Best-worst scaling is a judgment format in which participants are presented with a set of items and have to choose the superior and inferior items in the set. Best-worst scaling generates a large quantity of information per judgment because each judgment allows for inferences about the rank value of all unjudged items. This property of best-worst scaling makes it a promising judgment format for research in psychology and natural language processing concerned with estimating the semantic properties of tens of thousands of words...

Pulmonary oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]) slowly increases during exercise above the anaerobic threshold, and this increase is called the slow component of [Formula: see text]. The mechanism of the increase in [Formula: see text] is assumed to be due to increasing energy cost associated with increasingly inefficient muscle contraction. We hypothesized that the increase in [Formula: see text] would be accompanied by a constant or increasing rate of accumulation of blood lactate, indicating sustained anaerobic metabolism while [Formula: see text] increased...

Grasping is a complex task routinely performed in an anticipatory (feedforward) manner, where sensory feedback is responsible for learning and updating the internal model of grasp dynamics. This study aims at evaluating whether providing a proportional tactile force feedback during the myoelectric control of a prosthesis facilitates learning a stable internal model of the prosthesis force control. Ten able-bodied subjects controlled a sensorized myoelectric prosthesis performing four blocks of consecutive grasps at three levels of target force (30, 50, and 70%), repeatedly closing the fully opened hand...

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibro-inflammatory disease. This disease may be associated with elevated serum and tissue IgG4 levels. Early treatment prevents fibrosis and organ damage. We retrospectively studied the clinicopathologic correlation and outcome of treatment in IgG4-RD. This single-center retrospective study was done using electronic records of patients subjected to assay of serum IgG4 levels in our laboratory by nephelometry. There were 473 patients with suspected IgG4-RD. Of them, 41 patients fulfilled comprehensive diagnostic criteria for IgG4-RD and 432 had diseases other than IgG4-RD...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There are few effective therapies to achieve functional recovery from motor-related disabilities affecting the upper limb after stroke. This feasibility study tested whether a powered exoskeleton driven by a brain-computer interface (BCI), using neural activity from the unaffected cortical hemisphere, could affect motor recovery in chronic hemiparetic stroke survivors. This novel system was designed and configured for a home-based setting to test the feasibility of BCI-driven neurorehabilitation in outpatient environments...

BACKGROUND: In children with localized Ewing sarcoma (ES), addition of ifosfamide and etoposide to cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and vincristine (VDC/IE) improved 5-year overall survival (OS) to 70%-80%. Prior to delivery of VDC/IE in adults, 5-year OS was <50%. We reviewed our institutional outcomes for adults with ES who received VDC/IE-based treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1997-2013, 67 adults with localized ES were treated with curative intent...

In ruminants, prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2α)-mediated luteolysis is essential prior to estrous cycle resumption, and is a target for improving fertility. To deduce early PGF2α-provoked changes in the corpus luteum a short time-course (0.5-4 h) was performed on cows at midcycle. A microarray-determined transcriptome was established and examined by bioinformatic pathway analysis. Classic PGF2α effects were evident by changes in early response genes (FOS, JUN, ATF3) and prediction of active pathways (PKC, MAPK)...

PURPOSE: Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) is a viable treatment for complex radial head fracture. Whereas elbow stability and function is typically restored at short- to mid-term follow-up, the outcome in higher-demand populations is not well defined. We sought to characterize the functional and occupational outcomes following RHA in an active duty military population with intense upper extremity demands. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all U.S...

We have designed and synthesized a series of indole-based σ2 receptor ligands containing 5,6-dimethoxyisoindoline or 6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline as pharmacophore. In vitro competition binding assays showed that all ten ligands possessed low nanomolar affinity (Ki=1.79-5.23nM) for σ2 receptors and high subtype selectivity (Ki (σ2)/Ki (σ1)=56-708). Moreover, they showed high selectivity for σ2 receptor over the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (>1000-fold). The corresponding radiotracers [(18)F]16 and [(18)F]21 were prepared by an efficient one-pot, two-step reaction sequence with a home-made automated synthesis module, with 10-15% radiochemical yield and radiochemical purity of >99%...

Southeastern states namely Georgia, Florida, and Alabama produce two-thirds of the peanuts in the United States. Thrips-transmitted Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), which causes spotted wilt disease, has been a major impediment to peanut production for the past three decades. The cultivars grown in the 1980s were extremely susceptible to TSWV. Early yield losses extended to tens of millions of dollars each year (up to 100% loss in many fields). This situation led to the creation of an interdisciplinary team known as "SWAT: Spotted Wilt Action Team"...

OBJECTIVE: In the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU), medication administration is challenging. Empirical studies demonstrate that interruptions occur frequently and that nurses are fundamental in the delivery of medication. However, little is known about nurse's decision making when interrupted during medication administration. Therefore, the objective is to understand decision making when interrupted during medication administration within the PICU. RESEARCH DESIGN: A qualitative study incorporating non-participant observation and audio recorded semi-structured interviews...

BACKGROUND: Validated diagnostic algorithms in patients with suspected pulmonary embolism are often not used correctly or only benefit subgroups of patients, leading to overuse of computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA). The YEARS clinical decision rule that incorporates differential D-dimer cutoff values at presentation, has been developed to be fast, to be compatible with clinical practice, and to reduce the number of CTPA investigations in all age groups. We aimed to prospectively evaluate this novel and simplified diagnostic algorithm for suspected acute pulmonary embolism...

BACKGROUND: The goal of treatment for spinal arteriovenous lesions is to completely obliterate the shunt. In our institution, intra-operative digital subtraction angiography (IODSA) and intra-arterial injection of contrast agent have already been used to accurately identify the site of arteriovenous shunts. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we describe the IODSA and intra-arterial dye injection (IADI) procedures, and how they may improve surgical outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 22 patients with intra-dural arteriovenous lesions(n = 19) or spinal dural arteriovenous fistulae (SDAVFs) (n = 3)...
