BACKGROUND: Asthma is a multifactorial chronic disease, whose most frequent etiology is allergy, especially to Blomia tropicalis . In French Guiana, the childhood prevalence of Blomia T sensitization is unkwown. The aim of this study was to determine the proportion of sensitization to Blomia T and other mites in asthmatic children, and to describe the characteristics of childhood asthma in French Guiana. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study focused on children from 0 to 18 years of age, followed for asthma at the Department of Pediatrics of the Cayenne Hospital Center in French Guiana...

Lyme borreliosis (LB) existence in South America is debated, especially in the Amazon region. The infection with Lyme borreliae has never been reported in French Guiana where Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is not found in ticks. We describe the final diagnosis and presumed place of acquisition in patients consulting for suspicion of LB. We retrospectively collected data from all consecutive patients consulting for a suspicion of LB between 2010 and 2021 at Cayenne Hospital, French Guiana. Patients were classified by an adjudication committee as confirmed LB if they met the criteria of the French consensus, as possible LB if they had compatible symptoms and a good outcome after appropriate treatment, or excluded when a differential diagnosis was found...

Snakes play an important role as predators, prey, ecosystem regulators and in advancing the human economy and pharmaceutical industries by producing venom-based medications such as anti-serums and anti-venoms. On the other hand, snakebites are responsible for over 120,000 annual fatalities; due to snakebites people lose their lives and suffer from diseases such as snake envenoming, epilepsy, and symptoms such as punctures, swelling, haemorrhage, bruising, blistering, and inflammation. Moreover, there are several challenges associated with different interventions for managing snakebites...

Myiasis is an ectoparasitic infection caused by the larvae of true flies (Diptera). We came across a rather rare case of myiasis in an immunocompetent 34-year-old man from French Guiana with advanced wound myiasis masquerading as cavitary myiasis and a history of cholesteatoma surgery in the left ear. The Diptera larvae responsible for the disease were isolated and identified using morphological and molecular approaches as Cochliomyia hominivorax. We underline the importance of this parasitosis as the second case of myiasis caused by C...

Zoon's balanitis is a rare genital dermatosis of unknown etiology, usually presenting as a red-orange macule or plaque with a «cayenne pepper» appearance on the glans and/or foreskin. Unfortunately, atypical presentations are not uncommon, including vegetating or ulcerative lesions. Usually, it affects middle-age to older uncircumcised men. Although it is a benign pathology, Zoon's balanitis may be superimposed on another inflammatory or neoplastic dermatosis. As topical treatments are generally non satisfactory and relapses are usual on treatment with-drawal, circumcision remains an interesting option with usually a rapid and complete remission of the symptoms...

Lymphocytic hypophysitis (LH) is a primary inflammatory disorder of the pituitary gland and infundibulum that commonly manifests in both mass effect and endocrinologic symptoms. Although the exact pathophysiology remains unclear, it has been increasingly linked to an autoimmune process. Complications arise by two separate mechanisms. Inflammation in the sella can lead to headaches and visual field defects. Pituitary inflammation and, chronically, fibrosis interfere with the gland's hormone-secreting capacity, often resulting in various endocrinopathies such as polyuria, polydipsia, amenorrhea, and others...
