INTRODUCTION: Systemic hypertension (HTN) is a common risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In Mexico, HTN prevalence has increased over time and is currently 31%. Nonetheless, information about the country's HTN incidence and its associated risk factors is scarce. Understanding this condition is a priority for identifying the scope of primary prevention. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of traditional and non-traditional risk factors on the incidence of HTN in a cohort of healthy Mexico City residents under biannual follow-up for 10 years...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A high dietary sodium intake and a low potassium intake are associated with adverse cardiovascular health. Data on these nutrients consumption in Mexico is limited. The aim of this study was to assess sodium and potassium intake by 24 h urinary excretion in a clinically healthy Mexican population. We additionally explored their association with blood pressure. METHODS: 711 clinically healthy participants aged 20-50 years old recruited in the Tlalpan 2020 cohort from September 2014-December 2015, were included in this cross-sectional analysis...

BACKGROUND: The inflammatory process in aortic valvular stenosis persists after surgery to replace the valve in almost half of the patients. No association has been found to its persistence. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the inflammatory response in patients with aortic stenosis through the determination of several biomarkers in plasma measured before and after the valvular replacement and to seek an association with the type of prosthesis used. METHODS: This is an observational study with a follow up of 6 months in subjects with severe aortic stenosis...

Hemodialysis (HD) is usually performed with the gradually decreasing ultrafiltration rate (UFR) profile (dUFR). The aim of the present study was to compare the hemodynamic response to HD with the dUFR to that of HD with the gradually increasing UFR profile (iUFR). The study population included 10 patients (three women, mean age: 28 ± 8 years) undergoing maintenance HD who had reached dry weight without taking antihypertensive medications. Each patient received (in random order) one HD session with the dUFR and another with the iUFR (both with 3 h total UFR = 2200 mL)...

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) should be considered a clinical entity when its different symptoms share a common etiology: obesity/insulin resistance as a result of a multi-organ dysfunction. The main interest in treating MetS as a clinical entity is that the addition of its components drastically increases the risk of atherosclerosis. In MetS, the adipose tissue plays a central role along with an unbalanced gut microbiome, which has become relevant in recent years. Once visceral adipose tissue (VAT) increases, dyslipidemia and endothelial dysfunction follow as additive risk factors...

BACKGROUND: Among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), 80%-90% present at least one conventional risk factor. On the other hand, lipid profile modification after a cardiovascular event related to acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has been recognized. The prevalence of conventional risk factors and the lipid profile at the time of admission in patients with ACS and significant CAD (stenosis ≥50%) determined through coronary angiography is not well described. METHODS: We studied 3,447 patients with a diagnosis of ACS and significant CAD with stenosis ≥50%, as shown o n angiography...

We aim for the presence IMH using cMRI in patients who presented AMI and did not undergo PPCI or thrombolysis. Cardiac magnetic resonance has proven to be a highly sensitive method for detect its presence in the ischemic damaged tissue. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Children born with a left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) can present with symptoms of left ventricular (LV) failure while ejection fraction (EF) is normal. A more sensitive parameter of systolic function might be obtained with speckle tracking echocardiography, which describes ventricular longitudinal deformation in strain values. It is presumed that despite a normal or only slight decrease in ejection fraction, patients with a LVOTO demonstrate aberrations in the longitudinal deformation of the left ventricle...

Potentially fatal cardiac rupture is a complication of myocardial infarction (MI), which can appear in the first hours of the acute event and during the course of the first week. The intramyocardial dissecting hematoma might appear as a component of the rupture during the evolution process. The description of the myocardium as a helical muscular band facilitates the explanation of the fiber dissection. With echocardiography, it is possible to diagnose intramyocardial dissecting hematomas (IDH), determine its location, progression, potential complications, and in some cases its reabsorption...

Coronary artery aneurysms are a relatively infrequent finding with an incidence of 1% to 2% per year. Its cause can be atherosclerosis, congenital or due to other causes less common. Its initial manifestation can be myocardial infarction and sudden death as a result of rupture or distal embolization. The large coronary aneurysms, non-atherosclerotic, located in the common part of the left main coronary artery are exceptional. The diagnostic method of choice is the coronary angiography; however, non-invasive techniques such as transthoracic including tridimensional mode and transesophageal echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography may have an important role in the detection and follow-up of these anomalies...

Heart failure is one of the most prevalent diseases in industrialized countries. Up to 30% of the patients with advanced heart failure present disturbances in intra-ventricular conduction, and this produce asynchrony of ventricular contractility, leading to further deterioration in heart function. Cardiac resynchronization (TRC) is an increasingly important therapeutic option for a subgroup of patients with heart failure. Several methods have been show to be useful in study the mechanical asynchrony. However, there are discrepancies between the results of the different methods...

This report highlights the immediate and long-term follow-up results of this procedure in an unselected cohort of patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis from a single center. PMC with Inoue balloon was performed in 70 patients in a 2-year period (1993-1994). Age of patients ranged from 18 to 67 years (mean 38 +/- 11). Subepicardial aneurysms (SEA) are an infrequent and serious form of subacute cardiac rupture complicating myocardial infarction. An early diagnosis and surgical repair may be life saving. SEA comprise an abrupt interruption of the myocardium, with a narrow neck and thin wall containing only the epicardium. It may progress to fatal cardiorrhexis. We describe the echocardiographic evolution of this type of cardiac rupture and the contribution of contrast-enhanced echocardiography. A possible pathophysiological mechanism is proposed...
