Background Radiation damage to the salivary gland is a common complication of radioiodine therapy (RIT) in the patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Purpose To investigate the feasibility of using intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect radiation-induced changes of normal-appearing parotid glands in the patients after RIT for DTC. Material and Methods We prospectively enrolled 20 patients with RIT-induced sialoadenitis and 20 healthy control (HC) participants...

Radioiodine uptake in the thyroid tissue, metastasis of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), and in other tissues, depends on the expression of sodium-iodide symporter (NIS). Vascular permeability, effusions, inflammation, and other mechanisms may also play a role in the accumulation of radioactive iodine. A 63-year-old woman underwent radioiodine therapy, as well as a post-therapy whole-body scan,as she was suspected of having lung metastasis from thyroid carcinoma. The scan not only showed uptake at the lung metastasis but also a faint diffuse bilateral uptake in the posterior thorax...

Direct-to-consumer personal genomic testing (DTC-PGT) results lead some individuals to seek genetic counseling (GC), but little is known about these consumers and why they seek GC services. We analyzed survey data pre- and post-PGT from 1026 23andMe and Pathway Genomics customers. Participants were mostly white (91%), female (60%), and of high socioeconomic status (80% college educated, 43% household income of ≥$100,000). After receiving PGT results, 43 participants (4%) made or planned to schedule an appointment with a genetic counselor; 390 (38%) would have used in-person GC had it been available...

OBJECTIVE: Post-operative thyroglobulin (Tg) levels can predict the likelihood of residual cancer, including distant metastases, thereby influencing postsurgical treatment strategies even in patients with low-risk disease. Circulating anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (anti-Tg Abs) interfere with Tg measurement preventing this clinical use. It is not known if the presence of anti-Tg Abs predicts metastatic disease on post-therapy scan in patients with low-risk disease or if they should influence the use or dose of I-131 therapy...

The present study sought to address an issue in the drinking to cope (DTC) motives literature, namely the inconsistent application of treating DTC motives as a single construct and splitting it into DTC-depression and DTC-anxiety motives. Specifically, we aimed to determine if the effects of anxiety and depression on alcohol-related problems are best explained via their associations with DTC with specific affects or via their associations with a more global measure of DTC by testing four distinct models: the effects of anxiety/depression on alcohol-related problems mediated by DTC-anxiety only (Model 1), these effects mediated by DTC-depression only (Model 2), these effects mediated by a combined, global DTC factor (Model 3), and these effects mediated by both DTC-anxiety and DTC-depression (Model 4)...

Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is the most common malignancy of the endocrine system. There has been a significant increase in its incidence over the past two decades attributable mainly to the use of more sensitive diagnostic modalities. Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology is the mainstay of diagnosis of benign disorders and malignancy. However, approximately 20% of lesions cannot be adequately categorized as benign or malignant. In the post-operative setting, monitoring of thyroglobulin (Tg) levels has been employed for the detection of disease recurrence...

CONTEXT: The coexistence of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and thyroid autoimmune disease could represent a better or worse prognosis. This study investigated the prognostic importance of preoperative anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) in DTC patients. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: This retrospective hospital-cohort study enrolled 1,171 consecutive DTC patients with preoperative TgAb data, who underwent total thyroidectomy between January 2006 and December 2011. Clinical parameters studied included demographics, primary tumor characteristics, radioiodine therapy, thyroid function tests, preoperative thyroglobulin (Tg) and TgAb levels, and cancer persistence/recurrence...

To assess the efficacy of radioiodine therapy (RIT) and investigate the prognostic factors for patients with pulmonary metastasis secondary to differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) through a retrospective study. A total of 80 patients with radioactive iodine-131 (I)-avid pulmonary metastasis from DTC treated with I from 2007 to 2014 at our institution entered the study. Treatment response was mainly measured by two parameters: serum thyroglobulin (Tg) levels and post-therapeutic I whole-body scan (WBS). Treatment variables were assessed for statistical significance using the univariate and multivariate analyses...

We explored the characteristics and motivations of people who, having obtained their genetic or genomic data from Direct-To-Consumer genetic testing (DTC-GT) companies, voluntarily decide to share them on the publicly accessible web platform openSNP. The study is the first attempt to describe open data sharing activities undertaken by individuals without institutional oversight. In the paper we provide a detailed overview of the distribution of the demographic characteristics and motivations of people engaged in genetic or genomic open data sharing...

