PURPOSE: Gastrointestinal tract is one of the most affected systems in hypothyroidism. Despite decreased esophageal emptying, prolonged esophageal and gastric transit time have been indicated in previous reports, the mechanism of thyroid hormones activity and antibodies on the esophagus motility is not yet fully understood. This study was conducted to evaluate the esophagus motility by manometry in hypothyroid patients. METHODS: The study enrolled with 28 overt, newly diagnosed hypothyroid patients and 29 age- and sex-matched healthy controls...

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid autoimmune diseases have been associated with a variety of rheumatologic diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of thyroid autoimmune diseases in patients with SLE. METHODS: Transversal study to compare the prevalence of thyroid disorders in 106 patients with SLE and a control group of 102 patients. The patients were submitted to a clinical and a laboratorial evaluation; the tests included antiperoxidase and antithyroglobulin antibodies, TSH, free T4 and T3...

BACKGROUND: The effect of GH replacement on thyroid function in hypopituitary patients has hitherto been studied in small groups of children and adults with conflicting results. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to define the effect and clinical significance of adult GH replacement on thyroid status in a large cohort of GH-deficient patients. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We studied 243 patients with severe GH deficiency due to various hypothalamo-pituitary disorders...

The efficacy in viral neoplastic illness of IFN alpha therapy is responsible of an increasing use of this drug. Disease like hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, thyreotoxicosis, pernicious anemia, LES, vasculitis, thrombocytopenic purpura and, more recently, diabete mellitus, have been described during IFN alpha therapy. We describe another case of diabetes mellitus induced by IFN alpha.

A 65-year-old woman suffered from both chronic gastroesophageal reflux, which was complicated by columnar metaplasia (Barrett's epithelium), and profound hypothyroidism. An esophageal motility tracing showed absence of peristalsis in the lower esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) could not be identified. Thyroid replacement therapy, in conjunction with antacid and cimetidine treatment, was associated not only with improvement in the gastroesophageal reflux symptoms, but also with a return of esophageal peristalsis and LES pressure to normal...

In the normal and hypothyroid 6-day-old rat, the specific radioactivity (RSA) and the relative RSA (ratio of the RSA to the [3H] lecine concentration of the acido soluble phase) of the cerebral and cerebellar proteins, changes during the day synchronally. They show a maximum at 15.00 h and a minimum at 0.300 h. At all stages studied, these values are significantly lower in the hyothyroid animals than in normal ones.
