BACKGROUND: Friedreich ataxia is a rare genetic disorder associated with progressive mitochondrial dysfunction leading to widespread sequelae including ataxia, muscle weakness, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, diabetes mellitus, and neuromuscular scoliosis. Children with Friedreich ataxia are at high risk for periprocedural complications during posterior spinal fusion due to their comorbidities. AIM: To describe our single-center perioperative management of patients with Friedreich ataxia undergoing posterior spinal fusion...

Cyclic annulation involving diaryliodonium salts is an efficient tool for the construction of two or more chemical bonds in a one-pot process. Ortho -functionalized diaryliodonium salts have showcased distinct reactivity in the exploration of benzocyclization or arylocyclization. With this strategy of ortho -ester-substituted diaryliodonium salts, herein, we utilized a copper catalyst to activate the C-I bond of diaryliodonium salts in the generation of aryl radicals, thus resulting in an annulation reaction with naphthols and substituted phenols...

We confirm the previously revised stereochemistry of spiroviolene by X-ray crystallographically characterizing a hydrazone derivative of 9-oxospiroviolane, which is synthesized by hydroboration/oxidation of spiroviolene followed by oxidation of the resultant hydroxy group. An unexpected thermal boron migration occurred during the hydroboration process of spiroviolene that resulted in the production of a mixture of 1α-hydroxyspiroviolane, 9α- and 9β-hydroxyspiroviolane after oxidation. The assertion of the cis -orientation of the 19- and 20-methyl groups provided further support for the revised cyclization mechanism of spiroviolene...

Drimane-type sesquiterpenoids (DMTs) are characterized by a distinctive 6/6 bicyclic skeleton comprising the A and B rings. While DMTs are commonly found in fungi and plants, their presence in bacteria has not been reported. Moreover, the biosynthetic pathways for DMTs have been primarily elucidated in fungi, with identified P450s only acting on the B ring. In this study, we isolated and characterized three bacterial DMTs, namely 3β-hydroxydrimenol ( 2 ), 2α-hydroxydrimenol ( 3 ), and 3-ketodrimenol ( 4 ), from Streptomyces clavuligerus ...

BACKGROUND: The current rate of organ donation in China falls significantly below the global average and the actual demand. Nursing students play a crucial role in supporting and promoting social and public welfare activities. This study primary aims to analyze the levels of knowledge, attitudes, willingness toward organ donation, and attitudes toward death among nursing students, and investigate the mediating role of attitude in the relationship between knowledge and willingness. The secondary aims to identify factors that may influence the willingness...

PURPOSE: Through three neurocritical care unit (NCCU) surveys in China, we tried to understand the development status of neurocritical care and clarify its future development. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey method and self-report questionnaires, the number and quality of NCCUs were investigated through three steps: administering the questionnaire, sorting the survey data, and analyzing the survey data. RESULTS: At the second and third surveys, the number of NCCUs (76/112/206) increased by 47% and 84%, respectively...

BACKGROUND: The major facilitator superfamily glucose transporters (GLUTs), encoded by solute carrier 2A (SLC2A) genes, mediate the transmembrane movement and uptake of glucose. To satisfy the improved energy demands, glycolysis flux is increased in cancers compared with healthy tissues. Multiple diseases, including cancer, have been associated with GLUTs. Nevertheless, not much research has been done on the functions of SLC2As in pan-cancer prognosis or their clinical treatment potential...

It is unclear whether cognitive impairment and the longitudinal change in cognition are associated with the risk of fatal stroke in aging populations. Based on the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study data a sum of 26,064 participants at baseline and all deaths caused by stroke in a mean follow-up of 14.3 years (standard deviation = 3.2) were included, and the Cox proportional hazard regression was used in this prospective cohort study. Despite growing evidence suggesting an important contribution of Tumor Protein P53 Inducible Protein 11 (TP53I11) in cancer progression, the role of TP53I11 remains unclear. Our first pan-cancer analysis of TP53I11 showed some tumor tissues displayed reduced TP53I11 expression compared to normal tissues, while others exhibited high TP53I11 expression. Meanwhile, TP53I11 expression carries a particular pan-cancer risk, as high TP53I11 expression levels are detrimental to survival for BRCA, KIRP, MESO, and UVM, but to beneficial survival for KIRC...

The global emergence of antimicrobial resistance to multiple antibiotics has recently become a significant concern. Gram-negative bacteria, known for their ability to acquire mobile genetic elements such as plasmids, represent one of the most hazardous microorganisms. This phenomenon poses a serious threat to public health. Notably, the significance of tigecycline, a member of the antibiotic group glycylcyclines and derivative of tetracyclines has increased. Tigecycline is one of the last-resort antimicrobial drugs used to treat complicated infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, extensively drug-resistant (XDR) bacteria or even pan-drug-resistant (PDR) bacteria...

Xanthomonas and Stenotrophomonas are closely related genera in the family Lysobacteraceae. In our previous study of aroid-associated bacterial strains, most strains isolated from anthurium and other aroids were reclassified as X. phaseoli and other Xanthomonas species. However, two strains isolated from Spathiphyllum and Colocasia were phylogenetically distant from other strains in the Xanthomonas clade and two strains isolated from Anthurium clustered within the Stenotrophomonas clade. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA and nine housekeeping genes placed the former strains with the type strain of X...

Unilateral acute idiopathic maculopathy (UAIM) is a rare disease that may cause unilateral vision loss in young adults after a flu-like illness. Occasionally, it is associated with hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) and is often underdiagnosed. Herein, we report a case with characteristics of UAIM associated with HFMD with acute enteroviral infection. On the basis of the clinical findings using multimodality diagnostic imaging, including fundus image, optical coherence tomography, fluorescence angiography, and serological test for pan-enterovirus RNA polymerase chain reaction, we detailed the clinical course and postulated the pathogenesis of UAIM with choroiditis associated with HFMD...
