Background and Objectives : Appendiceal carcinoids are rare neuroendocrine tumors and mainly found incidentally during histopathological examination following appendectomy. This observational cohort study was performed to determine the prevalence, treatment modalities and outcomes in children diagnosed with an appendiceal carcinoid tumor. Materials and Methods : Data from the largest German statutory health insurance "Techniker Krankenkasse" were analyzed within an 8-year period: January 2010 to December 2012 and January 2016 to December 2020...

Goblet cell adenocarcinomas (GCA) are infrequent neoplasms of the digestive system that exhibit both mucinous and neuroendocrine differentiation. They predominate in the appendix and rarely involve the colon. Herein, the authors report a case of GCA involving the ascending colon in a 60-year-old woman who presented with severe anemia.

Appendiceal diverticulitis (AD) is an overlooked pathology that carries a high risk of perforation and associated neoplasia, especially carcinoid tumours and mucinous adenoma. AD may be congenital, but more commonly acquired. It may cause diverticulitis, which causes clinical and radiological signs like those of acute appendicitis, and that may delay the diagnosis till it is confirmed on histopathological examination. Here we report a case of acute AD in a case initially diagnosed as acute appendicitis.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical, surgical, and pathological findings of appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasms (ANNs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The demographic, clinical, surgical, and pathological characteristics of 50 patients with ANN were analyzed. The patients were also classified as Group 1 (< 40 years, n = 37) and Group 2 (≥ 40 years, n = 13), and compared each other in terms of all parameters. RESULTS: Acute appendicitis was the pre-operative clinical presentation in 48 (96%) patients...

Cecal appendix tumors are unusual and have a low frequency of presentation, which is reported between 0.2 and 0.5% of all digestive tract tumors. From the mentioned tumors, the carcinoid ones are the most common neoplasms of the cecal appendix and are characterized in most cases by slow growth and an asymptomatic clinical course. However, in some cases, they can present as a metastatic disease with fatal outcomes. We report the case of a 24-year-old female patient with a typical case of acute appendicitis, in whom an additional diagnosis of a carcinoid tumor is obtained upon receipt of the pathology report...

Appendicitis is one of the most common sources of abdominal pain in the emergency setting and is generally considered a straightforward diagnosis. However, atypical appearances, non-visualization, and inconclusive features can make these cases more complicated. The objectives of this article are to review the differential diagnoses for right lower quadrant pain, discuss the imaging characteristics of simple appendicitis on computed tomography (CT), and provide guidance for equivocal cases, complicated appendicitis, and appendicitis mimics...

Goblet cell carcinoma (GCC) is a rare primary tumor of the appendix characterized by both epithelial and neuroendocrine components containing goblet cells. While in the past, the GCC has been associated with neuroendocrine tumors, recent studies consider that GCC is closer to adenocarcinoma than a neuroendocrine component. The association between gastro-intestinal (GI) carcinoids and second primary malignancies (SPMs) is widely described in the literature, but there is no reported case of GCC and synchronous adjacent adenocarcinoma of the colon...

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasia (NEN) incidence is rising internationally. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiology of NEN in England and examine changes in survival over time. METHODS: A retrospective, population-based study using nationally representative data between 1995 and 2018 from the National Cancer Registry and Analysis Service (NCRAS) in England was conducted on 63,949 tumours. Age-standardized incidence was calculated using Office for National Statistics (ONS) data...

Updated Polish recommendations for the management of patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the small intestine (SINENs) and of the appendix (ANENs) are presented here. The small intestine, and especially the ileum, is one of the most common locations for these neoplasms. Most of them are well-differentiated and slow-growing tumours; uncommonly - neuroendocrine carcinomas. Their symptoms may be untypical and their diagnosis may be delayed or accidental. Najczęściej pierwszą manifestacją ANEN jest jego ostre zapalenie...

NETs G3 occur mostly in the pancreas, colon, rectum, and stomach and only rarely in the small intestine and the appendix. In the bronchopulmonary system, similar tumors have also been recognized and were mostly classified as atypical carcinoid (AC) or large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma...

Appendiceal diverticulosis is a rare finding associated with appendiceal neoplasms. Both can masquerade as appendicitis in patients and are overlooked in differentials of right upper quadrant pain. Carcinoid tumours are present in a wide range of organs but most frequently involve the gastrointestinal tract and rarely reported in gynaecological organs. Literature reports that the prevalence of ovarian carcinoid is 0.3%-1% of ovarian neoplasms and accounts for only 5% of ovarian teratomas. The pathogenesis of neuroendocrine tumours associated with synchronous primaries is undetermined and many theories have been proposed, such as existence of a common carcinogenic effect or a common stem cell undergoing similar genetic mutation...

Introduction The appendix is considered an appendage of little value and is often treated disdainfully, be it as part of evolutionary process, on a grossing table, under a microscope or while archiving specimens and slides. It is only recently, with data indicating its importance in gut immunity and as the origin of pseudomyxoma, that its space in a human body appears vindicated. Aim Our aim was to screen the histopathologic spectrum of appendix lesions observed in our hospital for rare, incidental or clinico-radiologically uncertain lesions that would help emphasize a necessary seriousness in its sampling...

Goblet cell adenocarcinoma is a rare appendiceal tumour with amphicrine differentiation that has distinct morphologic and clinical features compared to carcinomas seen elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract. These tumors have engendered considerable confusion in the literature regarding their classification, and they have been described under several different names including goblet cell carcinoid, adenocarcinoid, and adenocarcinoma, among others. In the recent fifth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Digestive System Tumors, goblet cell adenocarcinoma is the preferred diagnosis because of the increasing recognition of a frequent co-existing high-grade adenocarcinoma component...

Appendectomies are not uncommonly performed following an intraoperative diagnosis of a mucinous ovarian neoplasm, although the evidentiary basis for the practice is relatively limited. The current study is a contemporary re-examination of the issue, based on an analysis of a large single institutional cohort. We assessed whether there are any composite of factors that may be associated with the finding of significant disease in the appendix in this setting following intraoperative consultation (IOC) diagnosis of a mucinous neoplasm on an ovary-based mass...

Diverticulum of the appendix is uncommon cause of right iliac fossa pain and inflammation with delayed diagnosis and high risk of complications, as it mimics acute appendicitis. Here we present a case of an elderly male patient who had lung cancer post-treatment. During the follow-up, appendicle lesion was discovered and suspected to be mucinous appendix. The pathology reported after appendectomy as appendicular diverticulosis without evidence of malignancy. As appendicular diverticulum is best confirmed by pathology, still its clinical presentation is difficult to be distinguished from other appendicular diseases...

Cecal appendix tumors are extremely rare (less than 0.5%), with carcinoid tumors being described as the most common type of appendix tumor. A case of a 32-year-old male patient is reported, with no significant pathological history, with acute abdomen data. Laparoscopic appendectomy was decided, presenting findings of an appendicular inflammatory process, resulting in a neuroendocrine tumor histopathology report. Despite the fact that appendix neoplasias are rare, appendicitis is a common presentation, hence the importance of conducting histopathology studies on every piece of cecal appendix obtained...