BACKGROUND: Lenvatinib (Lenvima®) and sorafenib (Nexavar®) are the two most recently FDA-approved drugs for treating radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RR-DTC). Both demonstrated superior progression-free survival over placebo in their respective phase III clinical trials. In this study, we compared the cost-effectiveness of the two treatments with placebo from a limited societal perspective. METHODS: A Markov model was developed to estimate the costs and health benefits for treatment of RR-DTC...

Although cancer in general is a strong risk factor for developing venous thromboembolism (VTE), the risk factors for venous thromboembolic events in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) have never been assessed. This is remarkable, as several parts of the treatment comprise a hypercoagulable state that could in subgroups of DTC patients lead to an increased risk of VTE. The aim of this study was to assess which risk factors could cause DTC patients to develop VTE. We performed a nested case-control study, involving cases of DTC patients treated between 1980 and 2014 with confirmed VTE after diagnosis of DTC...

There has been a steady incorporation of powerful new molecular tools into the evaluation and management of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. With an increasing incidence of nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) being diagnosed in children and adolescents, oncogene data are providing insight into the clinical differences between pediatric and adult patients with histologically similar DTC. However, additional investment and efforts are needed to define the genomic landscape for pediatric DTC with the goal of improving preoperative diagnostic accuracy as well as stratifying treatment in an effort to reduce complications of therapy...

BACKGROUND: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has a good prognosis but a remaining risk of recurrence, and life-long follow-up as well as medication with levothyroxine may be necessary. The aim of this study was to clarify how thyroid-related symptoms affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL) 14-17 years after diagnosis, in Swedish DTC patients. METHODS: From the all-encompassing population-based Swedish Cancer Registry, 353 patients diagnosed with DTC during 1995-1998 were identified and invited to answer a study-specific questionnaire and the HRQoL questionnaire SF-36, 14-17 years after their diagnosis...

Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is a rare malignancy and has a very poor prognosis due to its aggressive behavior and resistance to treatment. No effective treatment modalities are currently available. Lenvatinib has shown encouraging results in the patients with radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC); however, lenvatinib monotherapy has a relatively low efficacy against ATC. In this study, we assessed the antitumor effects of a combination of lenvatinib and microtubule inhibitor paclitaxel in ATC cells in vitro and in vivo...

BACKGROUND: Serum thyroglobulin (Tg) is essential to manage differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). However, Tg determination is affected by circulating Tg antibodies (TgAb), and a role of TgAb as surrogate biomarker has been proposed. Here we evaluated the role of TgAb measured before and after radioiodine ablation (RRA) as potential predictors of prognosis. METHODS: Patients treated since 2006 were screened. Cancers with structural relapse were defined as recurrent...

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to compare preoperative ultrasonographical and postoperative histopathological diameters of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) lesions and investigate possible factors that can predict the discordance between two measurements. METHODS: Data of patients with histopathologically confirmed DTC were reviewed retrospectively. Nodules evaluated by preoperative US were matched with histopathologically examined nodules. Incidental tumors and nodules that can not be matched in US and histopathology reports were excluded...

BACKGROUND: The clinical course of patients with lung metastases of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) vary, and cancer-specific survival (CSS) can be associated with tumor burden. This study evaluated the growth kinetics of lung metastases from DTC using serial chest computed tomography for Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors assessment and its prognostic implications. METHODS: Forty-four patients with macronodular lung metastases (≥1 cm) of DTC were included...

OBJECTIVE: Public health preparedness is an ever-evolving area of medicine with the purpose of helping the masses quickly and efficiently. The drive-through clinic (DTC) model allows the distribution of supplies or services while participants remain in their cars. Influenza vaccination is the most common form of DTC and has been utilized successfully in metropolitan areas. METHODS: We hypothesized that combining influenza vaccinations and child passenger seat fittings in a DTC format would be both feasible and desired by the community...

BACKGROUND: More than 90% of all thyroid cancers are differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTC) with a 10 year survival rate greater than 90%. The commonly used risk stratification systems for DTC include: European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), AGES (Age, histologic Grade, Extent of tumor, Size), AMES (Metastasis) and MACIS (Completeness of resection, local Invasion). Other systems are also utilized. Several new factors that may be involved in DTC risk stratification have emerged in recent studies, with other "traditional" factors being challenged...
