BACKGROUND: Achilles tendon injuries are common in adults, and there is extensive literature describing the injury characteristics and treatment of these adult injuries. However, Achilles injuries are rare in the pediatric population and as a result, there is limited research reported on this age group. We therefore sought to characterize the injury presentation, treatment and outcomes for pediatric patients with partial and complete Achilles injuries. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of patients aged 0-18 treated for Achilles tendon injuries at 2 geographically distinct tertiary institutions between 2008 and 2021...

UNLABELLED: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a type of hemolytic anemia in which autoantibodies attack the membrane antigens of red blood cells, causing cell rupture (lysis). Hemolysis stimulates compensatory RBC production by boosting erythropoietin levels; however, this response is often insufficient to restore normal hemoglobin blood levels, resulting in anemia. It is a rare disease, with an annual incidence of one case in every 80 000 live births. Infants of any age can be affected, though neonatal incidence is unusual...

UNLABELLED: Hemolysis is a known and usually self-limiting complication of transcatheter device closure of post-myocardial infarction ventricular septal rupture (VSR). Multiple defects, serpiginous pathways, friable margins, left ventricular aneurysms, and improper size of the device have been described as causes for persistent residual shunt across the device. We report a case of protracted hemolysis after device closure of VSR requiring surgical intervention. During device retrieval and patch closure, a muscular band was observed dividing the VSR into two, allowing residual shunt across the second defect...

Dislocations of the elbow joint are among the most prevalent dislocation injuries in the human body after shoulder joint dislocations and represent a challenge in the clinical routine because of the concomitant injuries and complications. They predominantly affect young adults who become injured during athletic or daily activities. A distinction is generally made between a simple elbow dislocation and a dislocation fracture of the elbow; however, a uniform classification or treatment algorithm has not yet been established, especially for simple elbow dislocations with associated ligamentous, muscular and capsular concomitant injuries...

The tearing of the muscle-tendon complex (MTC) is one of the common sports-related injuries. A better understanding of the mechanisms of rupture and its location could help clinicians improve the way they manage the rehabilitation period of patients. A new numerical approach using the discrete element method (DEM) may be an appropriate approach, as it considers the architecture and the complex behavior of the MTC. The aims of this study were therefore: first, to model and investigate the mechanical elongation response of the MTC until rupture with muscular activation...

Knowledge of muscular forces and adaptations with hamstring-specific exercises can optimize exercise prescription and tendon remodeling; however, studies investigating the effectiveness of the current conservative management of proximal hamstring tendinopathy (PHT) and outcomes are lacking. The purpose of this review is to provide insights into the efficacy of conservative therapeutic interventions in the management of PHT. In January 2022, databases including PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Embase were searched for studies assessing the effectiveness of conservative intervention compared with that of a placebo or combination of treatments on functional outcomes and pain...

Facial contusion may be accompanied by inconspicuous structural damage of the underlying muscular tissue, leading to unnatural expressions. Surgery can be a choice to correct this dynamic deformity. This case report describes a rare case of orbicularis oculi muscle rupture following blunt injury. Cosmetic improvement was achieved with the surgical restoration of the torn muscle. The etiology of this phenomenon is also discussed.

We present and exemplify the flow-diverted glue embolization to target lesions (FLOW-GET) technique for spinal vascular diseases. In this technique, the occlusion of the posterior intercostal artery or dorsal muscular branch by coils diverts the injected glue from the segmental artery to the target lesions. This technique was applied to a ruptured retrocorporeal artery aneurysm and spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas. The FLOW-GET accomplished the complete obliteration of all lesions. This simple and useful technique can be applied to spinal vascular lesions even if a microcatheter is not placed in proper feeders or advanced close to the shunt points or aneurysms...

OBJECTIVES: Ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening condition;delaying treatment can result in mortality or serious complications. Identification of a biomarker that can predict tubal rupture may be helpful for guiding treatment. In this study, we evaluated the association between serum β-hCG, biochemical markers, Systemic Immunity-inflammation Index (SII) score, and the trophoblastic invasion stage. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Tubal pregnancy was classified into three groups based on the depth of trophoblastic infiltration: stage I - limited to the mucosa; stage II - invaded the muscular layer, and stage III - invaded the serosa/subserosa of the tuba uterine...

BACKGROUND: Tubal ectopic pregnancies in the late stages of pregnancy are uncommon, and reports on their complications are scarce. We present the case of a woman who had a tubal ectopic pregnancy at around 34 weeks and developed severe pre-eclampsia complications. CASE: A 27-year-old woman presented to our hospital several times with vomiting and convulsions. A physical exam revealed hypertension, scattered ecchymosis, and a large abdominal mass. A computed tomography (CT) scan performed in an emergency revealed an empty uterus, a stillbirth baby in the abdominal cavity, and a crescent-shaped placenta...

Cell membrane repair is a critical process used to maintain cell integrity and survival from potentially lethal chemical, and mechanical membrane injury. Rapid increases in local calcium levels due to a membrane rupture have been widely accepted as a trigger for multiple membrane resealing models that utilize exocytosis, endocytosis, patching and shedding mechanisms. Calcium sensor proteins, such as synaptotagmins, dysferlin, S100 proteins and annexins have all been identified to regulate, or participate in, multiple modes of membrane repair...

Muscle atrophy refers to the deterioration of muscle tissue due to a long-term decrease in muscle function. In the present study, we simulated rectus femoris muscle atrophy experimentally and investigated the effect of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) application on the atrophy development through muscle mass, maximal contraction force, and contraction-relaxation time. A quadriceps tendon rupture with a total tenotomy was created on the rats' hind limbs, inhibiting knee extension for 6 weeks, and this restriction of the movement led to the development of disuse atrophy, while the control group underwent no surgery...

BACKGROUND: Disordered eating behaviour including binge-eating often results in significant medical conditions, which are at times fatal. It can result in acute gastric dilatation which can lead to ischemic necrosis and stomach rupture. Dyspepsia and bloating are common symptoms following binge eating. Patients commonly use over-the-counter medications like sodium bicarbonate or home remedies for relief. However, in very rare, reported cases, sodium bicarbonate has been attributed to cause acute gastric dilatation and spontaneous gastric rupture instead...

Although relatively uncommon, vascular injuries, such as thoracic outlet syndrome, axillary artery compression, quadrilateral space syndrome, and direct vascular trauma, can afflict these players. These career- and limb-threatening injuries can mimic often seen muscular sprains and strains in their early stages with nonspecific symptoms, such as exertional fatigue, which can delay diagnosis with disastrous sequelae, including thrombus propagation, aneurysm rupture, and ischemia from distal embolization...
