Idiopathic scrotal calcinosis (ISC) is a rare benign condition which presents with multiple, asymptomatic, and painless nodules on the scrotal skin wall. The lesions have been attributed as sebaceous cysts, calcified steatocystoma, fibroma, atheroma, and xanthoma. Shapiro et al. reviewed the histologic data and found no evidence of an epithelial lining, residual cysts, and lipid or organisms, and concluded that the calcification was idiopathic introducing the term "idiopathic scrotal calcinosis." We have studied four cases of idiopathic scrotal calcinosis, one of which had scrotal calcinosis involving the whole of the scrotum...

The Parenting Scale (PS) is a well-established instrument for measuring discipline practices in Western populations. However, whether the PS is a valid and reliable measure in Eastern populations is not known. Thus, this study examined the psychometric properties of the PS in a sample of 433 Vietnamese parents of children aged 2-7 years. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) examined the commonly used Reitman et al.'s two-factor and Rhoades and O'Leary's three-factor solutions. Neither factor structure fit the data...

This article addresses the intriguing hydrogen-abstraction (H-abstraction) and oxygen-transfer (O-transfer) reactivity of a series of nonheme [Fe(IV)(O)(TMC)(Lax)](z+) complexes, with a tetramethyl cyclam ligand and a variable axial ligand (Lax), toward three substrates: 1,4-cyclohexadiene, 9,10-dihydroanthracene, and triphenyl phosphine. Experimentally, O-transfer-reactivity follows the relative electrophilicity of the complexes, whereas the corresponding H-abstraction-reactivity generally increases as the axial ligand becomes a better electron donor, hence exhibiting an antielectrophilic trend...

Recently we have reported structural transformation features of SnO(2) upon initial charging using a configuration that leads to the sequential lithiation of SnO(2) nanowire from one end to the other (Huang et al. Science2010, 330, 1515). A key question to be addressed is the lithiation behavior of the nanowire when it is fully soaked into the electrolyte (Chiang Science2010, 330, 1485). This Letter documents the structural characteristics of SnO(2) upon initial charging based on a battery assembled with a single nanowire anode, which is fully soaked (immersed) into an ionic liquid based electrolyte using in situ transmission electron microscopy...

The present work characterized a new endogenous cellulase (endo-β-1,4-glucanase) gene, CfEG5, uncovered in the transcriptome of Formosan subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus). The full-length gene was cloned and sequenced. It is similar to the CfEG3a described earlier (Zhang et al., 2009) but not likely an allelic variant. GenomeWalker™ DNA walking analysis indicated that there may be one copy of CfEG5 and two copies of CfEG3a in the termite genome. As with CfEG3a, the transcript of CfEG5 was detected predominantly in the salivary gland based on quantitative RT-PCR...

Starting from the vector Maxwell's equations and applying the multiscale singular perturbation method, the nonparaxial beam propagation is studied in free space. Two new equations have been derived for transverse and longitudinal electric fields of an arbitrary polarized electromagnetic wave even in the case of tightly focused nonparaxial laser beams. By using the analogy of the optical beam in the space domain and the optical pulse in the time domain, the higher-order diffraction term is introduced. For strongly nonparaxial beams that are characterized by large values of the perturbative parameter, our correction solutions yield an accurate description of the field in the near-field region and are consistent with all other correction results obtained by others in the far-field region...

Confirmatory factor analyses based on the scoring derived from 5 prior studies of the Parenting Scale were conducted using a representatively recruited sample of 453 couples parenting 3-to 7-year-old children. Comparative analyses favored the Reitman et al. (2001) 2-factor scoring system as well as a 3-factor solution, including Lax, Overreactive, and Hostile discipline. This 3-factor solution demonstrated good fit across parent gender and child age and gender. Mothers rated themselves as more overreactive than fathers...

We use the inverse scattering method to determine the weak limit of solutions of the Korteweg-deVries equation as dispersion tends to zero. The limit, valid for all time, is characterized in terms of a quadratic programming problem which can be solved with the aid of function theoretic methods. For large t, the solutions satisfy Whitham's averaged equations at some times and the equations found by Flaschka et al. at other times.

