Background: Tulobuterol patch, one of strongest bronchodilators, was recently shown to improve bronchial hyperresponsiveness and significantly decrease the sputum eosinophil counts by combining with nonspecific anti-inflammatory drugs on patients with asthma. However, there is limited study on the anti-inflammatory activities of tulobuterol patch and its potential machenism. Results: The tulobuterol patch significantly ameliorated inflammatory cell infiltration in the lung tissue, reduced the number of total leukocytes and its differential count, markedly reduced the production of IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, CCL-11 and IL-4 in bronchial alveolar lavage fluid, as well as a reduction in IL-4/IFN-γ ratio...

BACKGROUND: High resolution images of Drosophila embryos in their developmental stages contain rich spatial and temporal information of gene expression. Automatic extraction of the contour of an embryo of interest in an embryonic image is a critical step of a computational system used to discover gene-gene interaction on Drosophila. RESULTS: We propose a geometric method for contour extraction of Drosophila embryos. The key of the proposed geometric method is k-dominant point extraction that is a generalization of 3-dominant point extraction proposed in our previous work...

PI3K-AKT-mTOR signaling is a valuable treatment target for human glioma. LY3023414 is a novel, highly-potent and pan PI3K-AKT-mTOR inhibitor. Here, we show that LY3023414 efficiently inhibited survival and proliferation of primary and established human glioma cells. Meanwhile, apoptosis activation was observed in LY3023414-treated glioma cells. LY3023414 blocked AKT-mTOR activation in human glioma cells. Further studies show that LY3023414 induced feedback activation of autophagy in U251MG cells. On the other hand, autophagy inhibition via adding pharmacological inhibitors or silencing Beclin-1/ATG-5 significantly potentiated LY3023414-induced glioma cell apoptosis...

BACKGROUND: An automated and accurate headspace gas chromatographic (HS-GC) technique was investigated for rapidly quantifying water content in edible oils. In this method, multiple headspace extraction (MHE) procedures were used to analyse the integrated water content from the edible oil sample. A simple vapour phase calibration technique with an external vapour standard was used to calibrate both the water content in the gas phase and the total weight of water in edible oil sample. After that the water in edible oils can be quantified...

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an inherited and systemic disorder. It has been reported that mutations in the fibrillin‑1 gene (FBN1) account for ~90% of autosomal dominant cases of MFS. This study was conducted to screen mutations of FBN1 in a Chinese family with autosomal dominant MFS; four individuals including two patients with MFS were recruited. The family members underwent complete physical, cardiovascular and ophthalmologic examinations. Genomic DNA samples were collected from the family along with 383 unrelated healthy subjects...

This work investigates an automated technique for rapid detecting the glucose content in glucose injection by reaction headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC). This method is based on the oxidation reaction of glucose in glucose injection with potassium dichromate. The carbon dioxide (CO2) formed from the oxidation reaction can be quantitatively detected by GC. The results show that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the present method was within 2.91%, and the measured glucose contents in glucose injection closely match those quantified by the reference method (relative differences <6...
