PURPOSE: Urolithiasis is a common urological disorder responsible for serious human affliction and cost to the society with a high recurrence rate. The aim of the present study was to systematically evaluate the phlorotannin rich extract of Sargassum wightii using suitable in vitro and in vivo models to provide scientific evidence for its antilithiatic activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To explore the effect of Sargassum wightii on calcium oxalate crystallization, in vitro assays like crystal nucleation, aggregation and crystal growth were performed...

BACKGROUND AND METHOD: Prevalence of urolithiasis is increasing in industrialized countries--in both adults and children, representing a unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Risk-adapted diagnostic imaging currently means assessment with maximized sensitivity and specificity together with minimal radiation exposure. In clinical routine, imaging is performed by sonography, unenhanced computed tomography (NCCT) or intravenous urography (IVU) as well as plain kidney-ureter-bladder (KUB) radiographs...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the quality of life of the holders of a ureteral double J stent (US) using the USSQ questionnaire (Ureteral Stent Symptom Questionnaire), validated in French in 2010. METHODS: Between January 2009 and December 2011, 249 patients underwent flexible ureteroscopy for urolithiais in our service. Among them, 160 received a US in perioperative, and they were sent self-questionnaire USSQ-FR retrospectively. The questionnaire includes 38 questions, concerning the perioperative period with US, and 4 weeks after its removal, grouped into 6 sections: urinary symptoms, pain, general health, professional resounding, sexual resounding, and other problems...

BACKGROUND: Increased incidence of renal stone has been reported in ankylosing spondylitis (AS), but unlike some well-known renal involvements, they have not been fully studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of AS with urolithiasis and also the relation between urinary stone and severity markers. METHODS: One hundred-sixty three AS patients were included in a cross-sectional study from Iranian AS association, Iran Rheumatology Center and Rheumatology Clinic of Shariati Hospital in Tehran...

OBJECTIVE: Little is known regarding the metabolic features associated with aging and gender in urolithiais patients. We compared the metabolic characteristics among 3 generations (young, middle-aged and old) with recurrent calcium-containing urinary stones. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-one patients with recurrent calcium-containing stones, including 71 patients aged </=45 years (group 1), 71 patients aged 46-60 years (group 2) and 39 patients aged >/=61 years (group 3), were investigated by metabolic evaluation...
