Preservation of the breast skin envelope during immediate implant-based breast reconstruction is important for producing symmetrical and natural-looking breasts. We propose the lazy S design for the closure of round-shaped wounds with the hope of improving the aesthetic outcomes and reducing the tension on the wound by preserving the skin. Additionally, the direction of tension is dispersed due to the shape of this design. Patients undergoing implant reconstruction after skin-sparing mastectomy may benefit from the lazy S design...

OBJECTIVE: The success of deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) depends on accurately placing the electrode into the GPi motor territory. Direct targeting can be difficult as GPi laminar borders are not always clearly identifiable on MRI. Here, we report a method for using the putamen (PUT) as a surrogate anatomical marker to target the GPi. METHODS: We developed a PUT-based GPi targeting using the FGATIR (fast gray matter acquisition T1-weighted inversion recovery) MRI sequence and compared it with consensus coordinate-based indirect targeting...

In this study, a biosensor to detect a stress biomarker of cortisol using cortisol monoclonal antibody (c-Mab) covalently immobilized on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) channel as electrical sensing element was demonstrated. Highly specific immune-recognition between the c-Mab and the cortisol was identified and characterized on a basis of resistance change at the rGO channel based chemiresistor sensor achieving the limit of detection of 10pg/mL (27.6 pM). In addition, cortisol concentrations of real human salivary sample and buffer solution of rat adrenal gland acute slices, which could secret the cortisol induced by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), were directly measured by the chemiresistor corresponding to the specific sensing of the cortisol...

Early recruitment of non-classical monocytes and their macrophage derivatives is associated with augmented tissue repair and improved integration of biomaterial constructs. A promising therapeutic approach to recruit these subpopulations is by elevating local concentrations of chemoattractants such as fractalkine (FKN, CX3CL1). However, delivering recombinant or purified proteins is not ideal due to their short half-lives, suboptimal efficacy, immunogenic potential, batch variabilities, and cost. Here we report an approach to enrich endogenous FKN, obviating the need for delivery of exogenous proteins...

Currently, the management of urban waste streams in developing countries is not optimized yet, and in many cases these wastes are disposed untreated in open dumps. This fact causes serious environmental and health problems due to the presence of contaminants and pathogens. Frequently, the use of specific low-cost strategies reduces the total amount of wastes. These strategies are mainly associated to the identification, separate collection and composting of specific organic waste streams, such as vegetable and fruit refuses from food markets and urban gardening activities...

Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is an effective therapy for patients who experience urinary incontinence, idiopathic urinary retention, and fecal incontinence. Although typically a low-risk procedure, rarely, it can be associated with significant hemorrhage. A 61-year-old woman on chronic anticoagulation underwent uncomplicated implantation of SNM for refractory urgency urinary incontinence. Anticoagulation was held on the day of surgery and resumed on postoperative day 1. On postoperative day 2, the patient developed an extensive retroperitoneal hemorrhage...

Immediate implant placement can pose challenges surgically and, ultimately, restoratively. Yet immediate placement has become the standard when adequate bone is present to achieve primary stability and site infection is minimal. To avoid prosthetic complications and ensure the implant is encased in bone after healing, proper planning must consider that implant placement does not necessarily need to follow the trajectory of the root socket. As discussed in this article, maxillary anterior sites have potential issues related to the "triangle of bone" that are not encountered in molar sites and demand different approaches to ensure treatment success...

Although many approaches to the restoration of edentulous maxillae and mandibles have been developed, these treatments can be costly and time-consuming, and involve extensive grafting of the edentulous ridges. The All-on-4® treatment concept has been shown to be a viable alternative, with limited grafting required, using at least four regular-platform implants to support an acrylic, screw-retained provisional prosthesis before the fabrication of a definitive prosthesis. This case presentation will discuss the use of narrow-platform (3...

With implant-supported reconstructions, gingiva-shaded pink-colored restorative materials serve as an option for replacing both hard and soft tissues cosmetically. This article presents a case report describing restorative treatment for a patient who requested individual crowns and veneers after she had had multiple surgical interventions to replace a failing implant tooth No. 9. In addition to replacement of the implant prosthesis, this case involved restorative papillae reconstruction that was performed to treat interdental recession that had occurred after the surgeries...

Type 3 extraction sockets present a unique challenge in that they possess gingival recession indicative of facial hard- and soft-tissue loss. When teeth present with prior disease requiring removal and implant replacement, the treatment strategy incorporates palatal implant positioning as well as proper restorative contour management to compensate for the recession defect, thereby allowing the gingival tissues to heal in the correct 3-dimensional position. This article describes the case of a patient with a nonrestorable maxillary right central incisor with internal resorption...
