We investigated the potential anti-HIV-1 activity of the candidate microbicide 5-hydroxytyrosol (5-HT) both in primary human cervical tissue explants (CTE), established from tissues of women undergoing histerectomy, and in endometrium-associated leukocytes (EAL). CTE were exposed to either the laboratory-adapted HIV-1BaL or to primary viral isolates in the presence or absence of 5-HT or 3TC/lamivudine as control and were then monitored for 12 days in terms of HIV-1 p24 Gag antigen production in culture supernatants...

An analysis of 329 patients with gynecological cancer, 120 of them were without obesity and 209 of them were with obesity. Only 36.47% of the cases were with normal weight. There is a trend of increasing obesity with age, with a peak in the age group 60-69 years. The distribution of patients according to BMI and stage of the disease there is a downward trend in the obesity with increasing stage. In both groups of patients (with and without obesity), the volume and type of surgery were carried out depending on the type of tumor process (localization) and stage of the disease...

BACKGROUND: Although most postmenopausal women diagnosed with endometrial cancer usually present with vaginal bleeding, when complete cervical stenosis is present, this sign may be missing. In these cases, the patient usually complaints for pelvic or abdominal pain while the transvaginal ultrasonography might reveal the presence of an intrauterine fluid collection in association with a thickened endometrial lining. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 65-year-old patient who presented with association of pelvic pain, enlarged uterine cavity with an underlying hematometra and an irregular, thickened endometrium who was submitted to surgery for total histerectomy, bilateral adnexectomy, pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection...

CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 54-year-old woman who was referred to our department with an umbilical tumor and increasing abdominal girth. The patient had had an umbilical hernia for more than 20 years...

Congenital organ anomalies in surgical patients can be incidentally detected during operation. A pelvis located right kidney was found incidentally in 54 year-old women after total abdominal histerectomy and bilateral salpingoophorectomy. The clinical importance of pelvic kidney detected during the surgery was discussed in this case report.

The authors present a case of a 35 years old female patient with spinocellular carcinoma of the cervix, diagnosed after byopsy and treated with radiotherapy 30 Gray, combined with Cisplatin 50 mg. per square meter, per week, 6 months before radical histerectomy and lymphonodulectomy was performed. The postoperative histology shows only traces of dysplastic epithelia, which proves preoperative therapy effective.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and evolution of the atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance (AGUS) without associated lesions identified on cervical Pap smear. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study concerning 33.923 cervicovaginal smears performed in the Cytopathology Department of the Coimbra University Hospital (H.U.C.) between January 1995 an December 1997. This qualitative study had as its object the daily-life of women after being submitted to a histerectomy. Following this sense the phenomenological approach was chosen as methodological framework , supported by Martin Heidegger phenomenology. The deponents were twenty five women submitted to a histerectomy at HU/UFJF in 2006. The interpretative understanding, showed, under Hedegger perspective, that women s daily-life after being submitted to histerectomy expresses itself in a movement that goes forward and backward for inauthenticity to an indication of properties and improperties...

OBJECTIVES: To compare surgical morbidity and time, as well as anatomical outcomes between vaginal histerectomy and uterine preservation in the treatment of uterine prolapse using a mesh kit (Nazca). METHODS: Randomized controled trial with 31 women with uterine prolapse POP-Q stage 3 or 4 pelvic organ prolapse who underwent vaginal surgery using tipe I polypropilene mesh (Nazca). They were randomized in two groups: group HV: hysterectomy and pelvic reconstruction floor with mesh (n=15); group HP: hysteropexy and pelvic reconstruction floor with mesh (n=16)...

PURPOSE: To compare two propofol infusion techniques in bitches subjected to ovary histerectomy by estimating the efficiency of the propofol target-dose, evaluating the cardiorespiratory and hemogasimetric attributes, and the bispectral scale index (BIS) as well as the recovery period characteristics. METHODS: Twenty anesthetized bitches were divided into two groups of 10 each (G1, G2). Animals of G1 were pre-treated with methotrimeprazine and anesthetized with target-controlled propofol infusion by means of a Harvard infusion pump combined to remifentanil through a syringe pump...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Conization is an excisive technique used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. If conizate margines do not show any pathologic changes (negative findings) it is also the only therapeutic measure which should be applied. In case of conizate margins affected by the disease (positive findings), it is necessary not only to assess various parameters but also to decide on a further therapeutic approach. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of positive findings and its impact on a further optimal therapeutic approach choice...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) for treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). To determine the mid-term outcome of TVT performed during other pelvic floor reconstructive procedures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 100 women with SUI undergoing TVT procedure under spinal anesthesia from January 2000 to November 2002 were studied. 76 women were treated with TVT alone. 24 patients were treated with TVT and pelvic floor reconstruction: we repaired 24 cystoceles grade II-III, 3 rectoceles and 4 concomitant vaginal histerectomies...

OBJECTIVES: Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) occurs mostly in children. Isolated bilateral ovarian involvement presenting with amenorrhea is extremely rare in young adults. CASE: A 24-year-old female presented with secondary amenorrhea. Bilateral adnexal masses were identified on physical examination and abdominal computed tomography (CT). She underwent total abdominal histerectomy and bilateral salpingoophorectomy. Histopathologic evaluation yielded a diagnosis of BL of ovaries...

UNLABELLED: The abdominal histerectomy has been used during several years as a definitive treatment for the high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion of the cervix, because it is associated with a high index cure, with 1% to 15% of relapses as neoplastic lesions in the vaginal stump or isolated lesions. The object of this study is to evaluate the extrafascial abdominal histerectomy as an effective and definitive therapeutitic method for the high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, with an annual colpocythologic follow up...
