The aim of this study was to determine the role of antithyroglobulin antibody (ATA) serum as a marker of successful I-131 ablation therapy in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients with low serum thyroglobulin (Tg). A retrospective study was conducted on 60 patients (10 males and 50 females). All patients underwent posttotal thyroidectomy and received 2.96 to 3 GBq I-131 ablation. Subjects were divided into two groups with succesful and unsuccessful I-131 ablation therapies. The data of age, gender, histopathologic type, tumor size, and metastasis were collected...

RATIONALE: The early detection of recurrent differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) cells in postsurgery DTC patients relies on the sensitivity of measuring both the level of thyroglobulin (Tg) and 131-iodine distribution on a whole-body scan (WBS). Recent studies have defined patients who subsequently have no evidence of disease as those who have a stimulated Tg level <1 ng/mL with no other radiological or clinical evidence of disease. PATIENT CONCERNS: A woman patient with solid variant papillary thyroid carcinoma (SVPTC) had undergone twice thyroidectomy with lymph node dissection and radioactive therapy...

Internalizing disorders co-occur with alcohol use disorder (AUD) at a rate that exceeds chance and compromise conventional AUD treatment. The "vicious cycle" model of comorbidity specifies drinking to cope (DTC) as a link between these disorders that, when not directly addressed, undermines the effectiveness of conventional treatments. Interventions based on this model have proven successful but there is no direct evidence for how and to what extent DTC contributes to the maintenance of comorbidity. In the present study, we used network analysis to depict associations between syndrome-specific groupings of internalizing symptoms, alcohol craving, and drinking behavior, as well as DTC and other extradiagnostic variables specified in the vicious cycle model (e...

Currently, patients with radioiodine refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RAIR-DTC) have limited treatment options. In this study, we aimed to assess the short-term efficacy and safety of apatinib in RAIR-DTC. Ten adult patients were prospectively enrolled to receive oral apatinib (750 mg q.d). The primary endpoints were change in serum thyroglobulin (Tg) concentration, disease control rate (DCR) and objective response rate (ORR) based on RECIST 1.1 criteria. The secondary endpoints included change in glucose metabolism, evaluated by maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax), and safety...

BACKGROUND: Differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTC) account for most of the thyroid cancers. The emergence of DTC may be affected by various predisposing genetic alterations and environmental factors The aim of this study was to investigate the role of VEGF C936T and IL-8 A251T gene polymorphisms in the pathogenesis and metastasis of differentiated thyroid cancer. METHODS: The study consisted of 101 patients DTC patients and 109 healthy controls. The parameters of the stage of cancer of the DTC patients at the time of diagnosis (TNM) were recorded...

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic I-123 scans have been shown to underestimate the disease burden in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) when compared to I-131 post treatment scans, especially in children and patients who have had prior Radioiodine (RAI) therapy and/or distant metastasis.I-124 PET/CT has been shown to be highly effective in imaging DTC related metastatic disease. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating the sensitivity and specificity of I-124 PET/CT in identifying lesions amenable to RAI therapy as confirmed by I-131 post-treatment scanning...

Previous studies exploring the effects of attention-prioritization on cognitively healthy older adults' gait and cognitive dual task (DT) performance have shown DT cost in gait outcomes but inconsistent effects on cognitive performance, which may reflect task difficulty (the cognitive load). This study aimed to identify whether changing the cognitive load during a walking and counting DT improved the challenge/sensitivity of the cognitive task to observe prioritization effects on concurrent gait and cognitive performance outcomes...

Thyroglobulin autoantibodies (TgAb) are estimated to detect potential interferences in thyroglobulin (Tg) immunoassays and also for the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease. A user friendly and robust in-house solid-phase radioassay was standardized and parameters like sensitivity, reproducibility and stability were assessed. Further, it was validated and evaluated for the detection of autoantibodies in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients. Totally 301 samples received in our laboratory for routine serum Tg estimation were studied...

The management of early stage differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) with low risk of recurrence has been the subject of much interest and investigation in the recent years. Locally advanced DTC and patients with a high risk of recurrent disease however needs further investigation. This short review will look at what constitutes high risk thyroid cancer, the definition of radioiodine refractory disease, the current management and areas of debate within this clinical setting.

OBJECTIVE: High sensitive thyroglobulin assays (hsTg) has decreased the need for stimulated Tg measurements in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). However, multiple assays analyzing the same samples may report different values. Accordingly, appropriate assay-specific cut-off levels should be selected in representative patients series. Here we evaluate the role of a new hsTg assay in low to intermediate risk DTC patients and select appropriate assay-specific clinical cut-off limits...

AIMS: When a fixed activity of radioiodine is given for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), absorbed doses of radioiodine can vary widely and are not usually measured. Leeds Cancer Centre has routinely used a form of lesion-specific dosimetry for radioiodine patients. This study investigated if the results of dosimetry influenced treatment decisions for patients with advanced DTC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Since 2005, patients with regionally advanced/metastatic DTC, who underwent radioiodine treatment together with dosimetry, were included in this study...

PURPOSE: Molecular characterization of disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) in the bone marrow (BM) of breast cancer (BC) patients has been hindered by their rarity. To enrich for these cells using an antigen-independent methodology, we have evaluated a size-based microfiltration device in combination with several downstream biomarker assays. METHODS: BM aspirates were collected from healthy volunteers or BC patients. Healthy BM was mixed with a specified number of BC cells to calculate recovery and fold enrichment by microfiltration...

This study was performed to systematically assess the prevalence, topography and prognostic impact of disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) in lymph nodes (LN) of patients with primary, regional and distant metastasis-free head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) who underwent resection with elective neck dissection. From the routinely processed resection specimen, we could prospectively analyze a total of 1.137 exactly mapped LNs of 50 pN0-HNSCC patients, classified as tumor free by routine histopathology. Three immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays using antibodies directed against CK5/14, a broad spectrum of CKs (1-8, 10, 14-16, and 19), and CD44v6, respectively, were applied on 4...

This paper presents a nonlinear Direct Torque Control (DTC) strategy with Space Vector Modulation (SVM) for an induction motor. A nonlinear input-output feedback linearization (IOFL) is implemented to achieve a decoupled torque and flux control and the SVM is employed to reduce high torque and flux ripples. Furthermore, the control scheme performance is improved by inserting a super twisting speed controller in the outer loop and a load torque observer to enhance the speed regulation. The combining of dual nonlinear strategies ensures a good dynamic and robustness against parameters variation and disturbance...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Beginning in 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of multikinase inhibitors (MKIs) for medullary thyroid cancers (MTCs), and in 2013 MKIs were approved for metastatic differentiated thyroid cancers (DTCs). However, little is known about the use of chemotherapy in thyroid cancer patients. Thus, the goal of our study was to describe patterns of chemotherapy use, including MKIs, among DTC and MTC patients in the National Cancer Database (NCDB). METHODS: Chemotherapy use, along with other treatment types (surgery and radiation), was assessed between 2004 and 2013...
