CONTEXT: Intestinal intussuception in an adult is a rare entity that differs in etiology from its pediatric counterpart owing to underlying pathologic lead points in adults, mostly neoplasms. The main clinical presentation in chronic intussuception in adults remains dull abdominal pain, and acute intussuception is uncommon. Computed tomography (CT) remains the diagnostic modality of choice and surgical resection is the optimal treatment. CASE REPORT: We report a case of chronic intussuception in a young adult presenting with severe anemia and chronic abdominal pain in right hypochondrium and lumbar region...

BACKGROUND: Intussuception is an uncommon condition in adults. It is usually secondary to an organic lesion that may be malignant. The most common clinical presentation is as a partial bowel obstruction that requires surgical management. Preoperative diagnosis remains difficult; therefore, this paper presents a case report and a brief review of adult intussusception. CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a 24-year-old female with a 36-h evolution of lower abdominal pain with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and a previous episode 8 days earlier...

The microvascular bed of the stomach of Xenopus laevis and the changes it undergoes when the herbivorous tadpole becomes a carnivorous adult were studied by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts and light microscopy of stained tissue sections. In tadpoles an upper and a lower gastric artery supplied, and upper, middle and lower medial and lateral gastric veins drained the vertically extending stomach. During metamorphosis, the stomach gained a horizontal cranio-caudal extension and vessels accordingly become dorsal and ventral gastric arteries, and anterior, middle and posterior gastric veins, respectively...

UNLABELLED: Intussusception is a curious anatomic condition characterized by the invagination of one segment of the gastrointestinal tract into the lumen of an adjacent segment. Once initiated, additional intestinal telescopes into the distal segment, causing the invaginated intestine to propagate distally within the bowel lumen. The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical manifestation, etiology, and outcome of intussuception at atypical ages. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out on patients aged <6 mo or >2 yr with intussusception...

We used immunofluorescent confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to quantify uterine vascularity and to describe uterine surface morphology during gestation in pregnant females of the lecithotrophic lizard Niveoscincus coventryi. As uterine angiogenesis and epithelial cell morphology are thought to be under progesterone control, we studied the effect of a progesterone receptor antagonist (mifepristone) on uterine and chorioallantoic microvasculature and features of the uterine epithelial surfaces...

Intussusception is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adult patients, but is common in children. In fact, it accounts for an estimated 1% of all cases of bowel obstruction in adults, although adult intussusception of the large intestine is rare. Sigmoidorectal intussusception, however, is a rare variety with few cases reported in the literature. A mucinous adenocarcinoma, a subtype of adenocarcinoma, is characterized by extracellular mucin production and accounts for between 5% and 15% of the neoplasms of the colon and rectum...

Colpocystodefecography (CCD) and dynamic MRI with defecography (MRId) permit an alternation between filling and emptying the hollow organs and the maximum abdominal strain offered by the defecation. The application in imaging of these two principles reveal the masked or underestimated prolapses at the time of the physical examination. Rigorous application of the technique guarantees almost equivalent results from the two examinations. The CCD provides voiding views and improved analysis of the anorectal pathology (intussusceptions, anismus) but involves radiation and a more invasive examination...

BACKGROUND: Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an aggressive type of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that originates from small to medium sized lymphocytes located in the mantle zone of the lymph node. Extra nodal involvement is present in the majority of cases, with a peculiar tendency to invade the gastro-intestinal tract in the form of multiple lymphomatous polyposis. MCL can be accurately diagnosed with the use of the highly specific marker Cyclin D1. Few cases of mantle cell lymphoma presenting with intussuception have been reported...

INTRODUCTION: Adult intussusception is rare and usually associated with carcinoma in 50% of the cases. These have traditionally been managed using an open technique. We herein describe a laparoscopic extended right hemicolectomy in a 62-year-old lady with an intussuception secondary to a transverse colonic tumor. METHODS: The patient presented with 6 weeks of crampy, colicky, abdominal pain. Her CT scan reported intussuception of the proximal large bowel. She underwent an extended laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with primary anastomosis...

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) commonly occurs in the stomach. We would like to report an uncommon presentation of gastric GIST with gastroduodenal intussuception. A patient with known history of gastric GIST at fundus for 10 years presented to the casualty department with recurrent epigastric pain, deranged liver function, and hyperamylasemia. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed intussuception of the gastric GIST into duodenum. Emergency operation with synchronous endoscopic reduction and laparoscopic wedge resection was performed and patient had uneventful recovery...

We review the morphofunctional characteristics of pericytes and report our observations. After a brief historical background, we consider the following aspects of pericytes: A) Origin in embryonic vasculogenesis (mesenchymal stem cells, neurocrest and other possible sources) and in embryonic and postnatal life angiogenesis (pre-existing pericytes, fibroblast/ myofibroblasts and circulating progenitor cells). B) Location in pericytic microvasculature and in the other blood vessels (including transitional cell forms and absence in lymphatic vessels), incidence (differences depending on species, topographical location, and type and stage of vessels) and distribution (specific polarities) in blood vessels...

Small bowel intussusceptions are much less common than the ileocolic type, with jejunoileal intussusceptions being amongst the most rare1. We review the literature on small bowel intussuception, using a case of an 11-year-old girl with a jejunoileal intussusception involving the whole of the small bowel, from the level of the duodenojejunal flexure to the ileocaecal valve, as an illustrative history. The typical CT features of an intussusception and value of CT with regard to identification of complications are highlighted...

Rectal prolapse is a rare complication of intussusception in infants. This complication is most often secondary to a side by side placing defect of the caecum and a long mesenter. Three cases of rectal prolapse of intussuception are reported herein and the pathologic and therapeutic aspects of the intussucseption complicated by rectal prolapse, as well as the particularities of intussusception diagnosis in an African country, are reviewed.

Two-dimensional ultrasound is the principle method for the detection of intussusception. The aim of this study was to establish a pathognominic ultrasound criterion for diagnosing intestinal intussusception to facilitate a proper clinical decision. We have developed a new approach to diagnosing colonic intussuception based on the hypothesis that ultrasound image of the invaginated segment should reveal four border layers. We called this sign tetra-layered sign (TLS). In a prospective manner, all adult patients diagnosed with intussusception using the TLS approach in the period from July 1990 and July 2005 were included in this study...

Rotavirus infection is the cause of severe gastroenteritis of young children worldwide, leading to an estimate of 600,000 deaths a year. Efforts to develop an effective and safe vaccine resulted in licensing in 1998 of a live oral vaccine (RotaShield) that was withdrawn less than 1 year later when reports of cases of intussusception were linked to its application. This led to development of new rotavirus vaccine candidates that are currently in late phase III clinical trials. One of these vaccines, GlaxoSmithKline's Rotarix, was licensed in July 2004 to be used in Mexico...

The role of the health professional in supporting the national passive surveillance system is essential, as the first hint of a potential problem usually originates with the astute clinician who reports a case to the appropriate source. The investigation that resulted in the voluntary withdrawal of rotavirus vaccine was triggered by nine reports to VAERS of intussuception, eight of which had occurred within 1 week of the first dose of this vaccine. Health professionals have access to the most complete information related to adverse events experienced by their patients...
