OBJECTIVE: Regular exercise is recommended for prevention and treamtent of hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM). The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of change in exercise dose on newly devloping hypertension and DM in middle-aged Korean men. DESIGN AND METHOD: The study population consisted of individuals who participated in a comprehensive health screening program at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, Seoul, Korea from 2002 to 2014 (N = 233,676) Among them, excluded history of diabetes, hypertnsion, cardiovascular disease and cancer, finally 174, 314 subjects were enrolled in this analysis (mean fu: 5...

Almost one out of four patients referred for non cardiac surgery presents preoperatively with hypertensio arterialis (HA). The risk of perioperative cardiovascular complication increases with the grade of HA and the coexistence of end organ damage. This paper is a review of the current knowledge of HA and anaesthesia. It is recommended that patients with grade I and II HA proceed for surgery. But the evidence for patients with grade III HA is less clear. Patients without end organ damage can proceed for surgery, while patients with end organ damage should be stabilized before surgery...

BACKGROUND: Gene expression profiling of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) is a powerful tool for the identification of surrogate markers involved in disease processes. The hypothesis tested in this study was that chronic exposure of PBMCs to a hypertensive environment in remodeled pulmonary vessels would be reflected by specific transcriptional changes in these cells. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The transcript profiles of PBMCs from 30 idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension patients (IPAH), 19 patients with systemic sclerosis without pulmonary hypertension (SSc), 42 scleroderma-associated pulmonary arterial hypertensio patients (SSc-PAH), and 8 patients with SSc complicated by interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension (SSc-PH-ILD) were compared to the gene expression profiles of PBMCs from 41 healthy individuals...

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was determined in clinic-based 1,517 hypertensive patients. All traits were present in 1.1% men and 12.8% women. Combination of different three traits were present as follows: hypertension with high triglyceride and low HDL (men 29.4% vs. women 51.8%), hypertensio with high blood glucose and low HDL (men 13.5% vs. women 29.8%), hypertension with high glucose and high triglyceride (men 18.1% vs. women 18.1%), hypertension with high blood glucose and large waist (men 2.7% vs...

Endocrine dysfunction is a rare but known cause of benign intracranial hypertensio (BIH) in adults. Here we describe a rare case of BIH in the pediatric age group associated with autoimmune hyperthyroidism. A 12-year-old girl presented with a 3-month history of headaches. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilateral papilledema. The ocular findings were otherwise normal, with no exophthalmos. Cranial and orbital magnetic resonance imaging was unremarkable. Lumbar CSF opening pressure in recumbent and relaxed position was elevated (31 cm water)...

A retrospective study was made of persons with ocular hypertension and normal initial visual fields. Seventy eyes were followed, and glaucomatous visual field defects developed in 25 of these eyes. In eyes with ocular hypertensio, the area enclosed by the central visual field isopter (I2e) was significantly smaller than that previously reported for an age-corrected group of eyes with normal intraocular pressure. In the absence of glaucomatous visual field defects, isopter areas were not releated to cup-disc ratios...
