DNA paternity testing has recently become more widely available in Japan. The aim of this paper is to examine the issues surrounding (1) the implementing agency, whether the testing is conducted in a commercial direct-to-consumer (DTC) setting or a judicial non-DTC setting, and (2) the implementation conditions and more specifically the legal capacity of the proband (test subject). Literature research in Japanese and English was conducted. Some countries prohibit commercial DNA testing without the consent of the proband or her or his legally authorized representative...

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the elective treatment for cervical relapse from differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) but it is technically challenging, with risk of failure and morbidity. We explored the feasibility and the efficacy of Radioguided Occult Lesion Localization (ROLL) with intratumoral 99mTc radiolabeled human albumin macroaggregates ([99mTc]MAA) injection in this setting. METHODS: Fifteen patients who underwent ROLL by ultrasonography (US)-guided intratumoral injection of [99mTc]MAA between December 2013 and October 2016 for DTC recurrence were considered for this study...

Purpose: DNA demethylating agents have shown clinical effectiveness in hematological and solid tumors. This trial tested the safety, efficacy, and treatment outcomes of decitabine-based chemotherapy or combined with immunotherapy in recurrent ovarian cancer patients. Patients and methods: Fifty-five patients with recurrent ovarian cancer were enrolled and 52 were assessable for clinical response and survival. Patients either received 5-d decitabine treatment, followed by reduced-dose of paclitaxel/carboplatin administration (DTC cohort), or the aforementioned regimen combined with cytokine-induced killer cells therapy (DTC+CIK cohort)...

Aminoglycoside antibiotics are widely used for the treatment of life-threatening bacterial infections, but cause permanent hearing loss in a substantial proportion of treated patients. The sensory hair cells of the inner ear are damaged following entry of these antibiotics via the mechano-electrical transducer (MET) channels located at the tips of the hair cell's stereocilia. d-Tubocurarine (dTC) is a MET channel blocker that reduces the loading of gentamicin-Texas Red (GTTR) into rat cochlear hair cells and protects them from gentamicin treatment...

Invasion of the trachea is observed in ~6% of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), and surgery is accepted as the treatment of choice. However, surgical procedures can be challenging and are associated with various risks. The authors of the present study performed a retrospective study of patients with DTC and tumor invasion of the trachea. Outcomes from patients that received circumferential sleeve resection (CSR) of the trachea followed by anastomosis in the absence of suprahyoid release (n=21; CSR group) and patients that underwent tangential resections [n=103; tangential 'shave' resection (TSR) group) were analyzed...

Abnormal regulation of cell migration and altered rearrangement of the cytoskeleton are fundamental properties of metastatic cells. The first identified metastasis suppressor NM23-H1, which displays nucleoside-diphosphate kinase (NDPK) activity is involved in these processes. NM23-H1 inhibits the migratory and invasive potential of some cancer cells. Correspondingly, numerous invasive cancer cell lines (eg, breast, colon, oral, hepatocellular carcinoma, and melanoma) display low endogenous NM23 levels. In this review, we summarize mechanisms, which are linked to the anti-metastatic activity of NM23...

BACKGROUND: We investigated cervical soft tissue recurrence of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) after thyroidectomy, and these lesions exhibited no evidence that they were lymph nodes (LNs). METHODS: Between January 2012 and April 2016, consecutive 6308 patients underwent thyroid surgery for DTC at our center. Among them, we encountered 21 patients with recurrent cervical soft tissue lesions, none of whom had previously undergone fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB)...

INTRODUCTION: Distant metastasis (DM) is not a frequent event in differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) but has an adverse impact on mortality of patients with DTC. In the current study, we aimed to conduct a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the risk factors for DM in DTCs and for each histological subtype. METHODS: Five electronic databases were searched from inception to December 2016 for relevant articles. Pooled odd ratios and 95% confidence interval were calculated using random-effect model...

