OBJECTIVE: To measure the red cell distribution width (RDW) ranges at birth and to evaluate potential association with typical neonatal diseases: patent of the ductus arteriousus (PDA), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and late-onset sepsis (LOS) mortality. METHODS: Forty-six full-term, 41 preterm, and 35 intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR) infants participated in this retrospective, observational study. RDW was measured before 3 days of life (T0) in all infants, and at first month of life (T1) in preterm/IURG patients...

In order to investigate the effect of placental size on fetal intrauterine growth retardation (IURG), we examined the morphology and alterations in the expression of glucose transporter in the placentas of rats exposed to 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP). 6-MP was administered orally at 0 and 60 mg/kg/day on gestation day (GD) 9, 11, 13 or 15, and the placentas were sampled on GDs 17 and 21. The main findings in the treated groups were small placenta caused by mitotic inhibition and apoptosis, fetal resorption and IUGR with or without some malformations...

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is the reason of high prematurity rate and its later complications. Restriction of utero-placental circulation, which could be changed by IURG treatment, plays the main role in FGR. The results of changes in apoptosis-related genes expression due to FGR treatment may help further in the prevention and treatment of FGR. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Caspase-3, Bax and Bcl-2 expressions in normal pregnancies and those complicated by treated and untreated FGR have been compared...

It is obvious that smoking is harmful. It is especially dramatic that it may cause a lot of dysfunctions among newborns who without their free will are expose to toxic tobacco components. The consequences are as serious when mother smoke as when she is exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Exposure to cigarette smoke during pregnancy is directly correlated to premature rupture of the membranes, premature birth, intrauterine growth retardatyion--IURG, low birth weight, smaller body length of newborn, reduced lung function--hypoxia, delayed development of respiratory and nervous system, sudden infant death syndrome--SIDS, obesity, allergy, arterial hypertension or even tumors...

Antiphospholipid antibodies have been reported to be associated with many common clinical settings. Many gynaecologists and obstetricians have suggested their role in the pathogenesis of infertility, recurrent spontaneous abortions (RSA), ectopic pregnancy, intrauterine growth retardation (IURG), intrauterine foetus decay, pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH), preterm rupture of the membranes (PROM) and preterm labour and premature detachment of the placenta and oligohydramnios and abnormalities of the foetus...

The pathophysiological significance of fetal echogenic gut (FEG) is unknown. Our aim was prospectively to evaluate FEG in infants with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and absent umbilical artery end diastolic flow velocities. Over a 15 month period, nine infants with FEG met these criteria. Nine infants who, on antenatal assessment, had demonstrated IURG and absent umbilical artery end diastolic flow velocities, but no evidence of FEG, were selected as case-controls. Gastrointestinal function was then prospectively evaluated in both groups after delivery...

An experience with repeated examinations of 656 patients operated upon for bile calculi is presented. It was shown that the estimation of long-term results of surgical treatment of choledocholithiasis should be performed on the basis of common criteria three years after operation by complex use of clinical, laboratory, X-ray and endoscopic methods of examination. Debatable questions associated with the interpretation of special examinations and their influence on the clinical estimation of long-term results are elucidated...

This study was designed to evaluate the role of Doppler velocimetry of uterine artery and of the association of uterine and umbilical artery. We use the index of Stuart S/D to characterize the uterine waveform. A value greater than or equal to 3 and/or the persistence of a notch is considered abnormal. When the uterine artery is pathological, we find more proteinuric hypertension, the incidence of intrauterine growth retardation (IURG) twice (p less than 0.001), the birthweight is significantly lower; the caesarean section rate for fetal distress is 35% for 11% in the other group (p less than 0...

Brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAER) were recorded in 89 neonates born between 32 and 40 weeks, in order to analyze the consequences of intrauterine growth retardation on brainstem conduction time. The I-V interval was measured in 28 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants (control group), in 24 small for gestational age (SGA) infants with maternal hypertensive disease (MHD) and in 37 SGA infants without MHD. At any gestational age, SGA infants with MHD always presented an acceleration of their brainstem conduction time as compared to the other SGA infants...
