Nanoparticle syntheses are designed to produce the desired product in high yield but traditionally neglect atom-economy. Here we report that the simple, but significant, change of the solvent from 1-octadecene (1-ODE) to the operationally inert octadecane (ODA) permits an atom-economical synthesis of copper selenophosphate (Cu3 PSe4 ) nanoparticles. This change eliminates the competing selenium (Se) delivery pathways from our first report that required an excess of Se. Instead Se0 powder is dispersed in ODA, which promotes a formal eight-electron transfer between Cu3- x P and Se0 ...

As an alternative to antibiotics, Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) possess unique properties including cationic, amphipathic and their abundance in nature, but the exact characteristics of AMPs against bacterial membranes are still undetermined. To estimate the structural stability and functional activity of AMPs, the Pseudin AMPs (Pse-1, Pse-2, Pse-3, and Pse-4) from Hylid frog species, Pseudis paradoxa, an abundantly discovered source for AMPs were examined. We studied the intra-peptide interactions and thermal denaturation stability of peptides, as well as the geometrical parameters and secondary structure profiles of their conformational trajectories...

To evaluate the feasibility and potential value of 2D Parametric Parenchymal Blood Flow (2D-PPBF) for the assessment of perfusion changes following partial spleen embolization (PSE) in a retrospective observational study design.Overall, 12 PSE procedures in 12 patients were included in this study. The outcome of the study was the platelet response (PR), calculated as the percentage increase of platelet count (PLT), following PSE. To quantify perfusion changes using 2D-PPBF, the acquired digital subtraction angiography series were post-processed...

In this study, 4-[5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-aryl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]benzenesulfonamide derivatives (8-14) were synthesized for the first time by microwave irradiation and their chemical structures were confirmed by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and HRMS. Cytotoxic activities and inhibitory effects on carbonic anhydrase I and II isoenzymes of the compounds were investigated. The compounds 9 (PSE = 4.2), 12 (PSE = 4.1) and 13 (PSE = 3.9) with the highest potency selectivity expression (PSE) values in cytotoxicity experiments and the compounds 13 (Ki = 3...

The widespread use of β-lactam antibiotics has given rise to a dramatic increase in clinically-relevant β-lactamases. Understanding the structure/function relation in these variants is essential to better address the ever-growing incidence of antibiotic resistance. We previously reported the backbone resonance assignments of a chimeric protein constituted of segments of the class A β-lactamases TEM-1 and PSE-4 (Morin et al. in Biomol NMR Assign 4:127-130, 2010. doi: 10.1007/s12104-010-9227-8 ). That chimera, cTEM17m, held 17 amino acid substitutions relative to TEM-1 β-lactamase, resulting in a well-folded and fully functional protein with increased dynamics...

A procedure to regenerate cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) cultivars from Cameroon via somatic embryogenesis (SE) was developed. Shoot apical meristems and immature leaf lobes were used as explants on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium containing 33 or 50 µM of the auxins Picloram (Pic), 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), Dicamba (Dic), and α-Naphthalene acetic acid. Cultivar performance was assessed using SE and number of somatic embryos produced. Overall, the frequency of primary somatic embryogenesis (PSE) and the mean number of somatic embryos produced varied considerably with genotype, type of auxin and concentration tested...

The brain combines information across sensory modalities to construct finely calibrated multisensory models of the body. The parameters of these models are largely dependent upon online sensory feedback, particularly visual. For example, visually magnifying a body part recalibrates somatosensory perception on it. Tool use has also been shown to recalibrate tactile perception on the tool-using limb. Here, we show that vision during tool use is both necessary and sufficient for recalibrating tactile perception...

Vection is an illusory perception of self-motion that can occur when visual motion fills the majority of the visual field. This study examines the effect of the duration of visual field movement (VFM) on the perceived strength of self-motion using an inertial nulling (IN) and a magnitude estimation technique based on the certainty that motion occurred (certainty estimation, CE). These techniques were then used to investigate the association between migraine diagnosis and the strength of perceived vection. Visual star-field stimuli consistent with either looming or receding motion were presented for 1, 4, 8 or 16s...

Chalcones and Mannich bases are a group of compounds known for their cytotoxicities. In this study restricted chalcone analogue, compound 2-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)-2,3-dihydroinden-1-one MT1, was used as a starting compound to synthesize new mono Mannich bases since Mannich bases may induce more cytotoxicity than chalcone analogue that they are derived from by producing additional alkylating center for cellular thiols. In this study, cyclic and acyclic amines were used to synthesize Mannich bases. All compounds were tested against Ca9-22 (gingival carcinoma), HSC-2, HSC-3 and HSC-4 (oral squamous cell carcinoma) as tumour cell lines and HGF (gingival fibroblasts), HPC (pulp cells) and HPLF (periodontal ligament fibroblasts) human normal oral cells as non tumour cell lines...

BACKGROUND: Elevated concentrations of LDL cholesterol are associated with the development of atherosclerosis and therefore are considered an important target for intervention to prevent cardiovascular diseases. The inhibition of cholesterol absorption in the small intestine is an attractive approach to lowering plasma cholesterol, one that is addressed by drug therapy as well as dietary supplementation with plant sterols and plant sterol esters (PSEs). OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the cholesterol-lowering effects of PSE require hydrolysis to free sterols (FSs)...

There is no consensus guidelines for treating duodenal variceal bleeding, which is a rare and life-threatening complication of portal hypertension. The impact of depression interventions is often attenuated in women who have experienced trauma. We explored whether psychological avoidance could explain this phenomenon. We synthesized two pilot randomized trials of problem-solving education (PSE) among a total of 93 urban mothers. Outcomes included depressive symptoms and perceived stress. Mothers with avoidant coping styles experienced an average 1.25 episodes of moderately severe depressive symptoms over 3 months of follow-up, compared to 0.40 episodes among those with non-avoidant coping (adjusted incident rate ratio [aIRR] 2...
