OBJECTIVE: Pharmacological agents such as prostaglandins (dinoprostone and misoprostol) are commonly used to reduce the duration of labor and promote vaginal delivery. However, key safety considerations with its use include an increased risk of uterine rupture, tachysystole and hyperstimulation of pregnant women, which could potentially lead to a non-reassuring fetal heart rate and to fetal hypoxemia. The aim of this systematic review was to assess maternal and fetal outcomes between misoprostol group (PGE1) and dinoprostone group (PGE2) STUDY DESIGN: We search on MEDLINE (PubMed), CINHAL (EBSCOhost), EMBASE, Scopus (Ovid), CENTRAL (January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2022)...

In this case control study, long-term gynecological, reproductive and sexual outcomes after uterine artery embolization (UAE) for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) were evaluated. The study was performed in a single referral hospital for PPH in Lausanne from 2003 to 2013. Each woman whose delivery was complicated by PPH and treated by UAE was included, and compared to a control group of women whose delivery was uncomplicated. Cases were matched by maternal age, parity, ethnicity, year and mode of delivery, birth weight and gestational age in a 1-3 ratio...

BACKGROUND: Placenta praevia is the most common cause of antepartum haemorrhage. It is a potentially life threatening condition associated with morbidity and mortality. There is no study on the pattern and management of placenta praevia in Sagamu. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the risk factors, pattern of presentation and management outcome of pregnancies complicated by placenta praevia. DESIGN: This was a five-year retrospective study Setting: Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria...

BACKGROUND: Complete (type 4) placenta praevia is a major cause of haemorrhage in Obstetrics. Uterine packing is an effective but underutilized life-saving intervention in situation of uncontrolled haemorrahage due to major placenta praevia. OBJECTIVES: To reappraise the effectiveness of uterine packing in the management of complete placenta praevia in order to popularize the practice. METHODS: Seven case series of complete placenta praevia were managed with uterine packing in Enugu, Nigeria between January 2, 2012 and February 28, 2013...

Women who are carriers for hemophilia are usually considered as safe carriers. However, they can present hemorragic symptoms associated with low factor VIII or IX levels. During pregancy, factor VIII increases whereas factor IX does not. The peripartum period is at risk of increased bleeding in these women. Here are presented reports of clinical data concerning two hemophilia carriers with low factor VIII or IX (30-40%) during the peripartum period. They received remifentanil and ketamine for labor pain management because of contraindication of epidural and spinal analgesia...

We report an uncommon case of a 38-years-old pregnant woman affected by HHT (Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia; Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome) who underwent to a caesarean section (CS) without any complication. The patient at 36th weeks+1 day pregnancy referred to the Emergency Obstetric Unit due to a intercostals pain on left side. On third day after admission the woman started travailing and physicians decided to perform the CS. Considering that no AVMs was found at MRI, a continuous spinal anaesthesia was planned...

BACKGROUND: Neonatal abdominal ultrasound is usually performed in Nigeria to investigate neonatal symptoms rather than as a follow up to evaluate fetal abnormalities which were detected on prenatal ultrasound. The role of routine obstetric ultrasonography in the monitoring of pregnancy and identification of fetal malformations has partly contributed to lowering of fetal mortality rates. In Nigeria which has a high maternal and fetal mortality rate, many pregnant women do not have ante-natal care and not infrequently, women also deliver their babies at home and only bring the newborns to the clinics for immunization...

The authors have studied the post-operative gynaecological and obstetrical results of conisation of the cervix in young women. Their study is of 143 conisations of which part of the subject is found in 81 cases where conisation was the only treatment for the cervical lesion. Haemorrage was an important complication occurring in 3 out of the 81 cases. Conisation does not alter the fertility of these women, who will require contraceptive measures to be taken if they want to avoid terminations of pregnancy. Pregnancy when it does continue in these patients after conisation is sometimes beset by complications due to this operation...

Having had a case of necrotising enterocolitis which occured on the third day after delivery and which was successfully treated by total colectomy with secondary restoration of bowel continuity, the authors discuss the pathogenicity of this condition. It can be secondary to a haemorragic or a septic obstetrical complication. It may equally be the sequel of a functional paralytic ileus which, although rare, is one of the classical complications following labour and Caesarean operations. In this way it can be compared to those cases of enterocolitis which are secondary to ileus, such as are found in patients who have a tumour of the colon or in patients who have been treated with neuroleptic drugs...
