INTRODUCTION: On-farm pig euthanasia considers aspects of animal welfare and industry economics. Guidelines are available about the euthanasia process, but the agricultural workforce is highly diverse and guidelines do not consider cultural barriers. Euthanasia requires the ability to identify compromised pigs, technical skills, and willingness to euthanize pigs. In addition, timely euthanasia is part of the Common Swine Industry Audit (CSIA) and, thus, can lead to failed audits if not performed as required by the audit standards...

The 'micro' level factors that affect the involvement of clinical pharmacists in ward rounds have not been widely explored. OBJECTIVE: Explore 'micro' level factors to gain insight into clinical pharmacists' participation in interprofessional ward rounds in inpatient settings through the lens of social cognitive theory...

Cilagicin is a dual polyprenyl phosphate binding lipodepsipeptide antibiotic with strong activity against clinically relevant Gram-positive pathogens while evading antibiotic resistance. Cilagicin showed high serum binding that reduced its in vivo efficacy. Cilagicin-BP, which contains a biphenyl moiety in place of the N-terminal myristic acid found on cilagicin, showed reduced serum binding and increased in vivo efficacy but decreased potency against some pathogens. Here, we manipulated the acyl tail and the peptide core of cilagicin to identify an optimized collection of structural features that maintain potent antibiotic activity against a wide range of pathogens in the presence of serum...

Technostress is a rising issue in the changing world of digital work. Technostress can cause severe adverse outcomes for individuals and organizations. Thus, organizations face the moral, legal, and economic responsibility to prevent employees' excessive technostress. As technostress develops over time, it is crucial to prevent it throughout the process of its emergence instead of only reacting after adverse outcomes occur. Contextualizing the Theory of Preventive Stress management to technostress, we synthesize and advance existing knowledge on inhibiting technostress...

Autistic individuals face a higher risk of various forms of victimization throughout their lives, with bullying being especially prevalent during their school years. Previous studies indicate that autistic children are 2.4 times more likely to be bullied than their typically developing peers and twice as vulnerable as those with other disabilities. However, the extent of this issue among Spanish schoolchildren with autism remains unexplored. In addition, there is no information regarding the presence of bullying victimization in children with marked but undiagnosed autistic traits (i...

Diabetic foot ulcers are a serious complication of uncontrolled diabetes, emphasizing the need to develop wound healing strategies that are not only effective but also biocompatible, biodegradable, and safe. We aimed to create biomatrices composed of semi-interpenetrated polymer networks of collagen, polyurethane, and dextran, to enhance the wound healing process. The hydrogels were extensively characterized by various analytical techniques, including analysis of their structure, crystallinity, thermal properties, gelation process, reticulation, degradation, cell proliferation, and healing properties, among others...

BACKGROUND: Generally, public health policy-making is hardly a linear process and is characterized by interactions among politicians, institutions, researchers, technocrats and practitioners from diverse fields, as well as brokers, interest groups, financiers and a gamut of other actors. Meanwhile, most public health policies and systems in Africa appear to be built loosely on technical and scientific evidence, but with high political systems and ideologies. While studies on national health policies in Africa are growing, there seems to be inadequate evidence mapping on common themes and concepts across existing literature...

From insects to humans, the nervous system generates complex behaviors mediated by distinct neural circuits that are composed of diverse cell types. During development, the spatiotemporal gene expression of the neural progenitors expands the diversity of neuronal and glial subtypes. Various neural stem cell-intrinsic and -extrinsic gene programs have been identified that are thought to play a major role in generating diverse neuronal and glial cell types. Drosophila has served as an excellent model system for discovering the fundamental principles of nervous system development and function...

The Drosophila central complex (CX) is a higher-order brain structure regulating various behaviors, including sensory-motor integration, celestial navigation, and sleep. Streptomyces has the largest repertoire of natural product biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), yet developing a universal engineering strategy for each Streptomyces species is challenging. Given that some Streptomyces species have larger BGC repertoires than others, we proposed that a set of genes co-evolved with BGCs to support biosynthetic proficiency must exist in those strains, and that their identification may provide universal strategies to improve the productivity of other strains. We show here that genes co-evolved with natural product BGCs in Streptomyces can be identified by phylogenomics analysis...

Nitric oxide (NO) is a gasotransmitter required in a broad range of mechanisms controlling plant development and stress conditions. However, little is known about the specific role of this signaling molecule during lipid storage in the seeds. Here, we show that NO is accumulated in developing embryos and regulates the fatty acid profile through the stabilization of the basic/leucine zipper transcription factor bZIP67. NO and nitro-linolenic acid target and accumulate bZIP67 to induce the downstream expression of FAD3 desaturase, which is misregulated in a non-nitrosylable version of the protein...
