Compact high-frequency arrays are of interest for clinical and preclinical applications in which a small-footprint or endoscopic device is needed to reach the target anatomy. However, the fabrication of compact arrays entails the connection of several dozens of small elements to the imaging system through a combination of flexible printed circuit boards at the array end and micro-coaxial cabling to the imaging system. The methods currently used, such as wire bonding, conductive adhesives, or a dry connection to a flexible circuit, considerably increase the array footprint...

The type and nature of refractive surgery procedures has greatly increased over the past few decades, allowing for almost all patient populations to be treated to extremely high satisfaction. Conventional photorefractive keratectomy involves the removal of the corneal epithelium through mechanical debridement or dilute alcohol instillation. An improvement to this method utilises laser epithelial removal in a single-step process termed transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (transPRK). We explore the history of transPRK from its early adoption as a two-step process, identify different transPRK platforms from major manufacturers, and describe the role of transPRK in the refractive surgery armamentarium...

We report high-level calculations of the excited states of [2,2]-paracyclophane (PCP), which was recently investigated experimentally by ultrafast pump-probe experiments on oriented single crystals [Haggag et al., ChemPhotoChem 6 e202200181 (2022)]. PCP, in which the orientation of the two benzene rings and their range of motion are constrained, serves as a model for studying benzene excimer formation. The character of the excimer state and the state responsible for the brightest transition are similar to those of the benzene dimer...

A series of 3-aroylbenzocoumarin-based luminogens have been synthesized for investigating their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and solid-state fluorescence. The single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of one of them showed that the molecules are arranged in the form of π-dimers which may lead to excimer emission. The large Stokes shifts and the broad-band emission of these 3-aroylbenzocoumarins in solid/aggregation state demonstrated the probable formation of excimers. The shapes of benzocoumarin units have a great effect on the AIE behaviors...

To meet the requirements of fast response and simple process of deep ultraviolet (UV) pulsed laser detector, table salt (TS) was used as laser detection material in combination with a variable resistor to achieve single-pulse laser detection. Under the irradiation of a KrF excimer laser, the laser-induced voltage (LIV) of TS was influenced by the dynamic process of laser-induced plasma, and the whole process was well fitted with the sum of the three exponential functions. As the applied bias voltage (Vb ) and incident laser energy (Ein ) increased, the LIV amplitude (Vp ) increased and the response time decreased...

A series of pyrene-based fluorescent (FL) probes for Sb(III) were designed and synthesized. All of them exhibited luminescence by pyrene excimers in the mixture of DMSO and water and showed enhanced emission with the addition of Sb(III). By comparing their FL response to Sb(III), the effects of intramolecular hydrogen bond, inductive effect, and steric effect were investigated. Meanwhile, the FL enhancement factor of the best performing probe reached 10.28 and the detection limit was calculated to be 0.0535 mg/L, indicating that it might be used as a potential candidate for the treatment of Sb(III) in printing and dyeing wastewater...

Photoresponsive MOFs with precise and adjustable reticular structures are attractive for light conversion applications. Uncovering the photoinduced carrier dynamics lays the essential foundation for the further development and optimization of the MOF material. With the application of time-resolved spectroscopy, photophysical processes including excimer formation, energy transfer/migration, and charge transfer/separation have been widely investigated. However, the identification of distinct photophysical processes in real experimental MOF spectra still remains difficult due to the spectral and dynamic complexity of MOFs...

The use of an exogenous pulmonary surfactant (EPS) to deliver other relevant drugs to the lungs is a promising strategy for combined therapy. We evaluated the interaction of polymyxin B (PxB) with a clinically used EPS, the poractant alfa Curosurf (PSUR). The effect of PxB on the protein-free model system (MS) composed of four phospholipids (diC16:0PC/16:0-18:1PC/16:0-18:2PC/16:0-18:1PG) was examined in parallel to distinguish the specificity of the composition of PSUR. We used several experimental techniques (differential scanning calorimetry, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, small-angle neutron scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy, and electrophoretic light scattering) to characterize the binding of PxB to both EPS...

Recently, considerable attention has been drawn to the field of micro/nanofluidic channels. However, current methods for fabricating micro/nanochannels are complex, costly, and time-intensive. In the present work, we successfully fabricated transparent submicron-channels on fused silica substrates (SiO2 ) using a straightforward laser process. To achieve this, a single-pulse excimer laser irradiation in a rear side configuration was employed to treat a thin film of UV-absorbing silicon suboxide (SiOx ) through the transparent SiO2 substrate...

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is relatively rare and recognition of PPP is different in different countries. Therefore, real-world data are limited. Local phototherapy for the palms and the soles is commonly used to treat PPP due to tolerable safety. However, data on the effectiveness of 308-nm excimer light are limited. In our study, we retrospectively investigated the effectiveness of treatments for PPP, especially phototherapy (308-nm excimer light), in our department. In addition, we examined whether smoking status and focal infection affected responsiveness to treatment of PPP...

Most mechanochromic luminescent compounds are crystalline and highly hydrophobic; however, mechanochromic luminescent molecular assemblies comprising amphiphilic molecules have rarely been explored. This study investigated mechanochromic luminescent supramolecular fibers composed of dumbbell-shaped 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene-based amphiphiles without any tetraethylene glycol (TEG) substituents or with two TEG substituents. The average rate constant (⟨ k ⟩) for pyrene excimer formation (PEF) between an excited and a ground-state pyrenyl label covalently attached to a pyrene-labeled macromolecule (PyLM) has been found to be an ideal parameter to probe macromolecular conformations due to its proportionality to the local concentration ([ Py ]loc ) of pyrenyl labels in PyLM. To date, ⟨ k ⟩ has only been determined with the model-free analysis (MFA) involving the global analysis of the pyrene monomer and excimer fluorescence decays of PyLM...

So far, symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) has been observed with a limited number of chromophores and is usually inhibited by the formation of an excimer. , We show here that thanks to of fine-tuning of the interchromophore coupling via structural control, SB-CS can be operative with pyrene, despite its high propensity to form an excimer. This is realized with a bichromophoric system consisting of two pyrenes attached to a crown ether macrocycle, which can bind cations of different sizes. By combining stationary and time-resolved spectroscopy together with molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that the excited-state dynamics can be totally changed depending on the binding cation...
