Quality assurance (QA) and safety are important components of obstetric imaging. Quality involves accreditation of the imaging unit as well as equipment inspection for function and image quality. The personnel working in the unit must demonstrate qualifications to perform, evaluate, and interpret the studies. Standardizing the required elements of the examination helps assure that a quality examination has been performed. QA and safety as well as physician requirements and equipment QA programs in ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance will be discussed with an in depth look at ultrasound due to its more frequent use in pregnancy...

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy that is frequently left undiagnosed by inexperienced obstetricians and radiologists. It is associated with higher risk of maternal hemorrhage at any gestation and more at advanced gestation. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 22-year-old sub-Saharan African woman, gravida 3 para 0, who was diagnosed with advanced abdominal pregnancy of 25 weeks' gestation by a transvaginal ultrasound after the failure of two medical terminations of pregnancy in the first and second trimesters and a series of repeated obstetric ultrasounds showing intrauterine pregnancy...

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become a topical subject and can be applied in a variety of ways with differing outcomes. The cost of all diagnostic procedures including obstetric ultrasound examinations is a major factor in the developing world and POCUS is only useful if it can be equated to good outcomes at a lower cost than a routine obstetric examination. The aim of this study was to assess a number of processes including accuracy of images and reports generated by midwives, performance of a tablet-sized ultrasound scanner, training of midwives to complete ultrasounds, teleradiology solution transmissions of images via internet, review of images by a radiologist, communication between midwife and radiologist, use of this technique to identify high-risk patients and improvement of the education and teleradiology model components...

Hypertensive disease and preeclampsia are serious medical disorders affecting pregnancy. Screening in early pregnancy may identify women at risk of developing hypertensive disease and enable prophylactic treatment. Accurate blood pressure measurement is an important part of this screening. The aim of this study was to investigate whether patients, with the aid of a context-aware sensor-based blood pressure self-measurement system, were able to correctly self-measure their blood pressure adhering to internationally established recommendations...

The Beyond Ultrasound First Forum was conceived to increase awareness that the quality of obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound can be improved, and is inconsistent throughout the country, likely due to multiple factors, including the lack of a standardized curriculum and competency assessment in ultrasound teaching. The Forum brought together representatives from many professional associations, the imaging community including radiology, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine among others, in addition to government agencies, insurers, industry and others with common interest in obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound...

INTRODUCTION: The influence of levator-ani muscles on second stage labour is poorly understood. The ability of these muscles to stretch without damage may affect birth outcomes, but little is known about material properties, effects of pregnancy and/or ethnicity on levator-ani stiffness. There are strong associations between muscle damage and subsequent pelvic floor disorders. This study aimed to quantify levator-ani muscle stiffness during the third trimester of pregnancy and postpartum in European and Polynesian women...

BACKGROUND: Uterine anomalies causing fetal complications are very rarely encountered in obstetric practice and thus pose a diagnostic dilemma. CASE: A multigravid patient attended the clinic for an ultrasound examination in the third trimester following a recent hospital admission for abdominal pain. Ultrasound imaging revealed a large uterine diverticulum in the right cornu of the uterus with evidence of fetal leg entrapment. Because of concerns of increased soft tissue edema in the entrapped leg, the patient was delivered at 35 weeks' gestation by elective CS...
