Interactions between human haematopoietic and bone marrow stromal cells are governed by complex carbohydrate-mediated adhesion processes. In order to evaluate corresponding carbohydrate-binding sites on human myelo- and erythropoietic cells which were able to react with mono- or oligosaccharides, we established an immunocytochemical double-staining assay. We tested whether the exposure of human monocytic cells to streptococcal erythrogenic toxins A, B, C and a streptococcal-derived Mitogert BX is associated with synthesis of neopterin in vitro. Neopterin production was not induced when the human myelomono-cytoma cell line THP-1 was stimulated with these toxins, and there was only a slight co-stimulatory effect of streptococcal erythrogenic toxin A together with interferon-gamma stimulation. However, these toxins induced interferon-gamma and further neopterin production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of three healthy individuals...

Anti-immunoglobulin antibody binding to the surface membrane of blast cells from patients with acute myelomono- and monoblastic leukemia has been examined. Surface receptors for IgG Fc-fragment have been demonstrated to be not responsible for anti-immunoglobulin antibody binding and blast cells not capable of intracellular synthesis of immunoglobulins. It has been shown that antigen-antibody complexes appear in the medium after a short-term cultivation of blast cells and that immunoglobulins appear in the eluates after treating the blast cells with an acid buffer...

The blast cell population of 60 patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia in blast crisis (CML-BC) were analyzed with a panel of monoclonal antibodies to determine the cell surface antigen phenotypes. In addition, cytochemical stains periodic acid Schiff (PAS), myeloperoxidase (MP), Sudan black B (SBB) and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) were also utilized for subtyping. Nineteen cases (31.6%) expressed lymphoid phenotypes characteristic of common ALL cells and one case with extramedullary lymph node crisis expressed T-cell surface phenotypes...
