Imaging of the rectum, anorectal junction and surrounding tissues is both difficult and technically challenging. CT and conventional barium studies offer limited information in local staging of rectal and perirectal neoplasms, anal carcinomas and extension perianal fistulas in patients with inflamamatory bowel disease, or in evaluating patients with fecal incontinence.
