Meningiomas are among the most commonly encountered tumors of the central nervous system, being more frequent in females. We present the case of a dyslipidemic male patient, previously diagnosed with coronary artery disease for which he previously underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with the placement of two bare metal stents on the left anterior descending artery. He was presented to the emergency department for atypical angina and a seven-day history of dizziness when switching from clino- to orthostatism, reduced visual acuity, diplopia and vomiting...

BACKGROUND: Blood pressure variability (BPV) has recently been associated with adverse cardiovascular (CV) events, endothelial dysfunction as well as both CV and non-CV morbidity and mortality. Different BPV indicators have been associated with increased CV risk. METHODS: We included 744 hypertensive patients referred to our clinic for uncontrolled arterial hypertension (HTN) between 2012 and 2014, with a minimum of 40 successful daytime and 8 successful nighttime readings on automatic blood pressure monitoring (ABPM Meditech-05 device, recordings at 15-20 minutes intervals during daytime and 20-30 minutes intervals during nighttime)...

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular events, and its detection usually begins with an electrocardiogram (ECG). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of complete left bundle branch block (CLBBB) in hypertensive patients in the diagnostic performance of LVH by ECG. METHODS: A total of 2,240 hypertensive patients were studied. All of them were submitted to an ECG and an echocardiogram (ECHO)...

The taxonomy of the Brazilian aeglid species Aegla paulensis Schmitt, 1942 from two disjunct hydrographic basins is revised using morphological and molecular data. Results show that six disjunctive populations of Aegla paulensis form a species complex. Aegla paulensis sensu stricto is redescribed and Aegla rosanae Campos Jr., 1998 is revalidated. The four remaining populations previously assigned to Aegla paulensis are now recognized as different species, namely Aegla  vanini n. sp., Aegla japi n. sp., Aegla jaragua n...

In this paper, we study the Mendesellinae wasps from Brazil deposited at Departamento de Ecologia e Biologia Evolutiva da Universidade Federal de São Carlos, São Carlos, SP, Brazil collection. Two new species of Epsilogaster (E. masoni sp. n. and E. whitfieldi sp. n.) and four new species of Mendesella (M. albipleura sp. n., M. itatiaia sp. n., M. japi sp. n., M. yamadai sp. n.) are described and illustrated.

BACKGROUND: In general people after stroke do not meet the recommendations for physical activity to conduct a healthy lifestyle. Programs to stimulate walking activity to increase physical activity are based on the available insights into barriers and facilitators to physical activity after stroke. However, these programs are not entirely successful. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively explore perceived barriers and facilitators to outdoor walking using a model of integrated biomedical and behavioral theory, the Physical Activity for people with a Disability model (PAD)...

Intraspecific communication in frogs plays an important role in the recognition of conspecifics in general and of potential rivals or mates in particular and therefore with relevant consequences for pre-zygotic reproductive isolation. We investigate intraspecific communication in Hylodes japi, an endemic Brazilian torrent frog with territorial males and an elaborate courtship behavior. We describe its repertoire of acoustic signals as well as one of the most complex repertoires of visual displays known in anurans, including five new visual displays...

Frugivorous birds are important seed dispersers and influence the recruitment of many plant species in the rainforest. The efficiency of this dispersal generally depends on environment quality, bird species, richness and diversity of resources, and low levels of anthropogenic disturbance. In this study, we compared the sighting number of dusky-legged guans (Penelope obscura) by km and their movement in two areas of Serra do Japi, one around the administrative base (Base) where birds received anthropogenic food and a pristine area (DAE) with no anthropogenic resource...

Congenital scoliosis represents a spinal malformation due to defects of formation, segmentation or mixed ones. It is characterized by a longitudinal and rotational imbalance. 54 patients were analyzed and 39 out of them were operated by various approaches with anterior and posterior instrumentations during 2000 and 2012. The impossibility to appoint some patients encountered in the daily practice into the known classifications, allowed us to purpose two categories of congenital scoliosis related to the predominance of spinal deviances in the coronal and transversal views...

INTRODUCTION: The existent classifications of congenital scoliosis cannot contain all the cases encountered in the medical practice taking into account the complexity of the spine deformity in this pathology. PURPOSE: The paper represents a retrospective study that analyses a new classification of congenital scoliosis in comparison with the existing classification. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This study analyses 56 cases over a period of 14 years (2000-2013), based on the spine dominant deviation: longitudinal or rotational imbalance...

BACKGROUND: Up to the middle of the last century, the thoracic spine, especially in its upper part, has been considered an unapproachable site, a no-man's land, but the constant evolution of medicine imposed techniques of the spine at these levels in order to solve a large area of pathology (infectious, tumoral, traumatic, and last but not least, deformative). This way, a series of anterior approaches allowed surgeons to gain access to the anterior part of the spine and the posterior mediastinum...

BACKGROUND: Varus or valgus deviations of the femoral neck in osteogenesis imperfecta have been an ignored chapter because the classic correction procedures were applied in medical practice with unsatisfying results. Until the use of telescopic rods, coronal deviations remained unsolved and the distal configuration of the proximal femoral extremity remained uncorrected or partially corrected, which required an extensive use of the wheel chair or bed immobilization of the patient. The concomitant correction of the complex deformities, coxa vara/valga and femoral integrated configuration, have been a progress which allowed the patients to walk with or without support...

Cancer is the second cause of mortality worldwide, after cardiovascular diseases. Increased prevalence of cancer but also the fact that, most often, the diagnosis is established at a moment when therapeutic resources are already limited, constituted the premise for researching and developing indicators of disease or evolution. With the present article we aim to perform a brief review of the biomarkers currently in use in clinical practice for the diagnosis, prognosis and therapy of neoplasms, as well as those that are under evaluation...

ABSTRACT: HASH(0x4702388) OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical results of osteosynthesis with plate and screws versus anterograde locked intramedullary nail in fractures of the distal third of humeral diaphysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 184 patients with fractures of the distal third of humeral diaphysis were included in a prospective study. 82 patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation with plate and screws (Group 1), while in 102 cases, closed reduction and osteosynthesis with locked intramedullary nail was performed (Group 2)...

Pleural Disease Global Case ReportsSESSION TYPE: Global Case ReportPRESENTED ON: Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at 01:30 PM - 02:30 PMINTRODUCTION: Hemangioma is a compact, abnormal collection of blood vessels. It is a common benign vascular tumor, however, quite rare in some location including the thorax. Gindhart et al reported that it is less than 0.5% of all mediastinal masses and up to 75% of these lesions manifest before the age of 35 (1). Hemangiomas constitute 7% of all benign tumours.CASE PRESENTATION: A case of a 41 y...

AIM: To assess the results of surgical treatment in aneurysmal bone cysts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 31 patients with aneurysmal bone cysts underwent surgical treatment in our department. In almost half of cases, the lesion was located in the femur. In 12 cases, a pathological bone fracture was the first clinical sign. The treatment consisted in curettage, abrasion of the cavity inner walls using a motorized burr and filling with morsellized bone grafts (autografts ± allografts) or bone substitutes (four cases)...
