OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy of combined application of deproteinised calf serum injection (DCSI) and acupuncture in treating cerebral ischemia (CI) in rats. METHODS: Ninety Wistar rats were randomly divided into control, CI model, Acupunct (acupuncture), DCSI, Acupunct + DCSI groups, with 18 cases in each group. CI model was duplicated by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). DCSI (80 mg/kg) was given via the rat's tail vein, once daily for 7 days. Acupuncture was applied to "Baihui" (GV 20), "Shuigou" (GV 26), "Neiguan" (PC 6), "Hegu" (LI 4), "Taichong" (LR 3) and "Zusanli" (ST 36), once daily for 7 days...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the changes of the expression of NT-4 in spared dorsal root ganglia (DRG,L6) on both the operation/Acup side and the nonoperation/non-Acup side as well as in the spinal lamina II (L3, L5, L6) and Clarke' nucleus (L3) of the normal adult cats, partial dorsal rhizotomy cats, and Acup spared DRG cats so as to disclose the relation between NT-4 and the plasticity of spinal cord as well as the Acup promoting spinal cord plasticity. METHODS: Twenty-five adult cats were divided into 5 groups; normal control group; unilateral partial root rhizotomy 7 d and 14 d groups (unilateral L1-L5, L7-S2 DRG were transected, but L6 DRG was spared); Acup spared DRG 7 d and 14 d groups (electro-needle stimulation was performed following unilateral partial root rhizotomy)...

Localization and distribution of the gap junctions in the human epidermis have been studied. They are mainly concentrated in the area of biologically active (acupunctive) points and in so called meridians connecting these points. A supposition is made that the gap junction system performs certain integration of the information from the skin surface and its aneural transmission to remote areas. Discovery of a regulated gap junction system in relatively low organized animals (previously described by the authors), as well as revealing of such a system in mammals, makes it possible to suppose that the system is phylogenetically the most ancient one performing a directed transmission of an information simultaneously with and besides the neural system...
