BACKGROUND: In colorectal cancer patients, loop ileostomies are used to protect an anastomosis, in salvage surgery after a complication, and as a palliative measure. The aim of this study was to identify complications to the ileostomy, time until reversal, and risk factors for nonclosure or a permanent stoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Consecutive patients who received a loop ileostomy with the diagnosis of colorectal cancer at index surgery in four hospitals in Region Västra Götaland, Sweden, from January 1, 2007 until February 28, 2010 were retrospectively studied...

This study investigated how readily achievable changes to the quantity and processing of starchy foods in a typical Western diet: (1) were reflected in levels of resistant starch (RS) and NSP excreted from the small intestine; and (2) more favourable profiles of butyrate, NH3 and phenol production. Two diets, a low-starch diet (LSD) and a high-starch, low-fat diet (HSLFD) were compared. The LSD with 20% total energy (%E) from starch was based on a 'typical' Australian diet, while the HSLFD (40%E as starch) was the same Australian diet modified by an increased content of legumes, starchy foods and coarsely-ground cereals and by a reduced fat content...

On the basis of 10 cases (8 cases of rectosigmoid cancer and 2 of sigmoid volvulus), the authors report about their experience in the restoration of GI tract continuity using colorectal intubation into the rectal lumen and a transproctoanal anastomosis. This technique helps avoiding subperitoneal sutures, which are a cause of fistulae and shrinkage. It is simple enough to be performed by younger surgeons. This technique was initially developed for anterior resections for rectosigmoid cancer, and it can be utilized as an emergency procedure with single-piece resection without untwisting the sphacelous sigmoid loops, so that neither a temporary left iliostomy nor a second operation are needed...

The article analyses two matched groups of patients with generalized purulent peritonitis of 72-hour duration in the stage of polyorganic insufficiency. There were 100 patients. Application of organ-resuscitation measures in the abdominosplanchnic zone is the key moment of the surgical treatment of patients with generalized purulent peritonitis. In view of this, peritoneoenteric lavage with oxygenated energy mass of 5-10% glucose solution is indicated together with intensive infusion-transfusion, antibacterial therapy, and extracorporeal detoxification for such patients...
