BACKGROUND: Chronic high fat diet (HFD) consumption induces not only low-grade systemic inflammation and obese-insulin resistance, but also initiates neuroinflammation via activating myeloid differentiation factor 2 (MD-2)/toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) complex, resulting in brain pathologies and cognitive impairment. Recently, MD-2 inhibitor (L6H21) has been shown to alleviate systemic inflammation. However, the effect of L6H21 on the cognitive function and brain pathologies of HFD-induced obese insulin-resistant condition has not been investigated...

Despite the unique nature of ethical issues in a longterm care setting, there is limited help in decision making for nursing home personnel. 2015 the Hospizverband of Upper Austria established a clinical ethic committee to help providing a good quality of decision making in nursing home. A consultation could be asked by the managing nurses of the longterm care institution, by the resident or by relatives of the nursing home residents. Since the start of the ethic committee 24 from 137 nursing homes in Upper Austria asked for a consultation...

BACKGROUND: Globally, elderly population with impaired cognitive function, such as dementia, has been accelerating, and Myanmar is no exception. However, cognitive function among elderly in Myanmar has rarely been assessed. This study aimed to identify the rate of cognitive impairment and its risk factors among the elderly in Myanmar. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at rural health centers in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, Myanmar, from December 2018 to January 2019...

BACKGROUND: We have described the clinical stages of the brain aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) continuum. In terms of the pre-dementia stages of AD, we introduced the terminology "mild cognitive impairment" (MCI) for the first pre-dementia stage and "subjective cognitive decline" (SCD) for the pre-MCI stage. We now report the characteristics of a pre-SCD condition eventuating in likely AD. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterize a pre-SCD condition eventuating in AD...

Reduced cognitive function among the elderly is an important issue not only in developed countries, but also in developing countries. As a test to measure cognitive function, the Revised Hasegawa's Dementia Scale (HDS-R) has been used in Asian countries including Japan, Korea, and China. Since there was no HDS-R version in Myanmar language, a questionnaire and manual for the HDS-R were developed. The translation from English to Myanmar language was done by two Myanmar researchers. Back-translation was conducted to confirm the accuracy of the translation by two other Myanmar researchers...

BACKGROUND: Managing acute admission of frail older patients is a challenge in hospitals. Length of inpatient stay, inpatient mortality and the 90-day readmission rate are significant in this group of patients. The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), a multidisciplinary diagnostic and treatment process, is the best approach for identifying medical conditions, mental health, functional capacity and social circumstances in acute geriatric care. METHODS: A review of the records of older patients aged 75 and over, acutely admitted to a district general hospital in England from 15 March 2012 to 16 April 2012 was conducted...

Cerebrovascular small vessel disease is now believed to be the major source of vascular burden of the brain. Cerebrovascular small vessel disease and Alzheimer's disease appear to represent pathophysiologic and clinical continua, rather than dichotomous entities. It appears that common etiopathologic mechanisms underlie the clinical presentation of both of these conditions. Therefore, the staging procedures that have been developed for the clinical continuum of age-associated memory impairment, mild cognitive impairment, and the progressive dementia of Alzheimer's disease appear to be applicable for the same continua in cerebrovascular small vessel disease...

The present study was made not only to clarify endogenous factors (physical and psychological factor of the subjects) and exogenous factors (caregiver residential environment, social assistance) in the urinary incontinence of elderly persons at home undergoing public visiting nursing, both by sexes and by age-groups [65-74 years (young old), 75-84 years (middle old), more than 85 years (old old)], but also to examine nursing care problems at home. The subjects were 252 elderly persons > 65 years (46.8% of all subjects), who were detected for urinary incontinence by incontinence screening examination from among 538 subjects (224 males, 314 females), who underwent visiting nursing by Public Health Centers, and the health and welfare department of intra-metropolitan S Ward from April 1992 to August 1994...
