We present the case of a woman in her 20s with an eight-month history of increasing abdominal distention, dyspnea, and night sweats. The patient believed she was pregnant despite being told at another hospital that the pregnancy tests were negative, and no fetus was seen on an abdominal ultrasound. The patient delayed obtaining follow-up because of a distrust of the healthcare system and presented to our hospital at the behest of her mother. On physical examination, the abdomen was distended with a positive fluid wave, and a large mass was palpated in the abdomen...

Intraabdominal infection by Actinomyces species, although a rare condition, usually occurs after a disruption of the mucosal barrier in a peritoneal organ. This infection is characterized by the development of an extended and persistent inflammatory and fibrotic reaction that can be mistaken for other pathogens or different etiologies, like tumors or inflammatory diseases. It can present as an abscess, a stricturing tissue with multiple adhesions, and/or a fistulization. Early diagnosis, targeted and prolonged antimicrobial therapy, and optimal drainage when indicated, are the key to success...

OBJECTIVES: Laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) and mini-laparoscopic surgery (Mini-LPS) have been performed with comparable results to conventional laparoscopy. However, there are few data on the comparison between them. Our main objective was to compare LESS and Mini-LPS in terms of surgical time, postoperative pain, and hospital stay in patients who underwent hysterectomy for benign pathology. DESIGN: It is a retrospective international multicentric study carried out in 5 centers including 2 Spanish and 3 Italian...

INTRODUCTION: Spinal anesthesia combined with sedation and general anesthesia combined with epidural are two techniques often used for patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy. There is no consensus that one of these techniques is superior regarding the perception of patients towards the quality of postoperative recovery. This observational cross-sectional study aimed to assess the quality of postoperative recovery in women undergoing open abdominal hysterectomy by comparing both anesthetic techniques...

OBJECTIVES: Obesity has been suggested to have a negative influence on procedural outcomes of endometrial cancer laparoscopic treatment. Obesity and other possible risk factors of laparoscopic endometrial cancer treatment has not been precisely described in the literature. The aim of the study is to determine the factors that have the greatest influence on the course of laparoscopic surgery for endometrial cancer, with particular emphasis on the influence of obesity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 75 females who were treated for endometrial cancer by laparoscopic surgery...

We investigated the potential anti-HIV-1 activity of the candidate microbicide 5-hydroxytyrosol (5-HT) both in primary human cervical tissue explants (CTE), established from tissues of women undergoing histerectomy, and in endometrium-associated leukocytes (EAL). CTE were exposed to either the laboratory-adapted HIV-1BaL or to primary viral isolates in the presence or absence of 5-HT or 3TC/lamivudine as control and were then monitored for 12 days in terms of HIV-1 p24 Gag antigen production in culture supernatants...

There is a trend of increasing obesity with age, with a peak in the age group 60-69 years. The distribution of patients according to BMI and stage of the disease there is a downward trend in the obesity with increasing stage. In both groups of patients (with and without obesity), the volume and type of surgery were carried out depending on the type of tumor process (localization) and stage of the disease...

BACKGROUND: Although most postmenopausal women diagnosed with endometrial cancer usually present with vaginal bleeding, when complete cervical stenosis is present, this sign may be missing. In these cases, the patient usually complaints for pelvic or abdominal pain while the transvaginal ultrasonography might reveal the presence of an intrauterine fluid collection in association with a thickened endometrial lining. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 65-year-old patient who presented with association of pelvic pain, enlarged uterine cavity with an underlying hematometra and an irregular, thickened endometrium who was submitted to surgery for total histerectomy, bilateral adnexectomy, pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection...

This qualitative study had as its object the daily-life of women after being submitted to a histerectomy. Following this sense the phenomenological approach was chosen as methodological framework , supported by Martin Heidegger phenomenology. The deponents were twenty five women submitted to a histerectomy at HU/UFJF in 2006. The interpretative understanding, showed, under Hedegger perspective, that women s daily-life after being submitted to histerectomy expresses itself in a movement that goes forward and backward for inauthenticity to an indication of properties and improperties...
