The advent of COVID-19 prompted the enforced isolation of elderly and vulnerable populations around the world, for their own safety. For people in prison, these restrictions risked compounding the isolation and harm they experienced. At the same time, the pandemic created barriers to prison oversight when it was most needed to ensure that the state upheld the rights and wellbeing of those in custody. This article reports findings from a unique collaboration in Ireland between the Office of the Inspector of Prisons - a national prison oversight body - and academic criminologists...

INTRODUCTION: Leptomeningeal melanocytomas are rare tumours originating from neural crest derived melanocytes. They are usually solitary and presentation with multifocal meningeal melanocytoma is very rare and indicative of potentially more aggressive behaviour. This case report and scoping review sought to evaluate the presentation, and key radiological features that can help differentiate multifocal meningeal melanocytoma from other differentials and provide a discussion of the key management and prognostic points once these tumours are diagnosed...

Based on lineage-specific transcription factors, small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SmCC) of the urinary bladder has recently been subtyped into three molecular subtypes: ASCL1, NEUROD1 and POU2F3. The latter is a master transcriptional regulator of tuft cells (TCs) which are rare solitary cells found in various mucosal epithelia such as the gastrointestinal tract, but which have not been reported in the bladder. The POU2F3 subtype shows low or absent neuroendocrine marker expression. A case of mixed SmCC and conventional-type urothelial carcinoma (CUC) of the urinary bladder with POU2F3-expressing intraepithelial small-cell carcinoma in keeping with a tuft cell phenotype, arising in association with intestinal metaplasia (IM) is described...

BACKGROUND: A solitary plasmacytoma is classified into a solitary plasmacytoma of the bone (SBP) and a solitary extramedullary (soft tissue mass) plasmacytoma, based on the site of the lesion. Despite the high local control rate with radiotherapy, approximately half of patients' conditions progress to multiple myeloma (MM) within 3-5 years after diagnosis, with SBP having a worse prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively assessed the treatment and outcomes of patients with SBP in a hospital in China from 2008 to 2021...

A 72-year-old man presented with a painless penile mass for 3 months. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed heterogeneous enhancement, whereas 18F-FDG PET/CT displayed inhomogeneous 18F-FDG accumulation in the lesion without other abnormal activity. The histopathological examination from biopsied specimen confirmed the diagnosis of a plasmacytoma. However, the subsequent tests, including serum/urine immunofixation electrophoresis, serum/urine free light chain assay, and bone marrow smear/biopsy, did not show any abnormalities...

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors of the liver (SFTL) are rare neoplasms, whose identification and definition of malignant potential are challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old patient underwent conventional imaging and CEUS to characterize an indeterminate liver lesion after other imaging techniques were inconclusive. In fact, all diagnostic techniques concluded that it was a partially fibrotic lesion, while CEUS determined its extra-hepatocellular origin and malignant potential, initially hypothesized to be a cholangiocarcinoma...

Solitons in nematic liquid crystals facilitate the rapid transport and sensing in microfluidic systems. Little is known about the elementary conditions needed to create solitons in nematic materials. In this study, we apply a combination of theory, computational simulations, and experiments to examine the formation and propagation of solitary waves, or "solitons", in nematic liquid crystals under the influence of an alternating current (AC) electric field. We find that these solitary waves exhibit "butterfly"-like or "bullet"-like structures that travel in the direction perpendicular to the applied electric field...

BACKGROUND: Thermal ablation is routinely used for solitary colorectal liver metastases (SCLM), but the added value of adjuvant systemic therapy in SCLM remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the long-term outcomes for SCLM treated by ablation alone (AB) versus ablation plus systemic therapy (AS). METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study using nationwide data from fourteen institutions between October 2010 and May 2023, 369 patients with initial SCLM smaller than 5 cm, no extrahepatic metastases, and colorectal cancer R0 resection treated by thermal ablation were included...

During 2021-2022, anthracnose symptoms were observed on leaves of H. longipes with over 70% disease incidence in Wanju-gun (35°38'47''N; 127°31'16''E) and Jangsu-gun (35°35'31''N; 127°30'03''E) in Jeollabuk-do, Korea. This study characterizes the chromosomal organization of DNA repetitive sequences and the karyotypic evolution in four representatives of the solitary wasp genus Trypoxylon using conventional and molecular cytogenetic techniques. Our findings present the first cytogenetic data for T. rogenhoferi (2n=30) and T. albonigrum (2n=32) while the karyotypes of T. nitidum (2n=30) and T. lactitarse (2n=30) were similar to those described previously. Post-traumatic compartment syndrome in the lower extremity has been commonly associated with fractures of the tibia. NMR-based measurements of the diffusion coefficients and rotation times of solitary water and benzene at 300 K are reported in a diverse collection of 13 conventional organic solvents and 10 imidazolium ionic liquids. Proton chemical shifts of water are found to be correlated to water OH-stretching frequencies, confirming the importance of electrostatic interactions in these shifts. However, the influence of magnetic interactions in aromatic solvents renders chemical shifts a less reliable indicator of electrostatics...

Dispersal increases the costs of feeding and predation risk in the new environment and is reported to be biased toward habitats similar to the natal region in some mammals. The benefits and costs of dispersal often differ between sexes, and most mammals show male-biased dispersal in relation to a polygamous mating system. Japanese serow is generally a solitary and monogamous species. However, recent studies have shown that the sociality of serows on Mt. Asama differs between habitat types. In the mountain forests with low forage availability, solitary habits and social monogamy were observed, while, in alpine grasslands, female grouping and social polygyny were observed, which is probably due to abundant forage availability...

Salvia splendens is a popular ornamental plant in China with extensive potentials, including value in traditional Chinese medicine and in environmental restoration function (Li et al. 2008). In September 2019, leaf blight disease was observed on road side plants of S. splendens in Bayi park, Nanchang city, Jiangxi province, China. The typical symptoms appeared as irregular necrotic spots or leaf blight, accompanied by extensive scorch necrosis or ultimately defoliation. Small segments cut from diseased leaves were surface sterilized in a 2% sodium hypochlorite solution for 2 min and rinsed three times with sterile distilled water...

Materials and methods This retrospective cohort study was conducted in an Eastern population in a single center from 2016 through 2023 at The Kidney Centre Postgraduate Training Institute, Karachi, Pakistan. Tuberculomas are rare and a life-threatening condition. Diagnosis followed by appropriate treatment can lead to complete resolution of the disease. A suggestive imaging study in an appropriate clinical setting can lead to the diagnosis. We describe a case of a postpartum woman with a headache and seizure in which eclampsia was the initial suspicion. Imaging exams demonstrated a solitary expansile lesion in the left parietal lobe suspicious of neoplasia. A biopsy, instead, confirmed a tuberculoma. In addition to eclampsia, many other differential diagnoses are possible in the context of seizures in pregnant and peripartum patients, including central nervous system tuberculosis...
