Mechanically induced chromosome reorganization plays important roles in transcriptional regulation. However, the interplay between chromosome reorganization and transcription activities is complicated, such that it is difficult to decipher the regulatory effects of intranuclear geometrical cues. Here, we simplify the system by introducing DNA, packaging proteins (i.e., histone and protamine), and transcription factor NF-κB into a well-defined fluidic chip with changing spatical confinement ranging from 100 to 500 nm...

This study aimed to investigate the short and long-term effects of Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) therapy on spasticity and motor performance in children with hemiparetic cerebral palsy. We recruited 26 patient participants from among children undergoing conventional physiotherapy in a private rehabilitation center. We randomly assigned 22 participants to equally sized treatment (n = 11) and control (n = 11) groups. We evaluated the participants at the beginning of the study with the Gross Motor Function Measure-88, LEGSys™ Spatio-Temporal Gait Analyzer, SportKAT550™ Portable Computerized Kinesthetic Balance Device and the Modified Ashworth Scale...

Natural populations are not homogenous systems but sets of individuals that occupy subsets of the species' niche. This phenomenon is known as individual specialization. Recently, several studies found evidence of individual specialization in animal diets. Diet is a critical dimension of a species' niche that affects several other dimensions, including space use, which has been poorly studied under the light of individual specialization. In the present study, which harnesses the framework of the movement ecology paradigm and uses yellow-shouldered bats (Sturnira lilium) as a model, we ask how food preferences lead individual bats of the same population to forage mainly in different locations and habitats...

The aim of this study was to analyze patients by deep sequencing the human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) long terminal repeat (LTR) region in order to determine if minor and/or major mutations in this promoter region might be associated with tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP)/human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1-associated myelopathy (HAM) outcome or proviral load or HTLV-1 expression. This study is a cross-sectional analyze of 29 HTLV-1-infected patients with TSP/HAM or asymptomatic carriers...

Landsat-TM (Theme Mapper) and EOS (Earth Observing System)-MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrora-diometer) Terra/Aqua images were used to monitor the macro-algae (Ulva prolifera) bloom since 2007 at the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. At the turbid waters of Northern Jiangsu Shoal, there is strong spectral mixing behavior, and satellite images with finer spatical resolution are more effective in detection of macro-algae patches. Macro-algae patches were detected by the Landsat images for the first time at the Sheyang estuary where is dominated by very turbid waters...

H Bertrand, V Forin
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to review the literature to indications of botulinum toxin type A in children. METHOD: We review the international literature from 1990 to 2002 by querying the Pubmed database with the keywords "children" and "botulinum toxin". RESULTS: Two hundred and forty-eight articles are retrieved. We selected the most relevant 64 articles among them. Several questions remain pending: which optimal dose, which periodicity for injections, which optimal age to prolong efficiency? The main criteria to estimate efficiency is functional ability improvement...

Sixteen male Fischer-344N rats were trained on a eight-arm radial maze task for food reinforcement. The effects of various doses of baclofen (1.25 or 2.50 mg/kg) and scopolamine (0.188, 0.375, and 0.750 mg/kg) were determined alone and in combination. Relative to vehicle controls, baclofen alone did not affect performance in the radial arm maze (number correct in the first eight responses, total errors) or the time required to complete the maze. Scopolamine alone decreased the number of correct responses in the first eight arm choices, while increasing both the number of errors and the time necessary to complete the maze...

To assess the bronchospastic component in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease, measurement of vital capacity and forced expiratory volume (FEV) before and after inhalation of a beta-agonist is a widely used procedure. In a minority of patients this simple inhalation test yields a negative result, suggesting the possibility of unresponsive airways. The purpose of this study was to explore th significance of a negative test result by examining pulmonary mechanics in 17 patients before and after inhalation...
