Amine-based pharmaceuticals are a significant class of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursors. This study investigated the use of unactivated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to control amine-based pharmaceuticals and their NDMA formation potential. Kinetic analysis and product identification revealed that sumatriptan and doxylamine primarily underwent reactions at their tertiary amine group, while ranitidine and nizatidine had both tertiary amine and thioether group as reaction sites. The NDMA formation from sumatriptan and doxylamine during post-chloramination was significantly reduced with the abatement of the parent contaminants, while the formation of NDMA remained high even if full abatement of ranitidine and nizatidine was achieved...

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal and readily accumulates in tobacco, which imperils public health via Cd exposure from smoking. Beneficial microbes have a pivotal role in promoting plant growth, especially under environmental stresses such as heavy metal stresses. In this study, we introduced a novel fungal strain Trichoderma nigricans T32781, and investigated its capacity to alleviate Cd-induced stress in tobacco plants through comprehensive physiological and omics analyses. Our findings revealed that T32781 inoculation in soil leads to a substantial reduction in Cd-induced growth inhibition...

Flavin mononucleotide (FMN) is a dye belonging to the flavin family. These dyes produce photosensitized degradation of organic compounds via reaction with the excited states of the dye or with reactive oxygen species photogenerated from the triplet of the dye. This article presents a new polymeric dye (FMN-CS) composed of the photosensitizer FMN covalently bonded to chitosan polysaccharide (CS). FMN-CS obtained has a molecular weight of 230 × 103  g mol-1 and a deacetylation degree of 74...

Ice is an important medium that regulates the transformation of organic contaminants. Nonetheless, photodegradation of emerging fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics in the ice, particularly those with varying dissociated species, remains inadequately explored. In this study, the photodegradation of norfloxacin (NOR) and ofloxacin (OFL) in different dissociated species in water ice were investigated. Results indicated that the quantum yield of the zwitterion for NOR in the ice was 1.7-5.0 times higher than that of the cation, and 1...

Oxygen- and nitrogen-heteroatom-doped, water-dispersible, and bright blue-fluorescent carbon dots (ON-CDs) were prepared for the selective and sensitive determination of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid, PA). ON-CDs with 49.7% quantum yield were one-pot manufactured by the reflux method using citric acid, d-glucose, and ethylenediamine precursors. The surface morphology of ON-CDs was determined by scanning transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, Raman, infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques, and their photophysical properties were estimated by fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence lifetime measurement, and 3D-fluorescence excitation-emission matrix analysis...

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted tremendous interest due to the unusual electronic and optoelectronic properties of isolated monolayers and the ability to assemble diverse monolayers into complex heterostructures. To understand the intrinsic properties of TMDs and fully realize their potential in applications and fundamental studies, high-purity materials are required. Plants that hyperaccumulate heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) are important agents of phytoremediation. Availability of resources such as light, nutrients, and water can affect heavy metal accumulation by plants, but the responses of hyperaccumulators to different levels of resource availability remain little studied. To test such responses, three Cd hyperaccumulators, Solanum nigrum, Bidens pilosa, and Taraxacum mongolicum, were grown in Cd-contaminated soil; subjected to three levels of light, nutrient, or water availability; and measured for growth, Cd accumulation, and photosynthetic efficiency...

Work to combat counterfeiting has always been crucial to defending the interests of the public. The usual anti-counterfeiting marks are now fundamental and easy to imitate. Therefore, it is more beneficial to anti-counterfeiting work to develop an anti-counterfeiting mark with more variations to make forgery more difficult. Due to its exceptional stability and fluorescence variability, carbon dots (CDs), a newly developed fluorescent material, offer a wide range of potential applications in anti-counterfeiting...

Man-made reservoirs are important for human daily lives and offer different functions, however they are contaminated due to anthropogenic activities. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) from each reservoir is unique in composition, which further determines its photo-reactivity. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the photo-reactivity of reservoir DOM in terms of the quantum yield for photo-production of singlet oxygen (Ф1O2 ). We sampled surface water of 50 reservoirs in Japan and determined their Ф1O2 using simulated sunlight together with bulk water analysis...

Composition and source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water influence the rate of production of reactive intermediates (RIs), affecting the photodegradation of phenolic contaminants of emerging concern (PhCECs). However, this relationship has not been fully quantified. Here, for the first time, we propose a mechanism for photodegradation of a surrogate of PhCECs, p-cresol, in different DOM standard solutions under simulated sunlight irradiation. More importantly, the correlation of DOM optical parameters and p-cresol photodegradation kinetic parameters was determined by Pearson correlation...

Herein, the removal of six typical BT-UVs by UV/H2 O2 was comprehensively investigated by quantum chemistry calculation integrated with CFD simulation. Utilizing such a micro and macro incorporated model in treating contaminants is the first report. From the micro-view, degradation mechanisms of BT-UVs by •OH oxidation were determined, and corresponding rate constants were obtained with values of 109 ∼1010 M-1 s-1 ...

Concerns over human health risks associated with chemical contaminants (micropollutants) in drinking waters are rising due to the increased use of reclaimed water or water supplies impacted by upstream wastewater discharges. Ultraviolet (UV)-driven advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) using radiation sources that emit at 254 nm have been developed as advanced treatments to degrade contaminants, while those UV-AOPs can be improved towards higher radical yields and lower byproduct formation. Several previous studies have suggested that Far-UVC radiation (200-230 nm) is a promising radiance source to drive UV-AOPs because the direct photolysis of micropollutants and production of reactive species from oxidant precursors can both be improved...
