OBJECTIVE: To compare the hemodynamic responses to orotracheal intubation using a Shikani Optical Stylet (SOS) laryngoscope or a Macintosh direct laryngoscope (MDLS). METHODS: Totally 41 patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists ASA physical status -aged 20-60 years and scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia requiring orotracheal intubation, were randomly allocated to either the SOS group (n=21) or MDLS group (n=20). After an intravenous anesthetic induction the orotracheal intubation was performed using a SOS laryngoscope or a MDLS...

COMPARATIVE STUDY

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effects of Cookgas intubating laryngeal airway (CILA) in facilitating fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB) and Shikani optical stylet (SOS)-guided intubations in anticipating difficult tracheal intubation. METHODS: Totally 60 anticipated difficult tracheal intubation patients undergoing selective plastic surgery under general anesthesia were allocated to FOB group (n = 30) and SOS group (n = 30). After anesthesia induction and CILA insertion, the patients were treated with FOB or SOS-guided intubation via CILA...

The craniofacial abnormalities of popliteal pterygium syndrome present unique challenges to the pediatric anesthetist. Congenital fibrous bands between the maxilla and mandible limit mouth opening and the tongue may be fused to the palate. We describe the use of the Shikani Optical Stylet, a novel fiberoptic endoscope, in the airway management of a neonate with popliteal pterygium syndrome and syngnathia.

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

PURPOSE: The optimal technique to manage the airway in patients presenting with a potential or documented cervical spine (C-spine) injury remains unresolved. Using fluoroscopic video assessment, C-spine motion during laryngoscopy with a Shikani Optical Stylet (SOS) was compared to C-spine motion during intubation using a Macintosh blade. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy surgical patients gave written consent to participate in a crossover randomized controlled trial; all patients were subjected to both Macintosh and Shikani laryngoscopy with manual inline stabilization following induction of anesthesia...

The airways of children with many craniofacial and mandibulofacial malformations often present unique challenges to the anesthesiologists. We report the application of Shikani Optical Stylet (SOS) in facilitating the tracheal intubation of four children with history of difficult airway management. The SOS combines the benefits of the lightwand and fiberoptic bronchoscope.
