BACKGROUND: Cytological analysis of ascitic fluid is an important tool for diagnosis, staging, and prognostic assessment in patients with cancer, but more detailed information is needed regarding malignancy rates and the time sequence in which ascites develops for different sites of cancer origin. Especially, an increased early tumor diagnosis may improve the acceptance for cytological examinations for the tumor patients in oncological practice. METHODS: Ascites specimens from patients who were treated at Bayreuth Hospital from 2006 to 2015 were reevaluated retrospectively and correlated with clinical reports...

Percutaneous cholecystostomy represents a minimally invasive procedure for providing gallbladder decompression, often in critically ill patient populations. Indications for this procedure include calculous and acalculous cholecystitis, gallbladder perforation, malignant obstruction, percutaneous biliary stone removal, biliary duct drainage, and diagnostic imaging of the gallbladder and biliary ductal system. In addition, gallbladder access provided by percutaneous cholecystostomy may serve to carry additional procedures, such as cholangiograms, gallstone dissolution, and lithotripsy...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze and describe cases of ovarian cancer in pregnant women treated at our center and to review the literature concerned, and to discuss the rationale for therapy. METHODS: Twenty-Three patients of ovarian malignancies during pregnancy were treated at Vali- Asr Hospital between 1991 and 2002. Data on treatment and follow-up were evaluated. RESULTS: The incidence of ovarian carcinoma associated with pregnancy in our series was 0...

Cytogenetic evaluation of bone marrow and neoplastic tissues plays a critical role in determining patient management and prognosis. Here, we highlight two cases in which the cytogenetic studies challenge the common practice of using hematologic and morphologic changes as key factors in malignant disease management. The first case is that of a lymph node sample from a 40-yr-old non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patient sent for determination of disease progress. Hematologic studies showed no evidence of transformation to high-grade NHL (>15% blasts with rare mitotic figures)...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We evaluate the clinical significance of portal venous expandable metallic stent (EMS) placement for patients who have malignant portal hypertension caused by recurrent periampullary cancer. METHODOLOGY: Four post-pancreatoduodenectomy patients underwent percutaneous transhepatic portal venous EMS placement because of symptoms of malignant portal hypertension: intractable ascites (2/4), growth of abnormal collateral vein (3/4), melena (2/4), gastroesophageal varix (3/4) and thrombocytopenia (2/4)...

Prospective evaluation was performed in 60 in-patients, carriers of ascites of different etiologies, analyzing the validity of the parameters depending on protein and albumin dosage, both in the ascitic serum and fluid, for the discrimination of possible etiological causes of ascites, including in these parameters Protein Concentration in the Ascitic Fluid, the Serum-Ascites Albumin Gradient, the Protein Ascites/Serum Ratio, and the Albumin Concentration in the ascitic fluid. Average age was 46.9 +/- 19.6, all female; 21 cases were associated with Chronic Hepatic Disease, 14 to Tuberculosis, 11 to Malignant Neoplasia, 7 to Nephrotic syndrome, 4 to Congestive Heart Failure, 2 to Collagen Disease, and 1 to a severe Malnutrition case...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to detect telomerase activity in peritoneal ascites and to assess whether it can be used as an assistant tool for the early detection of ovarian cancer. METHODS: Telomerase activity was measured by TRAP assay in 47 patients with ovarian malignancies and 50 patients with benign uterine leiomyomas (control group). RESULTS: All 26 peritoneal washing cytology positive cases were telomerase positive. Of the 21 peritoneal washing cytology negative cases, 3 were telomerase positive...

BACKGROUND: Cholinesterase is an enzyme mainly synthesized in the liver that might play a role in the differential diagnosis of ascites. We prospectively compared the sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic usefulness of the ascites cholinesterase and the classical parameters, ascites total protein concentration and serum-ascites albumin gradient in the differential diagnosis of ascites. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between those parameters and the degree of liver failure...

Clinico-morphological data on 714 cases of epithelial ovarian malignancy were evaluated. 558 patients (78.2%) revealed metastases at various sites in the course of primary treatment. Frequency of dissemination was significantly higher in patients over 40 years, postmenopausal ones and those with a shorter history of disease (duration of symptoms). A significantly higher frequency of metastatic spread was also observed in cases of bilateral involvement of the ovaries, invasion through the tumor capsule and into adjacent tissues and organs, adhesions, ascitis, hydrothorax, cystic-solid, solid and papillary growth patterns (vs relatively lower frequency for cystic tumors)...