Distant metastases from differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) are a rare event, occurring in less than 10% of patients with persistent or recurrent clinical disease. About 50% of these patients do respond to radioiodine (RAI) therapy, either with complete remission or stabilization of the disease on a long term period. Unfortunately, another 50% of these patients are refractory to the treatment with RAI, either from the first appearance of distant metastases or during follow-up. Overall, these patients represent 4-5 new cases/year/million...

Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is the most common endocrine malignancy. It usually has a comparatively benign course. If properly executed, radioiodine therapy can provide an effective treatment of even advanced, metastatic DTC. A major problem in determining the right RAI for a patient with metastatic disease is a comparative lack of evidence. There are no reports on randomized controlled trials in this patient group which can aid us in determining which way to treat which patient. Few non-randomized prospective observational studies have been performed...

K2Cr3As3 is a newly discovered quasi-one-dimensional superconductor with a Tc = 6.1 K and an upper critical field μ0Hc2(0) ~ 40 T three times larger than the Pauli paramagnetic limit μ0Hp that is suggestive of a spin-triplet Cooper pairing. In this paper, we have investigated the effects of hydrostatic pressure on its Tc and μ0Hc2 by measuring the ac magnetic susceptibility χ(T) under magnetic fields at various hydrostatic pressures up to 7.5 GPa. The major findings include: (1) Tc is suppressed gradually to below 2 K at 7...

This article describes the mechanisms underlying electronic interactions between surface passivating ligands and (CdSe)34 semiconductor cluster molecules (SCMs) that facilitate band-gap engineering through the delocalization of hole wave functions without altering their inorganic core. We show here both experimentally and through density functional theory calculations that the expansion of the hole wave function beyond the SCM boundary into the ligand monolayer depends not only on the pre-binding energetic alignment of interfacial orbitals between the SCM and surface passivating ligands but is also strongly influenced by definable ligand structural parameters such as the extent of their π-conjugation [π-delocalization energy; pyrene (Py), anthracene (Anth), naphthalene (Naph), and phenyl (Ph)], binding mode [dithiocarbamate (DTC, -NH-CS2(-)), carboxylate (-COO(-)), and amine (-NH2)], and binding head group [-SH, -SeH, and -TeH]...

INTRODUCTION: Micro(mi)-RNAs are small non-coding RNA molecules that exert post-transcriptional effects on gene expression by binding with cis-regulatory regions in target messenger-(m)RNA. MiR146a has a role in inflammation, and may have a role as a tumour suppressor. The polymorphism rs2910164 in pre-mir146a has been implicated in inflammatory pathologies, including cancers of the breast and thyroid; although evidence for association is conflicting in different populations. We aimed to investigate the association of this variant with these two cancers in an Irish cohort...

BACKGROUND: Recent research suggests that ruminative thinking (specifically problem-focused thoughts) may explain why individuals engage in drinking to cope (DTC) when dealing with depressive symptoms; which in turn leads to increased negative alcohol-related consequences. Cross-cultural studies addressing these phenomena are scarce. OBJECTIVES: The present study cross-culturally tested whether four rumination facets (problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts) uniquely mediate the relationships between depressive symptoms and drinking motives/alcohol outcomes in a multicultural sample of college student drinkers (n=1429) from Spain, Argentina, and the U...

Thyroid nodules represent heterogeneous tumors with distinct molecular signatures. While benign thyroid nodules correspond to poly- or monoclonal tumors, thyroid carcinomas are monoclonal and thus "real" neoplasms. These are caused by somatic mutations that lead to the constitutive activation of specific signaling cascades and determine the corresponding histology and also partly the functional phenotype of the thyroid tumor. Dedifferentiation of thyroid carcinomas is accompanied by the occurrence of additional mutations in the tumors...

There is little information regarding direct-to-consumer (DTC) personal genetic testing (PGT) in non-White racial minorities. Using a web-based survey, we compared the pretest interests and attitudes toward DTC-PGT of racial minority and White DTC-PGT customers of 23andMe and Pathway Genomics using chi-square tests and multinomial regression. Data were available for 1487 participants (1389 White, 44 Black, and 54 Asian). Survey responses were similar across racial groups, although a greater proportion of Blacks compared to Whites reported being "very interested" in genetic information related to traits (91...
