Aim The present study aims to look at the long-term clinical and radiological outcomes of surgically treated talus fractures. We have compared the outcomes and complications between simple and complex talar fracture patterns. Additionally, patients' ability to return to activity following surgical treatment of these fractures was also analysed. Materials and methods Retrospective analysis of surgically treated talus fractures at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research from 2012 to 2015. The fractures were classified as neck and body fractures...

Certain laboratory abnormalities correlate with subvariants of systemic mastocytosis (SM) and are often prognostically relevant. To assess the diagnostic and prognostic value of individual serum chemistry parameters in SM, 2607 patients enrolled within the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM) and 575 patients enrolled within the German Registry on Eosinophils and Mast Cells (GREM) were analyzed. For screening and diagnosis of SM, tryptase was identified as the most specific serum parameter. For differentiation between indolent and advanced SM (AdvSM), the following serum parameters were most relevant: tryptase, alkaline phosphatase (AP), ß2-microglobulin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), albumin, vitamin B12, and C-reactive protein (P<0...

Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP Panel) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety for the users of the feed additive consisting of ferric tyrosine chelate (TYFER™) when used as a zootechnical additive for chickens, turkeys and minor poultry species for fattening or reared for laying/breeding. The European Commission request follows a previous opinion of the FEEDAP Panel. In that opinion, the Panel identified several risks for the users of the additive; it was listed that it posed a risk to users by inhalation, should be considered as an irritant to skin, eyes and mucous membranes, and also that, due to its nickel content, should be considered as a dermal and respiratory sensitiser...

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative technology across various fields, and its applications in the medical domain, particularly in ophthalmology, has gained significant attention. The vast amount of high-resolution image data, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) images, has been a driving force behind AI growth in this field. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes for blindness in the world, affecting approximately 196 million people worldwide in 2020...

Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of l-isoleucine produced by fermentation with Corynebacterium glutamicum CGMCC 20437 as a nutritional feed additive for use in feed and in water for drinking for all animal species. The production strain is non-genetically modified, qualifies for the QPS approach to safety assessment when used for production purposes, is susceptible to the relevant antibiotics and contains no antimicrobial resistance genes of concern...

Humans are chronically exposed to furan, a potent liver toxicant and carcinogen that occurs in a variety of heat-processed foods. Assessment of human exposure based on the furan content in foods is, however, subject to some uncertainty due to the high volatility of furan. Biomarker monitoring is thus considered an alternative or complementary approach to furan exposure assessment. Previous work suggested that urinary furan metabolites derived from the reaction of cis-2-butene-1,4-dial (BDA), the reactive intermediate of furan, with glutathione (GSH) or amino acids may serve as potential biomarkers of furan exposure...

Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas are lethal tumors with a prognosis generally less than 1 year. Few cases of survivors of 5 years or more have been reported. This case report highlights the journey of a 9.5-year survivor who underwent 3 rounds of focal radiotherapy; she experienced 6 years of progression-free survival following the first round but ultimately succumbed to her disease. An autopsy revealed a favorable IDH1 mutation and the absence of H3K27M. This case reiterates the importance of extensive molecular analyses in diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas and explores the potential benefit of re-irradiation in patients with positive responses and long periods of remission...

BACKGROUND: Anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and shoulder hemiarthroplasty (HA) have both been shown to have good outcomes in patients with osteoarthritis of the glenohumeral joint. However, evidence comparing perioperative complications between these procedures in this population is heterogeneous. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was queried between the years 2012 and 2021 (10 years in total) for records of patients who underwent either TSA or HA for osteoarthritis of the glenohumeral joint...

BACKGROUND: Clinical samples are irreplaceable, and their transformation into searchable and reusable digital biobanks is critical for conducting statistically empowered retrospective and integrative research studies. Currently, mainly data-independent acquisition strategies are employed to digitize clinical sample cohorts comprehensively. However, the sensitivity of DIA is limited, which is why selected marker candidates are often additionally measured targeted by parallel reaction monitoring...

We discuss a patient who presented with bilateral VI and VII cranial nerve palsies, symmetric upper and lower limb weakness and areflexia, 2 weeks following an flu-like illness. At presentation, there was no papilloedema, and her visual function was normal. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis and electrophysiology supported the diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). She received intravenous immunoglobulins. She subsequently developed headaches and vision loss. Funduscopy demonstrated severe papilloedema with visual acuity of 6/18 right eye, 6/12 left eye with bitemporal visual field depression...

Cell cycle involves the sequential and reiterative progression of important events leading to cell division. Progression through a specific phase of the cell cycle is under the control of various factors. Since the cell cycle in multicellular eukaryotes responds to multiple extracellular mitogenic cues, its study in higher forms of life becomes all the more important. One such factor regulating cell cycle progression in plants is sugar signalling. Because the growth of organs depends on both cell growth and proliferation, sugars sensing and signalling are key control points linking sugar perception to regulation of downstream factors which facilitate these key developmental transitions...

Most species of the bone-devouring marine annelid, Osedax, display distinct sexual dimorphism with macroscopic sedentary females rooted in bones and free-living microscopic dwarf males. The paedomorphic male resembles the non-feeding metatrochophore larva in size, presence of eight pairs of chaetae, and a head ciliation potentially representing a residual prototroch. The male development may thus uniquely reiterate and validate the theoretical heterochrony process "progenesis", which suggests that an accelerated sexual maturation and early arrest of somatic growth can lead to a miniaturized and paedomorphic adult...

Pavlovian fear conditioning research suggests that the interaction between the dorsal periaqueductal gray (dPAG) and basolateral amygdala (BLA) acts as a prediction error mechanism in the formation of associative fear memories. However, their roles in responding to naturalistic predatory threats, characterized by less explicit cues and the absence of reiterative trial-and-error learning events, remain unexplored. In this study, we conducted single-unit recordings in rats during an 'approach food-avoid predator' task, focusing on the responsiveness of dPAG and BLA neurons to a looming robot predator...
