Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder that results in multiple bouts of intermittent hypoxia. OSA has many neurological and systemic comorbidities, including dysphagia, or disordered swallow, and discoordination with breathing. However, the mechanism in which chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) causes dysphagia is unknown. Recently, we showed the postinspiratory complex (PiCo) acts as an interface between the swallow pattern generator (SPG) and the inspiratory rhythm generator, the preBötzinger complex, to regulate proper swallow-breathing coordination (Huff et al...

Understanding the relationships between structure and properties of aluminosilicate glasses is of interest in magmatic studies as well as for glass applications as mechanical or optical components. Glass properties may be tailored by the incorporation of additional elements, and here we studied the effect of phosphate incorporation on refractive index and the degree of ionic bonding in aluminosilicate glasses. The studied glasses in the system SiO2 -Al2 O3 -Na2 O-P2 O5 had a metaluminous composition (Al:Na = 1) with the content of SiO2 ranging from 50 to 70 mol% and of P2 O5 from 0 to 7...

BACKGROUND: Little is known about mental health among Medicare beneficiaries with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias (ADRD) who reside in assisted living (AL) communities. The COVID-19 pandemic may have curtailed ambulatory care access for these residents, but telehealth may have expanded it. We examined in-person and telehealth use of ambulatory mental health visits among AL residents with ADRD, pre and during the COVID pandemic, focusing on race/ethnicity and Medicare/Medicaid dual status...

Ca-substituted Ba1- x Ca x Mg2 Al6 Si9 O30 ceramics were prepared to explore the relationships among their crystal structural parameters, phase compositions, dielectric properties, and coefficients of thermal expansion and applications in C-band antenna. The maximum solubility of Ba1- x Ca x Mg2 Al6 Si9 O30 was located at x = 0.25, and Ba1- x Ca x Mg2 Al6 Si9 O30 ceramics (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) crystallized in the space group P 6/ mcc . In Ba1- x Ca x Mg2 Al6 Si9 O30 single-phase ceramics, εr was dominated by ionic polarizability and "rattling effects" of Ba2+ and Al(2)3+ ; Q × f was controlled by the roundness of [Si4 Al2 O18 ] inner rings and total lattice energy; and τf was affected by the bond valence of Si/Al(1)-O(1)...

Biallelic pathogenic variations in the zinc finger protein 142 (ZNF142) gene are associated with neurodevelopmental disorder with impaired speech and hyperkinetic movements (NEDISHM). This disorder is characterized by developmental delay, intellectual disability, speech delay, and movement disorders such as dystonia, tremor, ataxia, and chorea. Here, we report a patient who exhibited common neurological features and rarely reported brain MRI findings. Exome sequencing identified a novel biallelic variant in ZNF142 (c...

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death. FGFR4 has been implicated in HCC progression, making it a promising therapeutic target. We introduce an approach for identifying novel FGFR4 inhibitors by sequentially adding fragments to a common warhead unit. This strategy resulted in the discovery of a potent inhibitor, 4c , with an IC50 of 33 nM and high selectivity among members of the FGFR family. Although further optimisation is required, our approach demonstrated the potential for discovering potent FGFR4 inhibitors for HCC treatment, and provides a useful method for obtaining hit compounds from small fragments...

The objective of this study was to analyze primary results of a systematic review on ergonomics, musculoskeletal disorders, treatment, and return to work in blue-collar workers to form a new conceptual framework applicable to intervention programs in this area. This study was based on the available scientific evidence we identified. Descriptive data and their trending topics areas were used to form the conceptual framework...

OBJECTIVE: Return to work and permanence in employment of women who survive breast cancer are topics that become important as incidence and survival rates increase. Self-efficacy as a modifiable element is of special interest in this process. The objective of this study is to measure the level of self-efficacy in female breast cancer survivors, according to sociodemographic, work and treatment characteristics and their relationship with return to work. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study, based on a survey of breast cancer patients about their demographic and work characteristics, the return to work process, permanence in the same job and the level of work self-efficacy...

Food environments, or interfaces between consumers and their food systems, are a useful lens for assessing global dietary change. Growing inclusivity of nature-dependent societies in lower-and middle-income countries is driving recent developments in food environment frameworks. Downs et al. (2020) propose a food environment typology that includes: wild, cultivated, informal and formal market environments, where wild and cultivated are "natural food environments." Drawing from transdisciplinary perspectives, this paper argues that wild and cultivated food environments are not dichotomous, but rather exist across diverse landscapes under varying levels of human management and alteration...

We here describe the location of anisakid third stage larvae in Atlantic herring Clupea harengus L. caught in the North Sea in August 2023. We further demonstrate how industrial processing (mechanical gutting, removal of entrails, head, tail, hypaxial anterior musculature and vertebral column) reduces the overall infection and worm load in the musculature. The isolated anisakid larvae were identified as Anisakis simplex sensu stricto by a combination of morphometrics and molecular methods (PCR of rDNA and mtDNA, sequencing, BLAST analysis)...

Hypoparathyroidism is the most common endocrinological feature in children with Sanjad-Sakati syndrome. Treatment includes active vitamin D and calcium supplementation. Here, we report a case of a newborn with Sanjad-Sakati syndrome who had severe hypocalcemia since birth who responded to PTH subcutaneous pump infusion. The child was born at 35 weeks with hypocalcemia since the first day of life. The standard medical treatment proved ineffective for the newborn, necessitating the administration of unusually high doses of oral and IV calcium and vitamin D analogue for a 2 months...

Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) are synthetic materials nanostructured in two dimensions that present positively charged layers with interspersed anions for charge and structure balancing. Being recognized as a promising material for various applications, a complete exploration of its possible attractive properties and its synthesis process is essential. However, drying, a necessary step in the process, is still little studied. This work aimed to produce MgAl-CO3 /LDH microspheres and calculate the volumetric heat coefficient in spray drying, evaluating the drying air inlet temperature and the concentration of the feed paste in the dryer...

Gut microbiota interacts with host epithelial cells and regulates many physiological functions such as genetics, epigenetics, metabolism of nutrients, and immune functions. Dietary factors may also be involved in the etiology of colorectal cancer (CRC), especially when an unhealthy diet is consumed with excess calorie intake and bad practices like smoking or consuming a great deal of alcohol. Bacteria including Fusobacterium nucleatum, Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF), and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) actively participate in the carcinogenesis of CRC...

BACKGROUND: Post-operative infections are a common cause of morbidity following major surgery. Little is understood about how major surgery perturbs immune function leading to heightened risk of subsequent infection. Through analysis of paired blood samples obtained immediately before and 24 h following surgery, we evaluated changes in circulating immune cell phenotype and function across the first 24 h, to identify early immune changes associated with subsequent infection. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study of adult patients undergoing major elective gastrointestinal, gynecological, or maxillofacial surgery requiring planned admission to the post-anesthetic care unit...
