Double ballon endoscopy

Oliver Moeschler, Michael Karl Mueller
Since its introduction in 2001 capsule endoscopy opened up the small bowel for diagnostic approaches followed by double balloon enteroscopy which enabled the endoscopic community to perform therapeutic interventions in the whole small intestine. In this review the scientific developments related to indications, diagnostic yield and complications of the last years between the competing devices double ballon enteroscopy, single balloon enteroscopy and spiral enteroscopy are illustrated.

It was done 192 double-ballon enteroscopies in 141 patients at the period from March 2009 to March 2012. Epithelial benign tumors were detected in 10 (7.1%) patients with congenital polypoid syndromes. Endoscopic excision of polyps was done in 6 patients including 1 case with laparoscopic-assisted technique. Urgent open surgeries were performed before this in 4 patients with Peutz-Jeghers' syndrome and invaginated small bowel obstruction. The authors consider that double-ballon enteroscopy is highly informative diagnostic and treatment method in case of small bowel diseases...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is a growing interest in minimally invasive treatment of primary obstructive megaureter (POM) in children. The absence of long-term follow-up data, however, makes it difficult to establish the indication for an endoscopic approach. The aim of our study is to determine the long-term efficacy of endourologic high-pressure balloon dilation of the vesicoureteral junction (VUJ) in children with POM that necessitates surgical treatment. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records from children with POM who were treated with endourologic high-pressure balloon dilation of the VUJ from March 2003 to April 2010...

INTRODUCTION: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a familial polyposis syndrome characterized by multiple hamartomatous polyps throughout the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of our study was to retrospectively determine the diagnostic value of MR enterography (MRE), performed in supine and prone position, in the detection of small bowel polyps in PJ patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed MRE examinations of 8 PJS patients who underwent MRE, pushed-double-ballon enteroscopy, laparoscopic endoscopy or surgery, within 3 months...

Diagnosis of and therapy for small bowl disease is a new challenge for modern endoscopy. Following the development of capsule endoscopy it is possible to inspect the whole small intestine. Therefore one needs adequate endoscopes in order to take tissue samples and perform the corresponding therapeutic measures. Today, the technical procedure of double-ballon enteroscopy is established and is available for routine clinical use. Double-ballon enteroscopy is usable both perorally and peranally, and can be used to inspect the entire small intestine...
