Enteroscopy has become an indispensable technique for the exploration and, in particular, the treatment of small intestine lesions. It is usually performed following video capsule endoscopy of the small intestine. Three equivalent techniques exist: double balloon enteroscopy, single balloon enteroscopy and spiral enteroscopy. Since its introduction in 2001 capsule endoscopy opened up the small bowel for diagnostic approaches followed by double balloon enteroscopy which enabled the endoscopic community to perform therapeutic interventions in the whole small intestine. In this review the scientific developments related to indications, diagnostic yield and complications of the last years between the competing devices double ballon enteroscopy, single balloon enteroscopy and spiral enteroscopy are illustrated.

It was done 192 double-ballon enteroscopies in 141 patients at the period from March 2009 to March 2012. Epithelial benign tumors were detected in 10 (7.1%) patients with congenital polypoid syndromes. Endoscopic excision of polyps was done in 6 patients including 1 case with laparoscopic-assisted technique. Urgent open surgeries were performed before this in 4 patients with Peutz-Jeghers' syndrome and invaginated small bowel obstruction.
