INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to evaluate the mid-term migration pattern of a femoral short stem. METHODS: Implant migration of 73 femoral short-stems was assessed by Ein-Bild-Roentgen-Analysis Femoral-Component-Analysis (EBRA-FCA) 5 years after surgery. Migration pattern of the whole group was analysed and compared to the migration pattern of implants "at risk" with a subsidence of more than 1.5 mm 2 years postoperative. RESULTS: Mean axial subsidence was 1...

Candida tropicalis is an opportunistic fungal pathogen responsible for mucosal and systemic infections. The cell wall is the initial contact point between a fungal cell and the host immune system, and mannoproteins are important components that play key roles when interacting with host cells. In C. albicans, mannans are modified by mannosyl-phosphate moieties, named phosphomannans, which can work as molecular scaffolds to synthesize β1,2-mannooligosaccharides, and MNN4 is a positive regulator of the phosphomannosylation pathway...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Mucinous metaplasia of the endometrium occurs as a spectrum of epithelial alterations ranging from the formation of simple, tubular glands to architecturally complex glandular proliferation with intraglandular papillary projection and cellular tufts. Endometrial mucinous metaplasia often presents a diagnostic challenge in endometrial curettage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the clinicopathological characteristics and the mutation status for V-Ki-ras2 Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS) of 11 cases of endometrial mucinous metaplasia...

INTRODUCTION: Maternal urinary levels of dialkyl phosphate (DAP) metabolites of organophosphate pesticides (OP) during pregnancy are associated with adverse outcomes in the offspring. Between 2012 and 2014, eighteen active OP ingredients were restricted or banned in Israel for agricultural use. AIM: We aimed to study trends of urinary DAP metabolites among pregnant women and their offspring in the era of the new regulations. METHODS: Pregnant women were recruited at 11-18 weeks of gestation and provided spot urine samples (n = 273)...

Despite the widespread acceptance of rotary blood pump (RBP) in clinical use over the past decades, the diminished flow pulsatility generated by a fixed speed RBP has been regarded as a potential factor that may lead to adverse events such as vasculature stiffening and hemorrhagic strokes. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of generating physiological pulse pressure in the pulmonary circulation by modulating the speed of a right ventricular assist device (RVAD) in a mock circulation loop. A rectangular pulse profile with predetermined pulse width has been implemented as the pump speed pattern with two different phase shifts (0% and 50%) with respect to the ventricular contraction...

PURPOSE: Hypoxic regions of tumors are less sensitive to radio- and chemotherapy, leading to poor prognosis of patients. One option to overcome the radioresistance is the irradiation of hypoxic tumors with high linear energy transfer (LET) α- or Auger electronemitters assuming their radiotoxicity would be less dependent on the cellular oxygenation status. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine whether irradiation with the intracellularly distributed Auger electron/γ-emitter99m Tc using the tracer [99m Tc]TcHMPAO is a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of hypoxic tumor cells...

AIM: To investigate the influence of scan time point and volume of intravenous contrast material in 18F-FDG PET/CT on maximum and mean standardized uptake values (SUVmax /mean ) in bloodpool and liver. METHODS: In 120 patients scheduled for routine whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT the maximum and mean standardized uptake values (SUVmax /SUVmean ) in the liver and blood pool were measured after varying scan time-point (delay 0 s-140 s post injectionem) and volume of contrast material (CM; 0 ml, 80 ml, 100 ml of 300 mg/ml of Iodine)...

Inflammasome activation is critical for host defenses against various microbial infections. Activation of the NLRC4 inflammasome requires detection of flagellin or type III secretion system (T3SS) components by NLR family apoptosis inhibitory proteins (NAIPs); yet how this pathway is regulated is unknown. Here, we found that interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF8) is required for optimal activation of the NLRC4 inflammasome in bone-marrow-derived macrophages infected with Salmonella Typhimurium, Burkholderia thailandensis, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa but is dispensable for activation of the canonical and non-canonical NLRP3, AIM2, and Pyrin inflammasomes...
