We present the design and optimization of the optical single side-band (SSB) Nyquist four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) transmission using dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM)modulation and direct detection (DD), aiming at the C-band cost-effective, high-speed and long-distance transmission. At the transmitter, the laser line width should be small to avoid the phase noise to amplitude noise conversion and equalization-enhanced phase noise due to the large chromatic dispersion (CD). The optical SSB signal is generated after optimizing the optical modulation index (OMI) and hence the minimum phase condition which is required by the Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver can also be satisfied...

We experimentally demonstrate 2 × 64 Gb/s PAM-4 transmission over a 70 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) using two O-band 18G-class directly modulated lasers (DMLs). Only one praseodymium-doped fiber amplifier (PDFA) at the receiver side is used to compensate the transmission loss. Meanwhile, transmission impairments are compensated by a sparse Volterra filter (SVF) equalizer, which can achieve similar system performance but with half the computational complexity (CC), in comparison with a traditional VF equalizer...

We experimentally demonstrate the possibility of transmitting 112  Gb/s PAM-4 signals over 30-km standard single-mode fibers with commercial 20-GHz components. The impact on system performance of three different equalization schemes-feed-forward equalizer (FFE), Volterra filter (VF), and maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE)-is investigated and compared. We prove that the |x| and x|x| components of the VF can efficiently reduce the chirp-induced signal skew distortion, and that an MLSE with only four states can be used to remove the error floor...

Infants are well known to seek eye contact, and they prefer to fixate on developmentally meaningful objects, such as the human face. It is also known, that visual abilities are important for the developmental cascades of cognition from later infancy to childhood. It is less understood, however, whether newborn visual abilities relate to later cognitive development, and whether newborn ability for visual fixation can be assigned to early microstructural maturation. Here, we investigate relationship between newborn visual fixation (VF) and gaze behavior (GB) to performance in visuomotor and visual reasoning tasks in two cohorts with cognitive follow-up at 2 (n = 57) and 5 (n = 1410) years of age...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to assess by means of shear bond strength tests (SBS), microleakage analysis (μLKG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the bonding potential and sealing ability of a new self-adhering composite resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SBS and μLKG of Vertise Flow (VF, Kerr) were measured and compared to the all-in-one adhesive systems G-Bond (GB, GC), AdheSE One (AO, Ivoclar Vivadent), Adper Easy Bond (EB, 3M ESPE), Xeno V (XV, Dentsply), and iBOND (iB, Heraeus Kulzer)...

A 47-year-old man was found at his home in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest. His family performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him. He was brought to our hospital by ambulance. On arrival, his pupils were dilated and his heart was in a state of ventricular fibrillation. After returning to spontaneous circulation by the cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the electrocardiogram revealed ST elevation at V2-V5. Cardiac catheterizatin revealed a left anterior descending coronary obstruction. Percutaneous coronary angioplasty was performed...

Multiple lines of evidence indicate that in the transplant population human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection and its associated diseases are controlled by humoral and cellular immune responses similar to those that arise in asymptomatic, healthy individuals during a naturally-acquired infection. The dominant antibody response to HCMV is to the major surface glycoprotein B (gB) and the dominant cellular immune response is to the tegument phosphoprotein (pp65). We propose that an immunotherapeutic plasmid DNA (pDNA) vaccination approach that induces the requisite responses to major immunological targets of HCMV may provide relief from HCMV-associated diseases in the transplant setting...

Hunger strike is described as voluntary refusal of food and/or fluids. Prolonged starvation may produce many adverse events including even death in rare circumstances. Here, we present three fatal cases (all males, 25-38 years) died from hunger strike. In all corpses, obvious muscle wasting with reduced subcutaneous and internal fat deposits, and atrophy in some organs were demonstrated at autopsy. The extraordinary long starvation period before death could presumably be linked to the thiamine uptake in this period, which had been discontinued by all subjects before the death occurred...

Resveratrol and trans-resveratrol are powerful phytoestrogens, present in the skins of grapes and other plant foods and wine, which demonstrate a broad spectrum of pharmacological and therapeutic health benefits. Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring plant-derived nonsteroidal compounds that are functionally and structurally similar to steroidal estrogens, such as estradiol, produced by the body. Various studies, reviewed herein, have demonstrated the health benefits of phytoestrogens in addressing climacteric syndrome including vasomotor symptoms and postmenopausal health risks, as well as their anticarcinogenic, neuroprotective and cardioprotective activities and prostate health and bone formation promoting properties...

Acute pancreatitis and/or gallbladder disease precipitating angina pectoris, or producing arrhythmias or ST-T wave changes on electrocardiography in the absence of coronary artery disease, have frequently been mentioned. Many attempts have been made to explain the etiology of these findings. To the authors' knowledge, this report is the most dramatic expression of pathogenetic mechanisms which are still considered hypothetical.

Ventricular fibrillation was induced in nine dogs weighing 18 to 22 kg. CPR was performed with a mechanical chest compressor. Mean carotid flow during CPR was 7.9 +/- 1.5 ml/min. After MAST inflation to 100 mm Hg, the flow increased to 15.7 +/- 3.7 ml/min. Intrathoracic aortic systolic pressure was also significantly increased from 65 +/- 7 to 73 +/- 8 mm Hg. When the thorax was vented with chest tubes bilaterally, no change in carotid flow or arterial pressure was noted on closing or opening the chest tubes...

Concentrations of AMSA were determined by HPLC in autopsy tissue samples from five patients who had received the drug antemortem. Relative organ concentrations of AMSA varied from patient to patient; however, concentrations were generally highest in gallbladder, liver, and kidney, while low levels were generally but not invariably found in lung, testicle, muscle, fat, spleen, bladder, pancreas, colon, prostate, and brain. One patient with ventricular fibrillation and seizures had high tissue AMSA concentrations in myocardium, but low concentrations in brain...
