PURPOSE: Lacrimal gland lesions have diverse pathologies. Bone remodelling on imaging may suggest a benign lacrimal gland pleomorphic adenoma (LGPA) rather than a malignant process. METHODS: The authors report a case of malignant pleomorphic adenocarcinoma, which was misdiagnosed clinico-radiologically as a benign LGPA. Lesions with bone remodelling on CT imaging were subsequently analysed amongst a cohort of 31 lacrimal gland lesions from a single tertiary centre...

OBJECTIVE: Transient urinary retention has been recognized as a complication of bilateral ureteroneocystostomy (UNC), when performed extravesically. The objective of this study was to review a collective surgeons' experiences of unilateral extra- and unilateral and/or bilateral intra-vesical ureteral reimplanation, where urinary retention greater than 6 weeks, or what we have termed, "prolonged urinary retention" (PUR), occurred. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed charts to identify PUR after any open or robotic reimplant, other than bilateral extravesical, between 1998 and 2015 as reported by five surgeons...

Genomic prediction is a statistical method to predict phenotypes of polygenic traits using high throughput genomic data. Most diseases and behaviors in human and animals are polygenic traits. The majority of agronomic traits in crops are also polygenic. Accurate prediction of these traits can help medical professionals diagnose acute diseases and breeders to increase food products, and therefore, significantly contribute to human health and global food security. The best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) is an important tool to analyze high throughput genomic data for prediction...

Severe late damage to normal tissue is a major limitation of cancer radiotherapy in prostate cancer patients. In a recent retrospective study, late radiation toxicity was found to relate to a decreased decay of γ-H2AX foci and reduced induction of DNA double strand break repair genes. Here we report evidence of prognostic utility in prostate cancer for γ-H2AX foci decay ratios and gene expression profiles derived from ex vivo-irradiated patient lymphocytes. Patients were followed ≥2 years after radiotherapy...

The contribution of somatic mutations to metastasis of colorectal cancers (CRC) is currently unknown. To find mutations involved in the CRC metastatic process, we performed deep mutational analysis of 676 genes in 107 stages II-IV primary CRC, of which half had metastasized. The mutation prevalence in the ephrin (Eph) family of tyrosine kinase receptors was ten-fold higher in primary tumors of metastatic CRC than in non-metastatic cases and preferentially occurred in stage III and IV tumours. Mutational analyses in situ confirmed expression of mutant Eph receptors...

BACKGROUND: Endovascular recanalization of a completely occluded proximal internal carotid artery (ICA) with underlying stenosis may be challenging owing to a possible thrombotic component. This is especially true when the landing zone for a balloon-tipped guiding catheter (BGC) at the bulb portion is insufficient. Sequential application of the balloons of a BGC and an angioplasty catheter may prevent thromboembolism during revascularization. This study analyzed the safety and effectiveness of this relay-balloon technique...

Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) is a highly polymorphic glycoprotein antiprotease, involved in the regulation of human immune response. Beyond some genomic characterization and a few protein characterizations, the function of teleost AAT remains uncertain. In this study we cloned an AAT-like gene from a swamp eel liver identifying four exons and three introns, and the full-length cDNA. The elucidated swamp eel AAT amino acid sequence showed high homology with known AATs from other teleosts. The swamp eel AAT was examined both in ten healthy tissues and in four bacterially-stimulated tissues resulting in up-regulation of swamp eel AAT at different times...

This study assessed the extent to which high fat diet (HFD)-induced β-amyloid accumulation and cognitive decline in APP/PSEN1 mice are reversible through control of fat intake. Ten months of HFD (60% calories from fat) led to significant deficits in a 2-trial Y maze task, and nest building assay, and decreased voluntary locomotor activity. The HFD induced an inflammatory response, indicated by increased expression of several inflammatory markers. Substituting a low fat diet led to pronounced weight loss and correction of glucose intolerance, decreases in the inflammatory response, and improved performance on behavioral tasks in both wild-type and APP/PSEN1 transgenic mice...

BACKGROUND: Identification of strategies to improve organ donor utilization remains imperative. Despite the association between hospital volume and outcomes for many common disease processes, there have been no studies to assess the impact of organ donor hospital volume on organ yield. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective observational study of all deceased organ donors managed by ten OPOs across UNOS Regions 4, 5, and 6 was conducted from February 2012-June 2015. In order to study the impact of hospital volume on organ yield, each donor was placed into a hospital volume quartile based on the number of donors managed by their hospital...

Flame retardants are associated to numerous adverse health effects, can accumulate in humans and have been used intensively worldwide. Recently, dust has been identified as a major human exposure route for flame retardants. The aim of this study was to develop a multi-residue method using a two-step SPE purification. It enabled us to effectively limit co-extracted matrix/interferets and therefore a simultaneous analysis of brominated and organophosphate flame retardants for indoor dust was achieved. The optimized method was validated according to standard protocol and achieved good accuracy and reproducibility (percent error ranged from -29% to 28%)...
