It is estimated that one-third of the people with refractory epilepsy suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). In a patient presenting with OSA symptoms and epilepsy, removing a portion of the soft palate (uvulopalatoplasty) can be considered the treatment of choice for eliminating the OSA and decreasing the seizures. Here, we report the results of our surgical approach by which the patient's problems completely resolved, and we observed no symptoms of OSA or epilepsy after the surgery. After 10 years of follow-up, the patient is seizure-free and does not need any antiepileptic drugs...

Combined deficiency of factors V and VIII (F5F8D) is a bleeding disorder caused by mutations in LMAN1 or MCFD2. LMAN1 encodes ERGIC-53, a cargo receptor with an L-type lectin domain, and MCFD2 is a EF-hand-containing protein. We prepared a biotinylated, soluble form of ERGIC-53, which we labeled with R-phycoerythrin conjugated streptavidin. By flow cytometry, sERGIC-53-SA bound to HeLaS3 cells in the presence of calcium but only after preincubation with MCFD2. Treating the cells with endo H or incubating them with high mannose-type oligosaccharides, especially M(8B), abrogated sERGIC-53-SA binding...

The authors have observed a number of cases of ectopic ossification in patients in a rehabilitation centre for paraplegia. They review the clinical features of the condition, its frequency and its localization. The time of onset and the spontaneous evolution of the condition was found to be variable. Operations were performed on 35 joints - 16 hips, 13 knees and 6 elbows. The results are described. The authors emphasize the value of serial scintigrams before surgery to assess the maturation of ossification...
