PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is focused on diagnostic and management strategies for colonic diverticular bleeding (CDB). It aims to present the current state of the field, highlighting the available techniques, and emphasizing findings that influence the choice of therapy. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent guidelines recommend nonurgent colonoscopy (>24 h) for CDB. However, factors such as a shock index ≥1, which may warrant an urgent colonoscopy, remain under investigation...

Uncontrolled bleeding after trauma represents a substantial clinical problem. The current standard of care to treat bleeding after trauma is transfusion of blood products including platelets; however, donated platelets have a short shelf life, are in limited supply, and carry immunogenicity and contamination risks. Consequently, there is a critical need to develop hemostatic platelet alternatives. To this end, we developed synthetic platelet-like particles (PLPs), formulated by functionalizing highly deformable microgel particles composed of ultralow cross-linked poly ( N -isopropylacrylamide) with fibrin-binding ligands...

Nanoporous aerogel fibers enjoy the luxury of being one of the most attractive nanomaterials. However, the representative fabrication pathways have faced up with low production rates due to significant speed mismatch between slow sol-gel transition and as fast as possible spinning in the same period. Herein, a novel gas-blows-liquid spinning (GS) strategy with a spinning speed of 300-700 m s-1 is developed to get the high-speed and high-efficiency production of aerogel fibers/fabrics. The spinning speed of the GS strategy is 900 times higher than various techniques reported for aerogel fibers...

Skin injuries are a global healthcare problem. Chronic ulcers do not heal in a timely fashion, so it is essential to help the body with skin repair. There are some treatments that have been applied to chronic ulcers. One of these treatments is growth factor (GF) therapy. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Platelet-poor plasma (PPP) are two types of plasma derivatives containing many GFs important for wound healing. Several works have reported their application in wound healing and tissue regeneration. The use of autologous PRP is now an adequate alternative in regenerative medicine...

In China, A. indica is a vegetable and also used as a folk medicine due to its antipyretic and hemostatic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. In February 2022 and 2023, powdery mildew symptoms were observed on 70% of A. indica plants on the Hainan Medical University campus (19° 58' 53″ N; 110° 19' 47″ E) in Haikou, Hainan Province, China...

Patient blood management (PBM) guidelines for patients undergoing cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) have increased during the past decade, and pharmacotherapy plays an important role in PBM. In the face of the undefined consistency in the methodologic quality and pharmacotherapy recommendations across multiple guidelines, this study exclusively evaluated methodologies of the related guideline development process, and compiled medication recommendations of PBM for cardiac surgery patients. PBM guidelines for cardiac surgery under CPB were searched through some mainstream literature and guideline databases from database establishment to May 15, 2023...

Hemostasis of deep irregular wounds is a severe problem in clinical practice. The development of rapid-acting hemostatic agents for deep and irregular wound is urgently needed. Here, sodium alginate/carboxycellulose/polydopamine (SA/CNF/PDA) microspheres was prepared by reverse emulsification and crosslinking with Ca2+ , and SA/CNF/PDA composite hemostatic microspheres with porous structure were obtained by freeze-drying. SA/CNF/PDA composite hemostatic microspheres exhibited excellent porosity and water absorption which could rapidly absorb blood on the wound surface...

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is the second-most-common inherited bleeding disorder worldwide and remains without approved therapies. HHT causes serious mucosal bleeding resulting in severe iron deficiency anemia, major psychosocial complications, and visceral arteriovenous malformations in brain, lung, and liver that can cause life-threatening hemorrhagic complications. No study has examined the relative morbidity of HHT and von Willebrand disease (VWD), the most common inherited bleeding disorders in women...

Median sternotomy surgery stands as one of the prevailing strategies in cardiac surgery. In this study, the cutting-edge bone adhesive is designed, inspired by the impressive adhesive properties found in mussels and sandcastle worms. We have created an osteogenic nanocomposite coacervate adhesive by integrating a cellulose-polyphosphodopamide interpenetrating network, quaternized chitosan, and zinc, gallium-doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles. This adhesive is characterized by robust catechol-metal coordination which effectively adheres to both hard and soft tissues with a maximum adhesive strength of 900 ±38 kPa on the sheep sternum bone, surpassing that of commercial bone adhesives...

Background: Although hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is frequently associated with thrombosis, it is also associated with liver cirrhosis (LC) which causes hemostatic abnormalities. Therefore, hemostatic abnormalities in patients with HCC were examined using a clot waveform analysis (CWA). Methods: Hemostatic abnormalities in 88 samples from HCC patients, 48 samples from LC patients and 153 samples from patients with chronic liver diseases (CH) were examined using a CWA-activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and small amount of tissue factor induced FIX activation (sTF/FIXa) assay...

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cuttlefish bone (cuttlebone, CB) and CB loaded with cuttlefish ink (CB-CFI) nanoparticles for hemorrhage control. CB and CB-CFI were prepared and characterized using different methods. The hemostasis behavior of constructed biocomposites was investigated in vitro and in vivo using a rat model. BACKGROUND: Persistent intraoperative bleeding, excessive post-operative ecchymosis, epistaxis, or blood collection in the supratip area increases the complexity of rhinoplasty, causing suboptimal outcomes. We present an intraoperative bleeding management algorithm developed by the senior author (B.G.) based on 43 years of experience and assess its efficacy in achieving hemostatic control through 103 consecutive cases. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has the capability of assisting in the recovery of damaged tissues by releasing a variety of biologically active factors to initiate a hemostatic cascade reaction and promote the synthesis of new connective tissue and revascularization. It is now widely used for tissue engineering repair. In addition, PRP has demonstrated nerve repair and pain relief, and has been studied and applied to the facial nerve, median nerve, sciatic nerve, and central nerve. These suggest that PRP injection therapy has a positive effect on nerve repair...

Background Viscoelastic hemostatic assays (VHA) provide more comprehensive assessments of coagulation compared to conventional coagulation assays. While VHAs have enabled guided hemorrhage control therapies, improving clinical outcomes in life-threatening hemorrhage, the role of VHAs in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is unclear. If VHAs can identify coagulation abnormalities relevant for ICH outcomes, this would support the need to investigate the role of VHAs in ICH treatment paradigms. Thus, we investigated whether VHA assessments of coagulation relate to long-term ICH outcomes...
