In these days of political vagueness, to use a kinder term, although many would describe the situation as turmoil, in Europe, there are success stories to be lauded. Notwithstanding the direction individual countries choose in relation to closer or not so close co-operation in Europe and the direction the political agenda will travel over the next few years, I believe science and in particular medicine has benefited enormously form close co-operation across the European Union and with colleagues outside this political and trading block of nations...

The European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) recommends that ultrasound should be used systematically as an easy accessible and instructive educational tool in the curriculum of modern medical schools. Medical students should acquire theoretical knowledge of the modality and hands-on training should be implemented and adhere to evidence-based principles. In this paper we report EFSUMB policy statements on medical student education in ultrasound that in a short version is already published in Ultraschall in der Medizin 1...

The impact factor (IF) for 2015 was recently released and this could be the time to once again reflect on its use as a metric of a journal. Problems and concerns regarding the IF have been addressed extensively elsewhere 1 2. The principle of the IF for a given year is that it represents the average number of citations of articles published in the journal in the two previous years. While authors frequently cite the IF as a determining factor for submission, the IF does not predict how many times individual articles will be cited...

Doppler ultrasound scanning is the first line investigation for quantifying the internal carotid artery stenosis. Nevertheless, the lack of internationally accepted ultrasound criteria for describing the degree of stenosis has contributed to the different and confusing measurements ranges. The use of two different angiographic methods, the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endoarterectomy Study and the European Carotid Surgery Trial was probably the major initial source of confusion in deriving valid and reliable duplex ultrasound criteria worldwide...

Vaginal ultrasound probes are semi-critical Group A medical products which must be disinfected following the manufacturer's instructions after every patient examination. According to the "Essential Requirements for Medical Devices (Directive 93/42/EEC, Annex I, paragraph 13)" the manufacturer's instructions for use for reusable products must contain suitable instructions for preparation processes. This presumes both an effective and material-compatible method. Evidence of effectiveness must be validated. In the Editorial in issue 1 Ultraschall in der Medizin/European Journal of Ultrasound 2005 we discussed the topic of transducer hygiene and stated that proper handling and cleaning as well as disinfection of probes in daily use are indispensable...

This article deals with the technical quality assurance of ultrasound B-systems. As part of a mini-trial during the Dreiländertreffen in Davos "Ultrasound 2012", we addressed the question as to whether physicians can detect faulty probes spontaneously during live scanning B-mode. For this purpose a special diagnostic device had been prepared so that groups of piezoelectric elements in the array were without function. Then the images had to be characterized by test persons without knowledge of the faulty elements...

PURPOSE: This study investigates the distortion of geometry of catheters and anatomy in acquired U/S images, caused by utilizing various stand-off materials for covering a transrectal bi-planar ultrasound probe in HDR and LDR prostate brachytherapy, biopsy and other interventional procedures. Furthermore, an evaluation of currently established water-bath based quality assurance (QA) procedures is presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Image acquisitions of an ultrasound QA setup were carried out at 5 MHz and 7 MHz...

Initially, a set of guidelines for the use of ultrasound contrast agents was published in 2004 dealing only with liver applications. A second edition of the guidelines in 2008 reflected changes in the available contrast agents and updated the guidelines for the liver, as well as implementing some non-liver applications. Time has moved on, and the need for international guidelines on the use of CEUS in the liver has become apparent. The present document describes the third iteration of recommendations for the hepatic use of contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) using contrast specific imaging techniques...

The focus of this article is the emergent and potential indications of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Emergent applications of CEUS techniques include extravascular and intracavitary contrast-enhanced ultrasound, quantitative assessment of microvascular circulation for tumor response assessment, and tumor characterization using dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (DCE-US). Potential indications for microbubble agents include novel molecular imaging and drug and gene delivery techniques, which have been successfully tested in animal models...

Ultrasound in addition to endoscopy and radiological methods has become widely accepted for diagnosis and evaluation of therapeutic success of gastrointestinal diseases. In addition to the lumen and more importantly the wall (layering) and the surroundings of the gastrointestinal tract functional processes (peristalsis, bloodflow) can be analysed as well. The current role of gastrointestinal ultrasound was discussed during the Davos meeting 2011 of the «Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Ultraschall» (SGUM) and the literature is summarised in this article...
