Few publications of exercise-induced rhabomyolysis currently exist in the medical literature besides case reports. However, this condition can be severe, resulting in hospitalization and IV fluid administration to prevent serious sequelae. This report describes a case of exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis caused by a CrossFit workout. A 31-year-old female presented with 2 days of bilateral upper extremity pain and soreness, which began 2 days after she completed a CrossFit workout. Workup revealed an elevated creatine phosphokinase (CPK) of 18 441 U/L, consistent with exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis, and elevated liver function tests and elevated D-dimer, although her renal function was normal...

A 63-year-old man presented in the emergency department with general malaise, asthenia, an erythematosquamous rash on face and forearms and severe hyponatremia. The rash appeared after working in his garden on a sunny afternoon without sunscreen protection (Figure 1A/B/C). Furosemide was stopped and once daily mometason furoate cream was prescribed. Hyponatremia was corrected by IV hypertonic fluids. Five days later, the rash spread to the upper legs, chest and back. An overdose of γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), a drug of abuse, results in fatality caused by severe respiratory depression. In this study, a semi-mechanistic pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) model was developed to characterize monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1)-mediated transport of GHB, as well as effects of GHB on respiration frequency, for IV doses of 200, 600, and 1500 mg/kg in rats.
