Acromegalic patients always demonstrate a wide range of clinic manifestations, including typical physical changes such as acral and facial features, as well as untypical neuropsychiatric and psychological disturbances. However, there is still a lack of clinical guidance on the treatment for acromegalic patients with psychiatric comorbidities. We therefore share this case to provide a reference for clinicians to manage the acromegalic patients with psychiatric symptoms. This case report describes a 41-year-old male with an 8-year history of acromegaly due to growth hormone-secreting pituitary adenoma, the maximum cross-sectional area of which was 42 mm × 37 mm demonstrated by pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)...

Intracranial lipomas are rare benign congenital tumours, consisting of <0.1% of all primary brain tumours. They are asymptomatic and are thus incidentally discovered whenever brain imaging is advised due to any other organic cause. These lipomas can rarely present with acute psychosis or schizophrenia-like symptoms characterised by abnormal perceptions, cognition, mood, and behaviour. One of the most frequent symptoms of schizophrenia is hallucination. In patients with schizophrenia, hallucinatory experiences can have an impact on any of the five senses; however, auditory hallucinations are the most common...

OBJECTIVES: To report two different presentations of migraine with the olfactory hallucinations. A case with the typical hallucinatory olfactory symptoms preceding migraine headaches and another case with longstanding olfactory hallucinations. BACKGROUND: Migraine prevails in about 12% of the general population, with the migraine aura accountable for at least one-third of these cases. The most common aura is the visual aura, followed by the sensory aura, speech, and motor auras...

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a rare and chronic neurological disease characterized by sudden sleep attacks, overwhelming daytime drowsiness, and cataplexy. When associated with a sudden loss of muscle tone (cataplexy) narcolepsy is classified as type 1, while the absence of cataplexy indicates type 2. Genetic, degenerative, and immunological hypotheses to explain the pathophysiology of NT1 are still a matter of debate. To contribute to the understanding of NT1 genetic basis, here we describe, for the first time, a whole genome analysis of a monozygotic twin pair discordant for NT1...

Background: Olfactory hallucination refers to olfactory perception in the absence of chemical stimuli. Although it has been associated with many neurological and psychotic disorders, it has rarely been reported as the first and only symptom in patients with anxiety disorder, and its treatment remains inadequate. Case summary: A 66-year-old woman who had been experiencing gradually worsening olfactory hallucinations for almost 4 years was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder...

Hallucinations and delusions in borderline personality disorder (BPD) are understudied. The authors explore the phenomenology of multisensory hallucinations and delusions in individuals with BPD and compare them to those in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Clinical psychopathology was also explored. Eighty-nine adults participated and were categorized into four groups: BPD with voices, BPD without voices, SSD with high BPD traits, and SSD with low BPD traits. Among individuals with BPD, 81% reported visual and tactile hallucinations, 75% reported olfactory hallucinations, and 94% experienced delusions...

Delusional parasitosis (DP) is psychiatric disorder characterized by the unshakeable belief of being infested by endo- or ectoparasites, without any evidence of infestations. Hence, DP sufferers often consult medical entomologists or dermatologists, rather than seeking help from a mental health practitioner. Here we present 39 cases of suspected DP occurred in twenty years in two Italian public medical entomology laboratories, to highlight their common features and peculiarities, based on the interviews and material brought to our laboratories...

Although epidemiological studies report that hallucinations occur in 6-15% of the general population, little is known about their phenomenology. To overcome this paucity, this study investigates the phenomenological characteristics of hallucinations in the general population, by using a nationally promoted online survey to assess hallucination phenomenology in four sensory modalities, through a self-report version of the Questionnaire for Psychotic Experiences (QPE), in 10,448 participants (aged 14-88 years)...

