Background/objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate force levels exerted by levelling arch wires with labial and lingual conventional and self-ligating brackets. Materials/methods: The tested orthodontic brackets were of the 0.022-in slot size for labial and 0.018-in for lingual brackets and were as follows: 1. Labial brackets: (i) conventional bracket (GAC-Twin, Dentsply), (ii) passive self-ligating (SL) brackets (Damon-Q®, ORMCO; Ortho classic H4™, Orthoclassic; FLI®SL, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics) and (iii) active SL brackets (GAC In-Ovation®C, DENTSPLY and SPEED™, Strite)...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the review is to examine the current state of the art of dysphagia intervention delivery description and to propose use of a new tool to facilitate this: the behaviour change technique taxonomy version 1 (BCTTv1). RECENT FINDINGS: Describing intervention delivery is difficult, and published research in the field of speech and language therapy (SLT) does not include detail on this key aspect of research protocols. Interventions themselves are often poorly delineated, and a way is needed of classifying how these interventions are delivered in practice...

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common liver malignancy. Salvage liver transplantation (SLT) is viewed as a feasible cure for recurrence of HCC after resectomy, but the effect is under dispute. A retrospective study examined data at Renji Hospital for 239 transplants from January 2006 to December 2015, including 211 who received primary liver transplantation (PLT) and 28 who underwent SLT. A multivariable cox regression model was employed to pick out relative factors to overall survival (OS) and recurrence free survival (RFS)...

BACKGROUND: Loco-regional therapy with curative intent (CLRT) followed by salvage liver transplant (SLT) in case of HCC recurrence is an alternative to primary liver transplant (LT) in selected patients with HCC. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing the survival of patients treated with CLRT versus LT, stratified by the stage of liver disease, extent of cancer, and whether SLT was offered or not. RESULTS: We included 48 studies involving 9835 patients (5736 patients with CLRT and 4119 patients with primary LT)...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tracheostomized patients are medically complex and vulnerable. International attention is now focused on improving the safety and quality of their care. This review summarizes recent evidence in hot-topic areas pertinent to speech and language therapy (SLT) intervention for dysphagia management in tracheostomized patients. RECENT FINDINGS: The management of tracheostomized patients requires a truly multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach. Without this, patients remain tracheostomized and hospitalized for longer and have slower access to MDT members...

Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the changes in aqueous humor dynamics (AHD) produced by selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and to explore if baseline AHD parameters are predictive of IOP response to SLT. Methods: Thirty-one consecutive subjects diagnosed with ocular hypertension or primary open-angle glaucoma scheduled to undergo SLT as their primary IOP-lowering therapy were enrolled in this prospective observational study. Subjects underwent baseline assessment of AHD in both eyes...

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) has been widely used in the clinical management of glaucoma, both as primary and adjunctive treatment. As new evidence continues to arise, we review the current literature in terms of indications and efficacy, surgical technique, postoperative care, repeatability, and complications of this therapy. SLT has been shown to be effective in various glaucomas, including primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), steroid-induced glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXFG), and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), as well as other glaucoma subtypes...

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) has been indicated as a safe and efficient treatment for primary open-angle glaucoma; however, recent studies have also shown positive results with the use of SLT in some clinical conditions related to primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). Despite the potential benefits of SLT in selected cases of PACG, the mechanisms underlying the modifications in the trabecular meshwork tissue of patients with PACG are poorly understood. This narrative review approached both the current, limited knowledge about the histological changes observed in different forms of PACG and the clinical results of SLT treatment for PACG...

Lytic transglycosylases (Lts) are involved in recycling, cell division, and metabolism of the peptidoglycan. They have been understudied for their usefulness as potential antibacterial targets due to their high redundancy in Gram-negative bacteria. Bulgecin A is an O-sulphonated glycopeptide that targets primarily soluble lytic tranglycosylases (Slt). It has been shown that bulgecin A increases the efficacy of β-lactams that target penicillin bindings proteins (PBPs). Here, we present the high-resolution crystal structure of LtgA from Neisseria meningitidis strain MC58, a membrane bound homolog of Escherichia coli Slt, in complex with bulgecin A...

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is the international leading cause of irreversible blindness. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only currently known modifiable risk factor; it can be reduced by medications, incisional surgery, or laser trabeculoplasty (LTP). LTP reduces IOP by 25% to 30% from baseline, but early acute IOP elevation after LTP is a common adverse effect. Most of these IOP elevations are transient, but temporarily elevated IOP may cause further optic nerve damage, worsening of glaucoma requiring additional therapy, and permanent vision loss...

Following single-lung transplantation (SLT), there is significant redistribution of flow preferentially to the transplanted lung. Altered lung perfusion leads to unusual results when performing pulmonary scintigraphy, which could result in interpretation errors. We present pulmonary scintigraphy images from a 67-year-old female patient with history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that were obtained before SLT, 10 days after SLT, and 3 months after SLT.

In common with other stereotactic procedures, stereotactic laser thermocoagulation (SLT) promises gentle destruction of pathological tissue, which might become especially relevant for epilepsy surgery in the future. Compared to standard resection, no large craniotomy is necessary, cortical damage during access to deep-seated lesions can be avoided and interventions close to eloquent brain areas become possible. We describe the history and rationale of laser neurosurgery as well as the two available SLT systems (Visualase® and NeuroBlate®; CE marks pending)...

Low-temperature solid oxide cells (LT-SOCs), operating at 400 to 650 °C, have great potential for commercialization since they can provide lower cost and improved long-term durability. Low operating temperature can also enable high round-trip efficiency of SOCs as reversible energy storage devices. This paper describes Sr0.8La0.2TiO3-α (SLT) anode supported LT-SOC with thin La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte made by tape casting, with screen printed La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Co0.2O3-δ (LSCF) cathode and impregnated Ni anode...

This study examined validity of direct and indirect measures of perceived harm of e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (SLT) compared to cigarettes. On direct measures, people compare one product to another, whereas on indirect measures, people rate each product separately and the researcher compares these ratings. Data from youth in Wave 1 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (2013-2014) were analyzed (N=13,651 youth aged 12-17years). The study included direct measures of perceived harm of e-cigarettes and SLT compared to cigarettes, and indirect measures were created by comparing ratings of the products...

PURPOSE: Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is known to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) effectively. The aim of this study, however, was to evaluate the effect of SLT on ocular haemodynamics. METHODS: A total of 69 eyes of 69 patients (age 67.8 ± 9.9 years) with already treated primary open-angle glaucoma who were assigned for SLT for further IOP reduction were consecutively enrolled in this prospective interventional case series. Intraocular pressure, the ocular pulse amplitude (OPA), ocular pulse volume (OPV) and pulsatile ocular blood flow (pOBF) were assessed with the Ocular Blood Flow Analyzer prior to and 3 months after SLT...

BACKGROUND: The health hazards associated with the use of smokeless tobacco (SLT) are similar to those of smoking. However, unlike smoking, limited initiatives have been taken to control the use of SLT, despite its widespread use in South and Southeast Asian countries including Bangladesh. It is therefore important to examine the prevalence of SLT use and its social determinants for designing appropriate strategies and programmes to control its use. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use of SLT in terms of prevalence, pattern and sociodemographic differentials in a rural area of Bangladesh...
