OBJECTIVE: Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), the experience of a pleasant tingling on the neck and scalp, is known to be triggered by a characteristic type of videos (ASMR videos). The present study examines whether this experience is indeed specific to these ASMR videos, or whether it can also be triggered by other types of videos, e.g. walking tour videos. A further goal was to investigate differences between ASMR-responders and ASMR-non-responders regarding their ASMR sensation and to compare ASMR and walking tour videos with regard to the elicitation of positive affect and state relaxation...

Culturing mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) in human platelet lysate (HPL) supplemented media can enhance their osteogenic differentiation potential. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that conditioned media (CM) derived from HPL-cultured MSC also have pro-osteogenic effects. Pooled CM was prepared from HPL-cultured human bone marrow MSC (BMSC) of multiple donors and applied on BMSC of different donors (than those used for CM preparation), with or without additional supplementation [HPL, fetal bovine serum (FBS)] and osteogenic stimulation...

High blood pressure (HBP) is common in diabetic patients and significantly increases complications of diabetes and cardiovascular risk. It is therefore particularly important to routinely screen and treat HBP in these patients. Blood pressure targets in this population (<130/80mmHg) should be adapted to age and comorbidities. The therapeutic strategy has expanded beyond renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors in the diabetic population, with treatments which decrease cardiovascular and renal risk, such as SGLT2 inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and soon finerenone...

Schizosaccharomyces japonicus is a dimorphic yeast, transiting between unicellular and hyphal growth. The glycoproteins of fission yeast contain, in addition to mannose (Man), a large number of galactose (Gal) residues. Previously, we reported that the cell-surface O-glycans of S. japonicus comprise mainly tri-saccharides (Gal-Man-Man) as a main component, in contrast to the tetra-saccharides observed in other Schizosaccharomyces species. Here we have investigated the function of cell-surface Gal residues in S...

Background: The fathead minnow ( Pimephales promelas ) is a model species for toxicological research. A high-quality genome reference sequence is available, and genomic methods are increasingly used in toxicological studies of the species. However, phylogenetic relationships within the genus remain incompletely known and little population-genomic data are available for fathead minnow despite the potential effects of genetic background on toxicological responses. On the other hand, a wealth of extant samples is stored in museum collections that in principle allow fine-scale analysis of contemporary and historical genetic variation...

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of the bile ducts and represents the second most common hepatic cancer after hepatocellular carcinoma; it is sub-classified as intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (eCCA), the latter comprising both perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA or Klatskin tumor), and distal cholangiocarcinoma (dCCA). The global incidence of CCA has increased worldwide in recent decades. Chronic inflammation of biliary epithelium and bile stasis represent the main risk factors shared by all CCA sub-types...

The delay of ovarian aging and the fertility preservation of cancer patients are the eternal themes in the field of reproductive medicine. Acting as the pacemaker of female physiological aging, ovary is also considered as the principle player of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and etc. However, its aging mechanism and preventive measures are still unclear. Some researchers attempt to activate endogenous ovarian female germline stem cells (FGSCs) to restore ovarian function, as the most promising approach...

Triterpenes and phytosterols enriched herbal formulations are known for glucose regulation and lipid metabolism. In this study, triterpenes and phytosterols from Moringa oleifera stem bark have been tested for their role in adipocyte differentiation. Chromatographic analysis revealed a wide range of phenolics, highlighting the presence of flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin, and rutin), terpenoids (lupeol), and phytosterol (stigmasterol, β-sitosterol). Lupeol and β-sitosterol reduced cell viability in a dose-dependent manner showcasing increased G1 phase cell accumulation while reducing other cell cycle phases (S and G2 /M) and significant lowering of intracellular lipid accumulation...
