain a better understanding of the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about SLT among AI community members...

Few studies in the United States have examined longitudinally the mortality risks associated with use of smokeless tobacco (SLT). The sample of our study was composed of participants from the National Longitudinal Mortality Study who completed a single Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey between the years 1985 and 2011. Using survival methods, SLT use at the baseline survey was examined as a predictor of all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortalities in models that excluded individuals who had ever smoked cigarettes, cigars or used pipes (final n = 349,282)...

CORVET and HOPS are protein complexes mediating the maturation of early endosomes (EEs) into late endosomes (LEs)/vacuoles. These hetero-hexamers share four 'core' components, Vps11, Vps16, Vps18 and Vps33, and differ in two specific subunits, CORVET Vps8 and Vps3 and HOPS Vps39 and Vps41. Whereas ablating HOPS-specific components has minor growth effects, ablating any CORVET constituent severely debilitates Aspergillus nidulans growth, buttressing previous work indicating that maturation of EEs into LEs is physiologically crucial...

The current study proposes a new bi-factor rotation method, Schmid-Leiman with iterative target rotation (SLi), based on the iteration of partially specified target matrices and an initial target constructed from a Schmid-Leiman (SL) orthogonalization. SLi was expected to ameliorate some of the limitations of the previously presented SL bi-factor rotations, SL and SL with target rotation (SLt), when the factor structure either includes cross-loadings, near-zero loadings, or both. A Monte Carlo simulation was carried out to test the performance of SLi, SL, SLt, and the two analytic bi-factor rotations, bi-quartimin and bi-geomin...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the review is to examine the current state of the art of dysphagia intervention delivery description and to propose use of a new tool to facilitate this: the behaviour change technique taxonomy version 1 (BCTTv1). RECENT FINDINGS: Describing intervention delivery is difficult, and published research in the field of speech and language therapy (SLT) does not include detail on this key aspect of research protocols. Interventions themselves are often poorly delineated, and a way is needed of classifying how these interventions are delivered in practice...
