In some patients, the resolution of severe maxillary atrophies can be hardly achieved without the use of zygomatic implants. Although many scientific studies have already demonstrated the excellent immediate stability in long term, the use of zygomatic implants is not yet widespread. Among the complications of this technique, the most threatening is the risk of damaging the eyeball or the maxillary nerve. The use of the navigator system as a surgical aid for implant placement allows to control, at any time, the position of the drill in the bone, avoiding any injury to ocular and nervous structures...

The purpose of this article is to describe reconstruction of the maxillary alveolar ridge by use of a microvascular free flap combined with an immediate tissue-engineered bone graft. This novel surgical technique involved the use of a radial forearm free flap and immediate allogeneic avascular bone graft augmented with bone morphogenetic protein and bone marrow aspirate concentrate. A poly-d,l-lactic acid mesh was used a containment unit for the bone graft. The patient was successfully treated with a viable radial forearm free flap for soft tissue and regeneration of bone with adequate height and width, which allowed the placement of 3 dental implants with excellent arch coordination...

The objective of the present study was to elucidate stability development of immediately loaded hybrid self-tapping implants inserted in the posterior maxilla. Forty-eight hybrid self-tapping implants with a chemically modified surface (∅4.1; length 8 mm) were inserted bilateral in the maxillary 1st and 2nd premolar and 1st molar sites of eight patients. In each patient, both sides of maxilla were randomly assigned to either immediate (IL) or early (EL) loading group. Implant stability was evaluated by means of resonance frequency analysis immediately after implant placement and after 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 26 and 52 weeks...

The recently popularised socket shield technique involves intentional retention of a thin buccal section of the remnant root at the time of immediate implant placement to preserve the buccal crestal bone from resorption. The objective of this systematic review was to assess the literature available on the socket-shield technique and weigh its biological plausibility and long-term clinical prognosis. A Systematic Search was performed in PubMed-Medline, Embase, Web of Knowledge, Google Scholar and Cochrane Central for clinical/ animal studies up to May 2016 without restrictions of language, duration, and follow-up...

INTRODUCTION: The position of the cup makes a major contribution to the success of total hip arthroplasty (THA). In conventional implantation of the prosthesis without navigation, the surgeon relies on the spatial position of the pelvis. However, iatrogenic manipulation of the pelvis during different surgical steps constantly changes the position of the pelvis during the operation. The position of the pelvis is substantial for the correct placement of the cup. The objective of this study was to investigate and visualize the course of this pelvic lift and correlate it to certain surgical steps...

INTRODUCTION: After implant placement, a stress-free healing period of 3-6 months is a pre-requisite to achieve good osseointegration. If this duration could be reduced, the patients would feel happier. Eventhough, immediate loading of implants is a clinically feasible concept; it is not possible in certain situations. Few studies have shown that Static magnetic field is useful to promote bone formation faster after the bone is wounded. AIM: This pilot study was intended to evaluate the tissue response after implant placement under the influence of magnetic field...

INTRODUCTION: The orthodontic mini-screws are the mainstay of direct skeletal anchorage which requires minimal compliance and provides maximal anchorage control. However, the timing of initiation of orthodontic loading of these mini-screws is not clearly established in the available studies. AIM: The purpose of this study was to determine the reciprocal effects on mini-screw implant with immediate loading in comparison to that of delayed loading during retraction...

Stable positioning of a transcatheter pulmonary valve (TPV) in native outflow tracts depends on a clear understanding of underlying anatomy and outflow tract dimensions. We hypothesized that restoration of pulmonary competence may acutely alter these dimensions. A retrospective single-center review of consecutive patients after TPV placement from 2007 to 2014 was performed. Patients with less than moderate pulmonary regurgitation were excluded. We reviewed acute catheterization data on 46 patients, most with tetralogy of Fallot (70%)...

In clinical orthopaedics, total joint replacements and spinal fusions are routine undertakings. Many of the implicated patients suffer from osteoporosis, severe arthrosis or osteopaenia. In individuals thus afflicted, the bony bed lacks the mechanical stability that is a requisite for a firm anchorage of the implant and its functional competence. To promote the bony bondage of an implant it is necessary to induce neo-ossification by the introduction of an osteogenic agent, such as bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2)...

Orbital fractures are a common result of facial trauma. Sequelae and indications for repair include enophthalmos and/or diplopia from extraocular muscle entrapment. Alloplastic implant placement with careful release of periorbital fat and extraocular muscles can effectively restore extraocular movements, orbital integrity, and anatomic volume. However, rare but devastating complications such as retrobulbar hematoma (RBH) can occur after repair, which pose a risk of permanent vision loss if not addressed emergently...