Five experiments probed the conditions under which observers fail to report instantaneous reversals in the direction of motion of pixels that define the rotation of a transparent sphere or plane. Our results showed that the extent to which rotation reversals were not reported depended upon whether observers used strict or lax criteria to make their judgments, the degree of perspective present in the rotation simulations, and the percentage of pixels that actually reversed direction. Furthermore, we found failures to report rotation reversals both with stimuli whose pixels were confined to smooth surfaces and scattered within volumes...

The objective of the investigation was to compare the degree of interobserver agreement in determining the histological grade of uterine endometrial endometrioid adenocarcinoma using the criteria proposed by the three-grade FIGO classification (1988) and the new, two-grade system proposed by Lax et al. (2000). In the FIGO system, the assessment is focused on the amount of solid, non-squamous growth pattern and the additional feature is the presence of the so-called "notable nuclear atypia" (nuclear grade), with the latter criterion not having been precisely defined...

It is shown that the approach proposed by Lax et al. [Phys. Rev. A 11, 1365 (1975)] for studying the propagation of an electromagnetic beam beyond the paraxial approximation can be efficiently employed evenwhen the beam under consideration presents a very nonparaxial character. The method that we present consists of applying a nonlinear resummation scheme, the so-called delta transformation, to the divergent perturbative series arising from the Lax scheme. Numerical results pertinent to the evaluation of transverse and longitudinal components of the electric field are presented for the particular case of vectorial Gaussian beams, showing the effectiveness of the method...

The kinetics, binding equilibria and stoichiometry of the interaction between epidermal growth factor and the soluble extracellular domain of the epidermal growth factor receptor (sEGFR), produced in CHO cells using a bioreactor, have been studied by three methods: analytical ultracentrifugation, biosensor analysis using surface plasmon resonance detection (BIAcore 2000) and fluorescence anisotropy. These studies were performed with an sEGFR preparation purified in the absence of detergent using a mild two step chromatographic procedure employing anion exchange and size exclusion HPLC...

The psychometric properties of the Parenting Scale (Arnold, O'Leary, Wolff, and Acker, 1993), a 30-item instrument originally developed to assess the discipline practices of parents of preschool children, were examined for parents of middle school students. Subjects were 298 parents of middle school student identified as at-risk for problem behavior. An exploratory factor analysis identified two factors labeled 'Overreactivity' and 'Laxness', closely resembling two of the factors found by Arnold et al., but each of these factors contained only six items...

Analysis of a 32.8-kb segment of DNA from the rapamycin (Rp) producer, Streptomyces hygroscopicus ATCC 29253, revealed a new type-I polyketide synthase (PKS) cluster consisting of four open reading frames (ORF 1-4), each encoding a single PKS module. The four ORFs are transcribed in the same direction and are flanked by several smaller ORFs (ORF 5-9), which may be related to the PKS cluster. The first PKS-containing ORF has a ligase domain at the N-terminus of the polypeptide. This domain has 55% aa identity to the CoA ligase domain of the Rp PKS (Schwecke et al...

Metastases in the choroid of the eye are frequent in patients with disseminated malignancy. We here report the results using the precision radiotherapy technique described by Schipper et al. to treat 14 of 17 consecutive patients (21 eyes) with symptoms from such metastases. A beam defining collimator was used and a lateral field was given with the treated eye individually fixed. Varying fractionations and doses were used. The biologically effective dose for early effects (BED3) was 47 to 90 Gy and for late effects (BED10) 28 to 59 Gy...

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is characterised by an abnormal fragility of the bones, and more or less marked blue sclerae. The mode of inheritance is both autosomal dominant and recessive. Facultatively, dentinogenesis imperfecta, abnormal laxness of joint ligaments, and, in early adulthood, deafness, may also be associated. In numerous cases, dwarfism, which may be very marked, and kyphoscoliosis of varying degrees, may also be found. The presumed cause of OI is a disturbance of collagen metabolism, which is associated with an insufficiency state of the osteoblasts; this leads to inadequate formation of osteoid and bone...

A psychiatrist's pregnancy creates different problems and opportunities, depending upon the professional role(s) that she occupies. In previous reports, authors have described the impact of a psychiatrist's pregnancy in private or subordinate roles such as therapist (Lax 1969; Nadelson et al. 1974), resident (Butts and Cavenar 1979), or supervisee (Baum and Herring 1975). Here I discuss additional complexities that may occur when the pregnant woman occupies a position of leadership.
