High-dose chemotherapy supported by autologous stem cell transplantation (HDT/ASCT) has contributed to modify the natural history of follicular lymphoma (FL). However, an overall survival (OS) benefit has only been demonstrated at relapse after a rituximab free chemotherapy regimen. A total of 655 FL patients were reported to the Spanish GELTAMO registry and received their first ASCT between 1989 and 2007. 203 patients received ASCT in first complete response (CR1), 174 in CR2, 28 in third CR3, 140 in first partial response (PR1), 81 in subsequent PR, and 29 with resistant/refractory disease; 184 patients received rituximab prior to ASCT...

INTRODUCTION: The Red Nacional de Donación y Trasplantes of the Colombian Instituto Nacional de Salud reported that in 2014, 1,059 organ transplants were performed, of which 761 were kidney transplants, and 643 (84.5%) of these were from cadaveric organ donors. OBJECTIVE: To describe the socio-demographic characteristics of patients who received renal transplants, as well as their outcomes in terms of survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: National kidney transplants were analyzed through an observational retrospective cohort study...

The 2015 meeting of the Intestinal Transplant Association was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This was the 14th International Small Bowel Transplant Symposium, and it was the first meeting organized as a joint venture of the Transplantation Society, the Intestinal Transplant Association, and the Argentinean Transplant Society (Sociedad Argentina de Trasplantes). Innovative aspects of the classic meeting format included workshops sessions, debates, and multicenter studies. This report highlights the most prominent scientific contributions and results of the first such symposium in a Latin American country...

There is a dearth of data from Ecuador on the burden of life-threatening fungal disease entities; therefore, we estimated the burden of serious fungal infections in Ecuador based on the populations at risk and available epidemiological databases and publications. A full literature search was done to identify all epidemiology papers reporting fungal infection rates. WHO, ONU-AIDS, Index Mundi, Global Asthma Report, Globocan, and national data [Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC), Ministerio de Salud Pública (MSP), Sociedad de Lucha Contra el Cáncer (SOLCA), Instituto Nacional de Donación y Trasplante de Órganos, Tejidos y Células (INDOT)] were reviewed...

The study included 1848 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL)patients treated with chemotherapy/rituximab. The aims were to validate the National Comprehensive Cancer Network International Prognostic Index (NCCN-IPI) and explore the effect of adding high Beta-2 microglobulin (β2M), primary extranodal presentation and intense treatment to the NCCN-IPI variables in order to develop an improved index. Comparing survival curves, NCCN-IPI discriminated better than IPI, separating four risk groups with 5-year overall survival rates of 93%, 83%, 67% and 49%, but failing to identify a true high-risk population...

Hepatitis C (HC) is a very relevant negative prognosis factor for graft and transplant recipient survival. New direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) allow us to solve this problem in an effective way. It is crucial to understand their real impact in our daily practice. We analyzed treatment results with DAA, free of interferon, in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) from 15 Spanish hospitals (Grupo Español de Actualización en Trasplante), regarding effectiveness, tolerance, and impact on immunosuppression, renal function-proteinuria, and diabetes...

INTRODUCTION: Cytomegalovirus infections have gained high importance for individuals that have received organ transplants given the clinical implications this may have in immunocompromised patients.  OBJECTIVE: To describe the seroprevalence of cytomegalovirus in organ donors and recipients of kidney transplants nationwide from the six regions established by the Red Nacional de Donación y Trasplante.  MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive retrospective study that included 1,813 organ donors and 3,313 recipients of kidney transplants, and we calculated IgM and IgG seroprevalence for cytomegalovirus...

OBJECTIVE: to investigate the evidence available in the literature on non-adherence to immunosuppressive therapy among patients undergoing liver transplantation. METHOD: integrative literature review, including research whose sample consisted of patients aged over 18 years undergoing liver transplantation. It excluded those containing patients undergoing multiple organ transplants. For the selection of articles, Medline / Pubmed, CINAHL, LILACS, Scopus and Embase were searched...

OBJECTIVES: to analyze the occurrence and predisposing factors for surgical site infection in patients submitted to heart transplantation, evaluating the relationship between cases of infections and the variables related to the patient and the surgical procedure. METHOD: retrospective cohort study, with review of the medical records of patients older than 18 years submitted to heart transplantation. The correlation between variables was evaluated by using Fisher's exact test and Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test...

OBJECTIVE: Left ventriuclar mass (LVM) is a strong predictor of cardiovascular events. In patients with chronic kidney disease and in patients on dialysis left ventricular hypertrophy is highly prevalent. Overcoming uremia by renal transplantation might improve LVM. However, after transplantation treatment with steroids and calcineurin inhibitors increases blood pressure and therefore might counteract the positive effect of restoring renal function. We performed a metaanalysis of the available evidence from observational studies in patientts after renal tranplantation...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Poor mobilization of peripheral blood stem cells (CD34(+) cells) from bone marrow is a frequent reason for not reaching the autologous stem cell trasplantation (SCT) procedure in patients diagnosed with lymphoma or myeloma. Plerixafor, a reversible inhibitor of the binding of stromal cell-derived factor 1 to its cognate receptor CXCR4, has demonstrated a higher capacity for the mobilization of peripheral blood stem cells in combination with granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) compared with G-CSF alone...

OBJECTIVE: Islet allotransplantation is a less invasive alternative to surgical pancreas transplantation for Type 1 diabetes, while percutaneous intraportal islet autotransplantation (PIPIAT) is usually performed after pancreatic surgery to prevent diabetes. Our aim was to assess the feasibility, radiological aspects, complications and clinical outcome of PIPIAT following pancreatic surgery for not only chronic pancreatitis but also benign and malignant nodules. METHODS: From 2008 to 2012, 41 patients were enrolled for PIPIAT 12-48 h after pancreatic surgery (extended pancreatic surgery for chronic pancreatitis and benign/malignant neoplasms)...

Complement system activation plays an important role in several renal pathologies, including antibody-mediated glomerulonephritis, ischaemia-reperfusion injury of trasplanted kidneys or renal allograft rejection. Besides these conditions, alternative pathway abnormalities are directly involved in the pathogenesis of C3 glomerulopathies and atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome. These abnormalities may be inherited or acquired, the latter as autoantibodies directed against the various components and regulators of the alternative complement pathway...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Rituximab-cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP) every 14 days seems to achieve better outcomes than R-CHOP every 21 days in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients. Currently, the standard regimen is R-CHOP every 21 days. METHODS: This is a phase II clinical trial of treatment with 6 cycles of R-CHOP-14 with pegfilgrastim support in 2 populations of previously untreated DLBCL patients aged ≥65 years (n = 73) or <65 years (n = 51) with low-risk International Prognostic Index scores (0-2)...