Objectives  Controversy exists surrounding the optimal approaches to tuberculum sella meningioma (TSM) and planum meningioma (PM). Olfaction is infrequently considered within this context but is nonetheless an important quality of life measure. The evolution of olfactory outcomes following contemporary transcranial surgery remains unclear. This study reviews olfactory outcomes after supraorbital craniotomy for TSM or PM and defines temporal trends in its recovery. Study Design  A prospective study of a patients who underwent a minimally invasive supraorbital craniotomy for TSM or PM was conducted at a single neurosurgical center...

Parosmia, distorted smell sensations, is a common consequence of respiratory virus infections. The phenomenon is not well understood in terms of its impact and long-term outcomes. We examined self-reported experiences of parosmia in a population-based sample from the Betula study that was conducted in Umeå in northern Sweden (baseline data collected in 1998-2000). We used a baseline sample of 2168 individuals aged 35-90 years and with no cognitive impairment at baseline. We investigated the prevalence of parosmia experiences and, using regression analyses, its relationship to other olfactory and cognitive variables and quality of life...

Previous research has shown that the relationship between childhood abuse and the presence of auditory hallucinations is mediated by dissociation, specifically depersonalization and absorption. The current study assessed dissociation as a mediator of the relationship between childhood abuse and auditory hallucination frequency, characteristics and associated distress in those with dissociative identity disorder (DID; n = 50) and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD; n = 49). It also tested whether dissociation mediated the relationship between childhood abuse and the presence of non-auditory hallucinations...

Phantosmia is a condition in perceived odors that do not exist. Given the high outlook and swift recovery of COVID-19-induced olfactory dysfunction, the emphasis should be on patients presenting with a poor prognosis who might receive from early management to avoid sequelae such as olfactory dysfunction-related phantosmia.

Phenomenon of induced delusional disorder has a relatively long, controversial history of conceptualization. It is a rare entity and goes undiagnosed mostly as only the primary partner is brought to clinical attention. We present a case series of induced delusional disorder with different presentations. For effective management, understanding the dynamics of relationship shared by the partners and addressing the biopsychosocial factors are crucial. Failure to adhere to treatment poses additional challenge in these cases...

Deficiencies in smell and taste are common symptoms of COVID-19. Quantitative losses are well surveyed. This study focuses on qualitative changes such as phantosmia (hallucination of smell), parosmia (alteration of smell), and dysgeusia (alteration of taste) and possible connections with the adaptive immune system. Subjective experience of deficiency in taste and smell was assessed by two different questionnaires after a median of 100 and 244 days after first positive RT-PCR test. SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody levels were measured with the iFlash-SARS-CoV-2 assay...

The spectrum of autoimmune encephalitis (AE) encompasses several entities characterized by a variable frequency of psychiatric symptoms, cognitive dysfunction, focal deficits, and seizures. Although patients with AE can be categorized in specific syndromes, overlapping manifestations are also common. Furthermore, atypical correlations between clinical phenotypes and autoantibody profiles could occur in rare cases. Here, we report the rare case of a young adult man attending due to new-onset seizures and a history of memory loss, autonomic disturbances, headache, behavioral changes, and visual and olfactory hallucinations...

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge toll on both the physical and mental health of people around the globe. Neuropsychiatric symptoms, as well as long-term sequelae, have been demonstrated in those afflicted with COVID-19. These symptoms range from cognitive, attention deficit, new-onset anxiety, depression, psychosis, seizures, and post-traumatic stress. Prolonged lockdown led to social isolation which negatively affected the mental well-being of many individuals. This particularly caused a relapse of psychiatric symptoms due to stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic...

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction is a typical symptom of COVID-19 infection. While COVID-associated anosmia is well-described, knowledge of parosmia (olfactory distortions) and phanthosmia (olfactory hallucinations) is relatively lacking. We undertook a clinical study of the parosmia/phanthosmia phenotype, aiming to support improved prediction and management of these symptoms. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional study between September 2020 and May 2021, we recruited 187 COVID-19 patients with parosmia/phanthosmia via social media and a matched healthy control group from neurologists...
