PURPOSE: Pressurized metered dose inhalers are commonly used in patients with asthma. However, the need to coordinate inhalation with inhaler actuation means that they are not suitable for use per se. Valved holding chamber devices were developed to overcome some of the problems of pressurized metered dose inhalers. Several types of holding chambers of different sizes are available in Iran. This study was designed to compare the effects of 2 commonly used valved holding chambers (Asthm Yar and Dam Yar) in Iran on bioavailability of salbutamol spray and also spirometric parameters in asthmatic patients...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe the latest developments in the field of occupational asthma and occupational rhinitis in 2001 and 2002. RECENT FINDINGS: Several surveillance programs of occupational diseases, such as Observatoire National des Asthmes Professionnels in France, Surveillance of work-related and Occupational Respiratory Diseases in South Africa (SORDSA), Surveillance of Work-related and Occupational Respiratory Diseases (SWORD) in UK, have reported on the frequency of occupational asthma...

AIMS: To estimate the general and specific incidence of occupational asthma in France in 1996-99; and to describe the distribution of cases by age, sex, suspected causal agents, and occupation. METHODS: New cases of occupational asthma were collected by a national surveillance programme, based on voluntary reporting, named Observatoire National des Asthmes Professionnels (ONAP), involving a network of occupational and chest physicians. For each case, the reporting form included information on age, sex, location of workplace, occupation, suspected causal agent, and methods of diagnosis...

Observatoire National des Asthmes Professionnels (ONAP) was created in 1996 by two French professional societies to estimate the incidence of occupational asthma and to promote preventive measures against it. Occupational and chest physicians were asked to report newly diagnosed cases of work-related asthma and reactive airway dysfunction syndrome (RADS), the information collected included age, sex, occupation, suspected causal agents and diagnostic methods. In 1997, 82.3% of 559 cases reported (64% males, mean age 36 +/- 13 yrs) involved occupational asthma, 4...

Pirbuterol (10mg and 15mg capsules) was found to be an effective bronchodilator on large and small airways in bronchial asthm. Benefit occurred within one hour and it lasted five or more hours. It had no significant effect on ECG, blood pressure or heart rate. Mild nervousness and/or muscle tremor occurred occasionally. Hydroxyzine usually prevented these side effects.
