Dermal fillers have been in use for many years for aesthetic rejuvenation of the face. More recently, however, fillers have been increasingly used as an alternative to traditional surgical procedures for non-aesthetic indications. These indications include lagophthalmos, eyelid malpositions and orbital volume deficiency. The advantages of these filler injections are multiple: minimally invasive, repeatable, titratable and even reversible (depending on the product used). We review the current literature of functional uses of filler injections as mentioned above and evaluate the safety profile and efficacy of filler injections for this purpose...

Soft-tissue augmentation and implants are increasingly seen by the radiologist as more techniques emerge for a variety of indications and locations. Some surgical and implant procedures are performed for purely cosmetic reasons in otherwise healthy patients seeking to improve their body image, and some are performed for reconstruction after cancer or other chronic illnesses. Abdominoplasty, liposuction, and autologous fat grafting can be performed for abdominal and gluteal contouring. Injection of liquid injectable silicone has historically been fraught with legal issues, although it continues to be used for augmentation in a variety of anatomic locations...

INTRODUCTION: Hyaluronic acid gel has been used for rejuvenation of the periorbital tissues since 2004. The in-office, nonsurgical procedural nature has resulted in the growing popularity of the use of fillers. The periorbital region poses unique challenges to the cosmetic surgeon. Malar edema, blue-gray dyschromia, and contour irregularities are well reported short-term complications. We present a long-term follow-up review of complications associated with periocular injection of hyaluronic acid gel fillers...

From 1997 to 2006, polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAAG) was approved for use in China as a permanent filler for breast augmentation, and it is estimated that 200,000 women have undergone PAAG injection since then. After injection, complications such as pain, mass, hematoma, asymmetry, migration, infection, and even cancer continue to emerge. Because of the potential toxicity and unstable nature of the material and the nonstandardized injection layers, complications after PAAG injection breast augmentation are often complex and difficult to treat...

The use of injectable bulking agents is a feasible alternative procedure for conventional surgical therapy. In this study, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microspheres coated with polydopamine (PDA) were developed as a potential injection agent to prevent migration in vocal fold. Uniform PDMS microspheres are fabricated using a simple fluidic device and then coated with PDA. Cell attachment test reveals that the PDA-coated PDMS (PDA-PDMS) substrate favors cell adhesion and attachment. The injected PDA-PDMS microspheres persist without migration on reconstructed axial CT images, whereas, pristine PDMS locally migrates over a period of 12 weeks...

We present a rare case of calcaneal chondroblastoma with subsequent surgical revision after graft rejection in a 13-year-old boy. Complications were encountered after the injectable bone graft filler was placed in the calcaneus after curettage. With noted subsequent sinus tract formation, revision surgery was performed that involved dissection of the sinus tract, removal of bone void filler, and application of demineralized bone matrix sponge human allograft soaked in vancomycin-impregnated saline. Sixteen weeks after the revision surgical intervention, the patient resumed normal athletic activities without pain or restrictions...

The loss of superior midface contour and projection can be corrected with the use of injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers, however, the most frequently used injection pattern employs a technique which was originally designed for malar implant surgery. Here we describe a novel injection pattern for restoring facial contours with a HA dermal filler inspired by traditional make-up artistry, which includes greater superolateral positioning of injection sites. Importantly, this technique helps injectors avoid creating an excess of volume in the anterior portion of the malar complex...

A new type of needle system combines 2 parts, an inner needle and an outer needle. The inner needle is used for filler injection and the outer needle acts as a guiding needle that can observe blood reflow when inserting into the vessel lumen during injection process. This new needle system can be used for all kinds of filler, providing real time monitoring for physician and preventing intravascular injection of any filler.

Acne scarring is a common and persistent sequela affecting many individuals worldwide, with significant physical and long-lasting psychological effects. Currently, the treatment options available for acne scars are mostly invasive and have several side effects. This paper explores the possibility of using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) collagen microspheres, a relatively underexplored technique hitherto, to treat common atrophic scars. PMMA-collagen is more popularly used in injectable wrinkle fillers. Preliminary research has shown that PMMA-collagen has a beneficial effect on atrophic scars while having the added advantage of being safe, tolerable and minimally invasive as well...
